Chapter 49: Chapter 49

Chapter 49 Edward is in danger!

As Bella walked up to the president's office door, her heartbeat sped up as she remembered the feeling of physical contact she just had with him. That feeling was very similar to the feeling she had when she held hands with Edward.

She stopped in her tracks and clenched her fists, taking a deep breath to try to drive the strange feeling out of her head. After a few attempts, she walked into the office with her head held high.

She sat down at her computer and reviewed the reports of yesterday's meeting. Her eyes, however, kept stealing glances at the president.

She had never watched him as carefully as she did then. She was surprised to find that the president and Edward were surprisingly very similar in their body shapes. Their shoulders were also broad and the only difference was the color of their hair. The president had blonde hair whereas Edward had soft brown hair.

It seemed that the similarity between both men gave Bella a strange feeling when she touched the president's hand. She withdrew her gaze and focused her attention on her work. After a quick check of the reports, she sent them by email to the entire company.

Half a minute later, the president came over to her and ordered, "Please check the reports you sent again."

Bella opened the reports, checked them again and looked up,"I've checked them several times and found nothing wrong."

The president pointed his finger at the column of participants, "Look, there is a name error here."

When Bella saw this, she was so ashamed that her face instantly turned red and she stammered in defense, "I'm... I'm so sorry. I was too busy and... A little tired this morning. That's why I made such a low-level mistake."

Having said that, she regretted it deeply. It was childish to make excuses for mistakes at work.

The president looked at her for a minute and spoke calmly, "Your workload is indeed a bit too much. How about this? I will recruit another junior secretary to assist you in your work."

Hearing this, Bella was shocked, to say the least. The president's words were meant to dismiss her. She sighed wearily.

'So the matter has come to this!' She thought wistfully and couldn't say anything. She just nodded in agreement and swallowed the bitterness down her throat.

She sat motionless in her chair, thinking about what she and Edward should do if she lost the job. Soon it was noon and suddenly, she heard the president's voice. "Bella, let's go to the restaurant for lunch."

When the president called her again after her lack of response, she was still lost in her worries and didn't come back to her senses until he knocked on her table to grab her attention. She blinked, realizing that he was inviting her to lunch.

"Okay," she hastily agreed, thinking that since she was going to be dismissed, she might as well take this opportunity to eat a big meal.

The president took her to the staff restaurant located on the tenth floor of the building. She saw David there with the woman she had met earlier in the parking lot, sitting a few seats away from her, talking and laughing together. She shifted her gaze to not look at them; she didn't want to spoil her appetite.

Flipping through the menu, she was still unsure of what to order.

"I recommend the roasted chicken. It tastes the best." The president helped her, placing his menu card down.

"Oh, okay!" Bella nodded with a smile.

The waiter quickly brought two portions of roasted chicken and Bella tentatively tasted the chicken. She couldn't help finding it delicious. It tasted great and she remembered that Edward also liked roasted chicken.

'If only it was Edward was sitting here with me and eating roasted chicken.' She thought to herself gloomily.

The president's cell phone rang and he walked away to take a call, excusing himself. Bella waited for him but when he came back, he gave her an apologetic look, "Excuse me, I have to go first."

She looked at his portion of roasted chicken which he hadn't eaten a single bite of and was looking distressed so she asked him, "President, what about your portion of roasted chicken? If you don't want it, can I pack it up and take it with me? I want to be able to eat it when I'm hungry."

The president nodded to grant permission and then walked out of the restaurant. Bella asked the waiter to bring her a lunch box to pack the roasted chicken. Suddenly, she saw David walking toward her. She took the roasted chicken and made a beeline for the door but before she could get out of the restaurant, she was caught by David.

"Let go of me." She whispered, not wanting to draw attention to herself.

"You bitch, guess what I just saw?" David hissed and said, "The last time I was at your parents' house, you accused me of having an affair. Are you a faithful woman? I saw with my own eyes that you were having lunch with the president. You betrayed Edward."

"Don't be ridiculous! He and I just had lunch together. If you want to accuse me of cheating because of that, go ahead!"

Being accused by David in the restaurant for no reason like this, she was so angry that her lungs were about to explode. She fiercely shook David off and walked out of the restaurant quickly.

The headache persisted until the end of the day. Bella picked up her things and left the office. She walked to the parking lot and sat in her car in a trance.

'I'll never be able to use this car again after I get fired.' She sighed inwardly, turning on the engine with a heavy heart and driving away from the company.

The roads were in terrible condition on the way back home. There was a long traffic jam. It was dark and Bella hadn't arrived home yet.

'Today is fucking bad luck!' She cursed to herself and drove into a cobbled path.

The road was overgrown with weeds and rustling sounds came from inside. There were many large trees with twisted branches and thick foliage growing on both sides of the road. In the darkness of the night, the shadows of the tree followed her like ghosts.

She felt an inexplicable pang of panic, feeling that someone was following her. These days, several cases of home invasion and robbery were broadcast on the news and the perpetrators hadn't been arrested yet. Thinking about it, she couldn't help but feel a cold chill running down her spine.

As she neared home, she saw from a distance that the inside of the house was dark.

'Strange, isn't Edward home?' She wondered.

She parked the car in the vacant lot in front of the house and got out of the car. As she was about to enter the house, she saw a strange man walking behind her house. She was sure she hadn't seen him before.??

''Oh no! Edward is in danger!'' She muttered to herself, tensing up and returned to the car. She grabbed a lifter, adjusted her breathing and raised the weapon in her hand, rushing toward the stranger.
