Chapter 250: Chapter 250

[DEVON’s Point of View]

“Not now, Devon. I’ll tell you later. Just... stay with your sister while your Uncle Killian and I are bringing your dad straight to the infirmary.”

Diana and I observed the healers transporting Dad on a stretcher. Blood was everywhere, and I felt like all the hairs on my nape stood as I saw that gaping wound on my father’s shoulder blade.

“What happened to him!?” I screamed in the hallway, but nobody answered my question while Diana was crying beside me. Mom was in total panic and distress, and Uncle Kian couldn’t leave her side. Everyone was so focused on Dad that no one bothered explaining to us what happened to him. I didn’t know what to tell Diana! I didn’t know how to calm her down when I couldn’t pull myself together as I watched Dad’s pale face with a horrified look.

“Devon, he’s dying!” Diana sobbed so loudly that her voice echoed in the hallway.

With trembling hands, I grabbed Diana’s shoulders and forced her to look at my face. I was a few minutes older than her, which means I had to be strong for both of us. I had to be there for her and be the big brother she needed.

“Diana, listen. Dad is not dying, you hear me? He’s just injured. He will be okay!” I tried my hardest for my voice not to break in front of my sister as I watched her eyes well up with tears. “It’s just a small scratch! Dad is the strongest Alpha in this whole land! His wounds will heal and everything will be alright!”

I couldn’t even hear what I was saying. It felt like empty words to me because I wasn’t sure if Dad would be okay. I saw that terrible wound on his chest and how the blood pooled from it, and I knew at that second that Dad was poisoned with a silver arrow.

But what scared me more was the same black veins he had when he had the curse.

Could it be possible that Dad could be infected again, even after he was healed from it by the Jade Blade?

“We have to go look at what’s going on,” Diana suggested as she wiped her tears with the back of her hand, trying to look brave. “I need to know if Dad will be really okay.”

“Okay, Diana,” I pulled my sister against me as I wrapped my arm around her shoulder. “We just need to wait until we are allowed to visit Dad in the infirmary. We have to be strong for Mom and Dad. Can you do that?” I asked my sister with a smile that didn’t reach my eyes.

“Okay, Devon,” She finally decided to calm down as we both stared at the hallway where drops of Dad’s blood still trailed towards the infirmary.

“I think it’s not the time to go here, Devon. Mom is probably sleeping now in her bed.” Diana hissed at me as she worriedly followed me through the corridors of the infirmary. Her little hands were grabbing the hem of my jacket as well, and both tiptoed inside, trying not to make any sound that would grab the attention of any healers working the night shift.

“Shhh... we can’t risk anyone seeing us here, Diana. Mom hasn’t given us any permission to visit Dad yet.”

“I know. But I am just worried Mom will get upset with us sneaking around here.”

I turned around and looked at my sister’s worried face. “It doesn’t matter. What matters is that we know how Dad is doing. We tried our best to ask everyone about what happened, but no one answered us. So we will find a way to find out. We need to know how we can help Dad.”

Diana bit her lower lip and then nodded at me, agreeing that we had to do something to help our father. Just like me, she wouldn’t be able to go to sleep unless we knew what was happening to Dad.

When we opened the door just slightly enough to see what was going on inside, my heart broke when I saw so much apparatus surrounding Dad. I was so confused because even when he had the curse before, and even though it was getting worse, he didn’t look as awful as this. I wasn’t sure how to feel as I stared at Dad lying on the infirmary bed, unconscious and breathing with an oxygen mask over his mouth and nose.

“My Daddy...” Diana’s silent cry brought a heavy feeling in my chest as I pulled her close to me into a tight hug.

I wasn’t sure what to tell her. I wasn’t sure how to feel either. All I felt was this pain in my chest that I couldn’t describe. Like my heart was being squeezed so tight it was almost impossible to breathe. I held my sister tight to calm her down until I heard someone sniffing inside the room, and Diana and I looked at who was inside.

We found Mom on the other side of the room. Her head was on a table, and she must have cried herself to sleep because she was still sobbing.

“We have to help them, Devon. How are we going to help Mom and Dad?” Diana sobbed, her nose and cheeks were red, and her eyes were filled with tears as she whispered, trying her hardest not to wake up Mom with her sob. “We have to do something.”

“I know,” I said to my sister, but deep inside, I was scared and confused. What could we do to help Dad’s condition? I wasn’t even sure what was happening to him. But looking at my sister, she needed something that would reassure her that Dad would be okay.

I hope he was really okay.

“I remember Uncle Killian used to tell Mom that to cure the curse, Mom had to heal Dad with her blood. But then I remember Grandma Lena told us too that we are also the key to destroying the curse, so maybe we can help Dad without telling Mom.”

“We won’t tell Mom? But why?” Diana asked, a little puzzled and worried. “I am afraid she will get angry that we are doing something again that they don’t know, Devon. What if something happens? Like, whatever you are planning would fail? I don’t want Mom to get very upset with us.”

“Don’t worry, Diana. We will find a way to help them.” I smiled at her and then patted the top of her head. And then, out of nowhere, I remembered something.

I frowned, not sure if it would work, but I wanted to try. “Do you think Dad’s wolf will appear once we blow the whistle?” I asked Diana.

“What do you mean? He’s very sick, Devon! I mean, look at Dad!”

I took out my whistle and then looked at my sister with a grin. Diana gave me a nervous look as she realized I was serious about what I said.

I didn’t know why something was urging me to do it, and Diana started to look scared of what might happen, so she tried to take the whistle from me and glared.

“Stop it, Devon! You are not sure what will happen if you use that whistle!”

“We have to find out if this whistle can summon Dad’s wolf to make his recovery fast!” I wasn’t sure what I was thinking, but it did make sense to me.

“Don’t you dare do it—”

To my surprise, Diana tried to grab the whistle away from me. And to my panic, I stuffed the whistle in my mouth and blew on the thing.

Diana’s eyes widened.

I frowned. I was really sure I blew on the whistle, but no sound came out of it. “Do you think it’s broken?” I asked her, confused at what had happened. I blew on the whistle again and still no sound.

“I think this is broken.” I winced at Diana.

Not too far from us, I heard something that scratched on the tiled floor of the infirmary. Both Diana and I looked at each other until we smelled it and realized what was coming our way.

“What is Purple doing here?!” Diana panicked a little when Purple started to bark as soon as she saw us. I immediately scooped her up from the floor and asked her not to make any noise, but Purple was too thrilled and excited; she woke up Mom from inside Dad’s room. “What is happening here?” Mom opened the door and was surprised to see me and my twin sister grinning at her with Purple in my arms.

“I’m sorry I didn’t have enough time to tell both of you how your Dad was,” Mom tried to explain as she rubbed her forehead, looking so stressed at what was happening. “But the healers said he is recovering, but not as fast as an Alpha should.”

“It is the silver poison, right? And it has to do something with the curse, too. I saw Dad’s chest covered with dark veins.” I said to Mom as I stared into her eyes, trying to assess the situation. “How are we going to get rid of the curse now that the Jade blade is gone?”

“I am not really sure, Devon. Your Uncle Killian and I are still figuring things out,” she answered, sounding very exhausted. “I will make sure your Dad is okay.”

Mom frowned, though, when she noticed something on Purple, and then she pulled something from Purple’s fur. At first, I didn’t notice it until it was struck by the fluorescent light.

It was a black thread.

Mom’s face gradually went pale as she saw the thing, and I knew right away she knew something about it. Wherever Purple went, I had a feeling he had found the source of the thread.

“Go Purple. Bring me that thing,” I whispered to our wolf pup, and Purple immediately left, leaving Mom and Diana confused.

“What are you doing, Devon? What did you ask Purple to do?” Mom asked, and my sister was looking at me too, waiting for me to explain. I just shrugged and smiled at both of them, pretending it was some kind of a random trick.

But after half an hour, Purple came back with something in her mouth that made Mom curious.

“Purple brought us a Map!” Mom murmured as she studied everything that was embroidered on it, and then she added. “Gathering at the Wolf Tomb on full moonlight.”
