Chapter 38: Chapter 38

CHAPTER 38: THE GENDER

I was eager to eat the foods I picked from the refrigerator. I was about to empty everything when I suddenly heard Ethan's voice calling me so worried, so I stopped what I was eating for fear that something terrible might have happened, and I hurried to the living room.

As I stepped to the living room, I also responded to his call. "Ethan, I'm here; what's wrong?" until I came to the living room.

When Ethan saw me, he immediately hugged me tightly. I could feel his hug as if there was something that he seems to be feeling that he can't tell me. "What's wrong?" I asked him wondered why he was so emotional today?

"Nothing, I just thought you were gone," he said.

"Why would I be lost? Didn't I say I'll wait?" I chuckled as I respond to him.

He let go of his hug to me and asked, "Wait, what are you doing in the kitchen?"

"I felt hungry waiting, so I looked for food in the refrigerator," I explained to him.

I noticed that Leonard is not with him. I wondered. "Wait, where is Leonard? Why aren't you with him?" I asked as I stared into his beautiful eyes.

He seemed to avoid my gaze at him. "Hmm, h-he said, h-he can't accompany you now because there is an emergency in the company and his badly needed there," he said stuttered.

I don't stop staring at him even if he's avoiding me, and I can sense all his words are lies. I have this intuition, but I don't have proof, so I just rode his lies. "Oh, is that so? It's a pity, I am expecting, but it's okay, I always understand. I had no choice anyway," I said to him, faking my smile for him to think that I believe what he said.

"Come on, let's go," I added.

He answered me with a nod. I walked out of the house first, and he immediately followed me. We were already in his car. Ethan drove while I was next to him. I don't say a word, and neither does he. I'm wondering what the two of them are hiding.

I am uneasy. I want to know what Ethan and Leonard are up to; I want to ask him now, but I'm afraid of whatever the answer might be if I forced him to speak, so I keep my mouth from opening because I might not be able to control myself, and my mouth will slip and ask.

I was looking at every road we passed while my brain was floating in thoughts. It seems like it took us a while to move towards our destination. The vibes are different right now. It's not Ethan's habit not to talk with me every time he's with me. He always gives me words of motivation, but now, he doesn't.

He doesn't speak, and he doesn't look at me at all. I couldn't handle it anymore. It drives me crazy, so I faced him with asking. "Ethan, tell me the truth, what's the problem?"

"P-Problem? N-Nothing, why would you say that?" he said without looking at me.

"Why aren't you talking to me?" I asked him, looking at him intently when I notice that a bandage covered his right hand. I got panicked, so I asked him again before he could answer me, "Wait, what happened to your hand? Did you both fight earlier? Why? What's the reason? Tell me, Ethan?" I asked him sequentially.

He turned his steering wheel to the right and then stopped it on the side of the road. Then he turned to me, "I'm okay, we didn't fight at all, okay, and so don't panic. It was just a small cut from the broken mirror on my bathroom when I picked it up earlier." He responded.

"Oh, I see," I said, still I didn't believe him, but I don't want to contradict what he said. He might get annoyed with me. I can tell in his face that he is not in the mood right now.

"Shall I continue to drive now? Or do you have something to ask me again? Just ask it right now while I'm not yet driving." He said to me, annoyed.

I don't want him to get mad at me, so I just answered him with a nod. He then started the car again, and he continued driving. About a few minutes, we arrived at the clinic.

Many people lined up at my doctor's clinic, so Ethan and I sat on the vacant seat first to wait for my number to have called. Thirty minutes have passed, but my number hasn't called yet, because there were so many pregnant women in line, and they were ahead of me.

I'm already sweating from waiting. The good thing was, Ethan, is by my side. He is the one who wipes my sweat and who carries my bottle of water for me. He is such a caring person.

"No. 25," the secretary of my doctor called.

I was the one who had the number twenty-five. Ethan and I stood up together, approaching the secretary. We were already in front of the secretary. Ethan gave the number he was holding to her.

Then the doctor's secretary immediately ushered us into the room.

When we entered the room, the doctor was waiting for us. She was smiling. I immediately greeted her, and so did Ethan.

The doctor let us enter into a small room where an ultrasound machine has located.

I was a little nervous at the same time, excited. My mind is already playing with questions about my baby's gender. Whether it is a girl or a boy, and whether it is healthy in my stomach or not?

The secretary gave me the hospital gown and assisted me to wear it, and then I lay down in a small bed, ready myself to check. My doctor comes closer to me and sits beside me. She slowly lifted my hospital gown on the belly portion until it exposed my growing baby bump.

Ethan looked at my exposed growing baby bump. I felt a little embarrassed. My doctor's secretary gave her a bottle of jelly that she used for ultrasound, and she poured it in the transducer probe (a device used to detect which produced sound waves and receive echoes back). She then touched the lower portion of my stomach using the transducer probe.

Immediately my baby appeared on the monitor. I cried as I stared at him. I could hear the speed of his heartbeat. Now, I even felt more excited for his birth soon.

"Congrats, Mrs. Lee, you've got a baby boy! A healthy baby boy." The doctor said.

I answered the doctor with a smile. I can't even speak anymore; I felt like I wanted to jump for joy. The doctor gave some instructions, but my mind was still floating. I can't seem to hear what the doctor is saying. All I could see was Ethan nodding at her.

"Alyssa, are you okay? Doc. is asking you, but you aren't answering? Is there something that bothered you?" Ethan tapped me on the shoulder.

I suddenly back to reality, "H-Huh, y-yeah, I'm okay, sorry, I just felt excited. What is it again, doc.?" I speak. The doctor then continued speaking.
