Chapter 61: Chapter 61

Freddie had been complaining of a headache for some times now. He had told Freya not to say a word of it to her brother. He had been managing it before she came to find him when she wandered from Emma's place.

And like a good wife that Freya had now become, she said okay and helped her husband to secretly take his medicine. Freddie just got a job as a gardener and was excited to resume that morning before he slumped.

Freya was sobbing. What is happening to her husband? He wasn't responding when she found him except for an occasional loud sighing he made. Will he be alright?

She stood outside the emergency ward where Freddie was admitted and waited for what the doctor would say. Greg glanced at his sister and saw her agitation.

Thank goodness she went in when she did. Otherwise, they might not have met Freddie alive anymore. The couple had put up with him and he was glad they had mended their relationship and are now together.

And his sister Freya had changed drastically. She is no more that nagging and unsatisfied woman and wife who complains about everything and everyone.

He was more excited when he helped Freddie get a job as a gardener in his boss's family house. Since Leah and Ellis were not home, he was the caretaker of the house.

He was allowed to employ a gardener. And since he had such a privilege, who was he going to hire if not his dear brother-in-law who said he wants a job?

But alas while he was in the sitting room, waiting for Freddie to join him so that he could present him to President Hayden, he was staying too long and Freya decided to go and check on him.

Freya hadn't gone for more than three minutes when he heard her scream, calling him to come over and save Freddie. He rushed in quickly and the rest was how they ended up in the hospital.

The doctor eventually walked out of the ward with his stethoscope hung around his neck. Greg and Freya went to him quickly and asked how Freddie is doing?

"To my office, please" the doctor declared and the two adults nodded, walking behind the doctor and to his office.

They took their seats and the doctor started like this "for how long have you been trying to manage his illness before he ended up slumping?"

Greg squinted. Manage his illness? Freddie has not been ill all these while. He had always been fine and there was nothing there to manage with his health.

"He hasn't been sick at all, '' Greg replied, demonstrating it with a nod. He was certain that his brother-in-law was fine before everything took a different turn that morning.

"What, are you sure of your claim?" The doctor asked, not agreeing with what Greg said. He's been a surgeon for many years before he became a senior surgeon. He knows what he was saying.

"Yes, I am.." Greg was going to reaffirm his claim when Freya said "No brother, Freddie has not been feeling well for some time now" she interrupted him as her tears gave way.

Greg turned and glanced at her speechless. Freddie had been sick and the both of them hid it away from him? Was he ever mean to them that they hide something so important from him?

Freya nodded and turned to face the doctor "yes, my husband has been sick but it was mild. He suffers from a severe headache and complains of chest pain" she explained.

"You both hid it from me and didn't speak up?" Greg was alarmed. Headache, chest pain? If the first didn't scare them, what about the chest pain, aren't they afraid it might be complicated if no immediate action was taken to find out what caused it.

"And you said it's mild?" The doctor asked, not paying attention to Greg's words. He was interested in Freya's words, that's why he would begin from?

"You think it was mild? He was having a high blood pressure and eventually when it was left untreated and unattended to, it resulted in stroke.

I won't agree with your words, because his present condition doesn't appear mild to me. If you hadn't brought him in when you did, in less than five minutes, he would have died.

Now, he has a brain concussion as a result of the fall and needs to be operated upon. We are managing him now by placing him on a drip. The surgery should be done as soon as possible.

That is the first thing we need to do now and after that, we will commence treatment and management of his health until he's able to recover significantly…"the doctor explained.

Freya glanced at Greg and then the doctor. She didn't hear a major part of what the doctor said. The only thing she heard was that her husband had brain confusion...concoction no, no concon..she didn't get the word correctly.

"Sorry doctor, did you say brain confusion or concoction?" Freya asked, looking alarmed.

"No, I said brain concussion. It's an injury caused by the fall. He had hit his head against a hard surface and there is a blood clot in the brain.."the doctor explained.

"How much are we talking about?" Greg asked. Freya is already acting like a confused woman. He shouldn't be acting like her. He was still having his sanity and Sense if reasoning intact.

"The receptionist will tell you all that you need for his treatment and before we commence on anything, you will make a deposit of 50% of the total amount required" the doctor explained.

Greg said okay but Freya was already up and going outside. Greg quickly stood up and went after her. When they got outside, Freya was already heading back to the ward where Freddie was admitted.

"Where are you going, Freya?" Greg asked. His sister was taking a different path rather than going to the receptionist table. The earlier they know what the cost implications would be, the faster for them to get done with it.

"I am going to check on the brain con...con.. fusion..no con..cu..ssion on Freddie" Freya replied, looking Serious and ready to walk past Greg and see for herself.

Greg pulled her back and glared at her "Are you alright sister. If you see it, what can you do about it? Shouldn't you come along with me to see the receptionist and know how much for the surgery and the treatment?

"Are we going to pay any money?" Freya asked and Greg was speechless. Looks like his problem wasn't going to be Freddie alone but Freya as well.

"You think this is a charity home?" Greg asked, perplexed by Freya's weird attitude. He held her hand and walked towards the receptionist desk.

They introduced themselves and gave their patient's name. She checked through the system and printed out the treatment procedure and the cost of it.

Greg blinked his eyes several times to be sure he saw exactly what was written. It wasn't much though to some, but they were middle class and won't be able to afford it.

"A hundred and fifty thousand dollars?" Freya screamed. She didn't know when her tears started running down her cheeks. Where on earth will they get such an amount?

Greg was quiet for some time. How can he raise such an amount of money? He hadn't got beyond twenty thousand dollars as his savings. That's all he's got.

How can they get a deposit of 50% of the money so that the surgery can begin with Freddie? His life was in danger and they didn't need to waste so much time.

”How can we raise such an amount Greg? You know Freddie and I have no savings and we have nothing. What can we do now to save Freddie's life?" Freya asked.

"I don't know. All I have is twenty thousand dollars as my entire savings. We need at least seventy thousand dollars as a deposit. Can you contact Emma, tell her about her father's health condition" Greg suggested.

Freya said alright. She called Emma twice and the phone was not answered. It was the third time calling her cell phone number that Emma eventually answered her phone.

"Why do you call me mother? I don't want unnecessary interference with my life" Emma grumbled into the phone. She knew it, her mother had thought she would come and find her when she left.

If she didn't go after her father when he left, why should she care about her mother. She could go anywhere or even visit the moon for all she cares.

"I do not find it interesting to call you either Emma. But because your father is in a critical state and we need some money to eat treatment to commence…"Freya was still explaining when Emma interrupted her.

"I knew it all narrowed down to money. Begging me money and using such a cheap reason will not get you anything mum.

Send my regards to my dad and tell him I wish him a quick recovery. I don't have money, not even a single dollar to give you" Emma replied flippantly.

They thought she was a money bag that they could call at any time and request money from her. She's not some super rich woman that has money piled up in her room, neither is she a philanthropist.

"You think I am trying to get money from you falsely? You think I will use Freddie that way to get money from you? Your father is in a coma and needs you" Freya tried explaining to her.

"Whatever, I don't care about that. I don't have money to offer mum. Dad will be fine, okay?" Emma declared and hung up.

"Hello...are you there? Emma" Freya said, but she heard the sound of the call being hung. She gently brought the phone away from her ears.

"What did Emma say, is she coming?" Greg asked, staring at his sister's puzzled face.
