Chapter 50: Chapter 50
The Johnson's replied to him warmly. But his parents were not pleased that he didn't say hello to Pamela. No matter what has happened, they can put that behind them and save Dora's life first.
"What happened to my daughter, Pamela?" Louis asked and glared at the latter with an expressionless face.
"She's in the intensive care unit. She's been diagnosed with Leukaemia and needs an urgent transfusion to keep her alive before proceeding to the next stage of treatment…"Ellis quickly chipped in.
"I'm sorry dad, but I want Pamela to tell me exactly what happened to my daughter. We both are the child's parents, right?" he asked, but his eyes didn't blink once from staring at Pamela.
Everyone was quiet. Louis was right. They are the child's parents and should decide what and how they want to save their daughter.
Pamela sighed. She looked up at Louis, who stood a few distance and towered over her. "Dora my daughter is dying and we need your blood to save her"
"She's not only your daughter, but Louis' daughter as well. You should choose your words correctly" Clarion chipped in.
"You want me to save our daughter now because she's dying. You kept her away from me all these years and when I came to you to meet them; you told me they are exclusively yours, right?" Louis thundered.
"You caused it, Louis. You rejected them back then and forced me to have an abortion. And return to ask about the same kids who you wanted me to flush away a few years ago.
Do you even have a conscience? You are so miserable and think you can cover up your irresponsible attitude by sweet tonguing me with the words I am sorry? Do you expect me to listen to you?" Pamela lost her temper.
There was an absolute quietness in the ward. No one said anything except that Louis and Pamela glared at each other, none blinking an eyelid.
"You think I am irresponsible and as such you didn't listen to me when I came back to apologise to you, right. I was wrong back then, and I admitted my wrong. But that you refused to forgive me and hid my kids from me is not justifiable at all.
But tell me, if you have a conscience yourself. After you refused to forgive the past, you tried to ruin me, you made me go bankrupt overnight, destroying my entire hard work without realizing that you are mean and terrible.
Isn't that enough to pay for my sins? You didn't forgive but took revenge on me. Do you have any right to still talk about someone else's wrongs when yours was the worst?
I didn't fight you back because I knew I paid for my wrongs in double or perhaps triple fold. Now that we both are on the same page, we can talk without feeling the other has wronged us, right?" Louis Hayden asked, this time his eyes were reddened in fury.
Pamela looked away. She didn't find any word to retort back at him. She wants Dora to be saved and that's all. She was wrong and Louis was right. They are on the same page now.
"Dora has less than an hour to be saved. Louis please, can we talk about this later?" Ellis demanded.
"No dad. If a woman kept your kids away from you for years and then suddenly asked you to come and save the child, would you readily jump at it or question her orientation?" Louis asked.
"She's in the last stage of Leukaemia. She has your blood type and you need to save her before she commences the other treatment. And now, time is running out and the doctors said her life is in danger.
Please baby, save her. She's your daughter. At this point, forget about Pamela and concentrate on saving your daughter. You know how I now feel about Pamela but for my granddaughter's sake, let's save her, Louis." Leah pleaded, holding Louis' hand.
"Take me to the doctors" he demanded, glaring at Pamela. The latter nodded and led the way. Louis followed and the parents felt a little relieved.
The doctor was surprised when he saw Louis Hayden. "Hello Mr Hayden. Good to see you. Please take a seat" Dr Nathan offered.
Louis sat down and Pamela sat next to him. "Thank you doctor," he said.
"Louis Hayden is Dora's biological father. His blood might be the same type as his daughter's. Can you examine him?" Pamela explained.
Dr Nathan was surprised. Dora was Louis Hayden's daughter. He glanced at the latter and he nodded "Yes, Dora is my daughter"
Half an hour later, Louis was being bled in the haematology section of the hospital. His blood was immediately transfused into his daughter.
Pamela stood by him all along. She didn't leave his side. Though Louis didn't say anything to her, she knew he had no problem with her being by his side all the way.
Louis was told to wait and relax for an hour before standing up, but he insisted that he was going to see his daughter. He forced himself up but he staggered. Pamela came to hold him and he pulled her hand off.
He gently walked back to the ward where his daughter was being transfused. His hand still bandaged. He got in and Pamela pulled a seat for him to sit down.
He drew his chair closer to Dora and took her hand gently. She looked pale and malnourished. "Why weren't you paying attention to her when the symptoms just came up?" Louis asked.
"I did. But none knew she was having a Cancer. The symptoms weren't detected on time until today when the doctor announced that her health was in an acute state of leukaemia" Pamela explained.
"What about the others, are they fine?" Louis asked again and Pamela said yes. She would bring them to meet him by morning of the next day.
Louis asked his parents to go home for the night. He would wait and stay with his daughter at the hospital. He asked Pamela's grandparents to leave as well.
They told him that the servants can do that but he insisted that he would stay with his daughter. Eventually, others left, it was himself and Pamela that stayed behind.
At midnight when the transfusion was almost over, he asked her to go and rest in the visitors lounge. Pamela was reluctant.
"You will break down healthwise if you don't rest" Louis declared and stopped talking to her. Pamela went into the inner room and laid on the bed.
She didn't sleep. She wants him to be the one sleeping instead after donating his blood. But since he refused, she would only lay down but refused to sleep.
Soon Louis came over and covered her with a quilt and returned to sit by Dora's bedside. Pamela opened her eyes a little and saw him sat down with his back to her.
Louis came to cover her with a quilt? He really can do that for her? When she saw him approaching, she closed her eyes and pretended to be sleeping. When he saw her sleeping, he then covered her.
Before dawn, Dora opened her eyes and the first person she saw was Louis Hayden.
