Chapter 37: Chapter 37
Chapter37 Kate and jail
The court hearing was between Kate and the State’s attorney. Kate’s lawyer being ken was very much on time to meet with Kate at the police station to brief her about what to answer at the court.
“You haven’t lied to me about the whole thing. You told me you shot the police, and that is the truth, you did. But I don’t want you to tell the court you did without reasons. The court will want to play on your gullibility, they would want to see you disgrace and expose yourself by yourself but you are going to play by my rules and not theirs. If you play by my rules, I assure you, you are going to walk through the door of freedom but if you don’t, you will have to secure a permanent corner in jail. But I don’t want that to be your fate,” ken had said to Kate
“So what is the rule?” Kate had asked, looking puzzled and anxious like a dog after its bones.
“You will plead not guilty. Use the term not guilty. Read my lips. You will tell them you are not guilty because the complainant abused you verbally and you have history of verbal madness.”
“What is verbal madness?” Kate had asked, looking into his face and expecting answers.
“Verbal madness is simply the harsh sometimes violent reactions that occur when someone is verbally abused. You are going to give that answer because I have the medical backing with me, a copy I have also submitted to the court.” He had held her hands. “Sweet beef, if you give them that answer I assure you we are going to drink a toast to your freedom tonight at home.”
“I promise not to derail from what you just told me,” she had replied and grinned sadly.

At the court seated at the first pew were Mr. and Mrs. Coleman, and next to them was Mrs. Fanny and the rest of onlookers sat behind them.
“I am scared she might go to jail,” whispered Mrs. Fanny to Mrs. Coleman.
Mrs. Coleman glared at her across her shoulder, “Satan hope you don’t mind going behind me. How could you assume such a thing when I know that we gave you the best lawyer that has ever happened to California? That dude you see standing over there is not just Ken, he actually canes his rival lawyers in court. You know of the murder case I told you about, how his client murdered a boy that fell in love with his girlfriend. It was a murder case point and black but when the parents asked for the service of Ken and after he had groomed them on what to do; my dear the door to freedom was just wide for their son. They won the case and today the 007 shooter is married to his heartthrob.”
“ I am just nervous. She is the only child I have, and in less than twenty four hours my husband will also be arraigned. I am gradually losing everything.”
“Heh hope you’re not going to break down in tears. You better comport yourself and make your heart clean for the release of Kate,” Mrs. Coleman said and tapped on her laps to alert the hearing was about to start.
The judge invited Kate to the podium and made her swear an oath of honesty and sincerity to the honorable court before the questioning from the States’ attorney, who happened to be a short middle aged Spanish albino that rarely smiled.
“What is your name?” she asked Kate.
“I am Kate Fanny,” replied Kate.
“Kate Fanny can you tell this honorable court the gun you used to shoot the complainant?” he asked.
“What gun?” asked Kate, looking a little nervous.
“I said tell us the type of gun you used in the shooting.”
“I don’t know the type of gun. I am not a gun manufacturer neither am I a professional shooter.”
“But you have proven to be one. No ordinary amateurish shooter will shoot a police officer on the leg twice at the same spot without missing. How long have you been shooting your haters and how many have you fallen,”
Ken stood up, “Objection my lord. He is asking a question that is out of the contest of the case.”
“Objetion sustained,” the judge said , “Johnson you have to narrow your question to the case at hand. We are not here to learn how she has been falling haters, and the brand of guns.”
“Ok my lord. Now Kate did you shoot the police officer yes or no?”
“I only realized later I had shot a police officer.”
“What do you mean by later?” he asked shooting his hostile stare at her.
Kate glared at ken and ken winked at her to go on and say what he had taught her. “I have medical history of verbal madness?” she said, a bit scared and anxious this time but tried to push on.
“What do you mean by verbal madness?”asked Johnson.
“Verbal madness is the harsh and often violent reaction one displays when he or she is verbally abused.”
“How does that concern a police officer on duty?” he asked. “Did your verbal madness pull the gun from the police and shoot him?”
“Yes,” she replied. “I was verbally abused by your client. I only realized I had shot someone just minutes later.”
“False, my lord this is staged. It doesn’t hold water.”
“Objection my lord,” said Ken standing up.
“Objection overruled, “Mr. Ken you have to calm down and allow Johnson to dice the cake.” The judge said and looked at Johnson, “She didn’t stage anything. She saying the fact and I have her evidence with me.”
“My lord is there any medical condition called verbal madness?” he asked, confusedly.
“Are you asking me that? Am I the plaintiff? Instead of disgrace your ignorance why not yourself ask later. There are millions of medical conditions and millions more in the pipe of discovery.”
“Thank you my lord,” said Johnson. “I have no further question,” he said and stared at Kate and Ken suspiciously.
“Ok in the absence of further question, this honorable court will go on a thirty minutes recess and upon return judgment will be pronounced,” he said and ducked it on his desk…
