Chapter 31: Chapter 31
CHAPTER 31: THE RESULT
Leonard came out of the meeting hall exhausted. He was the host of it, and their presentation took almost three hours to finish. He hurried into his office while his secretary was behind him, gasping as she followed him.
When he arrived at his office, he immediately sat down in his office chair and hurriedly fumbled with his cellphone tucked in his coat pocket. It shows in his face that he seemed eager to use it.
Looking at his cellphone, he was wondering why it flooded with missed calls from Alyssa. He immediately called it.
"Ring, ring, ring….!" The cellphone rang, but no one answered. He redialed the number still Alyssa didn't answer his call. He was suddenly nervous that he could not explain. He called his secretary to call one of his trusted men to come to his office.
About a few minutes later, one of his men arrived. It bowed in front of him. "Find the whereabouts of my wife right now! You already knew the rules; no one will ever know it. It's only you and me, understood?" he said.
"Yes, sir,"
Immediately his trusted man left in his office. Leonard was holding his head with both hands while sitting in his chair. The nervousness he felt in his chest did not go away.
When his cellphone suddenly rang. It was on top of his desk. He turned to it and picked it up with his big hand. He looked at it to see who had called. His eyebrows wrinkled. His brother Ethan called him.
He wondered why his younger brother called. What is his purpose? When he already knew that his younger brother was upset with him. Still, he answered it. "Hello?" Leonard said.
"Hello, brother, you have to come here right now to the Gregory Hospital! Alyssa has rushed her!" his brother that was on the other line said.
It seemed as if the sky suddenly covered him with what had told him. He didn't even let his brother talk on the other line, finished what he said. He automatically drops the phone call and hurriedly ran out of his office.
*****
Alyssa woke up from her unconsciousness. She seemed to be feeling pain in her head because of her fall earlier. She winced at the pain she felt.
"Alyssa, does anything hurt?" Ethan asked her.
"My head, it hurts," she responded.
"Do you want me to call the doctor?" Ethan asked again, worried.
Ethan was about to stand up to call the Doctor when Alyssa held his hand to stop him. He turned to her.
"No need, I can bear it," Alyssa said in a weak voice. "By the way, what am I doing here? Why am I here?" she asked.
"You lost consciousness in your classroom earlier," Ethan answered.
"Oh, is that so?"
"Yes," Ethan answered again.
He was about to touch Alyssa's head when suddenly he heard the door creak. He stopped what he was about to do and turned to the white door. It opened. They waited to see who opened it. A woman opened the door. It was wearing a white lab coat with a small metal name tag pinned on it. He was sure it was Alyssa's Doctor. He stood up to talk to the Doctor. "Hi, doc.," Ethan greeted.
The Doctor nodded to him and said, "Hello, I am Doctor Mendez, her attending physician."
Ethan immediately asked about Alyssa's condition. "Doc, what's wrong with her?"
"You don't need to worry about her. It's just normal to a woman who is pregnant and stressed." The Doctor explained.
Alyssa and Ethan's eyes widened at what the Doctor said. They both couldn't believe it. They exclaimed at the same time and said, "What, pregnant?"
The Doctor looked at Alyssa. "Yes, your three weeks pregnant. Congratulations, you're a mother now, Ms. De Guzman."
Alyssa was speechless at what the Doctor said. How would she tell it to her husband? If they are beginning to be on good terms. She didn't know if her husband would accept her condition.
Ethan was also silent. He couldn't believe his older brother impregnated the woman he admired the most.
Now Ethan realizes that the reason his big brother disagreed with him was to woo Alyssa. It's because his brother planned to use her. Knowing this, he was even more annoyed with his older brother.
The Doctor continued to speak to the two of them. It instructs what to do and what not to do. To prevent miscarriage but none of them listened. Both of them are thinking of other things.
The Doctor noticed that the two seemed not paying attention. She called their attention. "Are you both listening?" The Doctor asked.
They both came back to themself and said in unison. "Oh, okay, doc, we will,"
Even if the Doctor is hesitant if whether they are listening to what she is saying or not, she still nodded to them. Then the Doctor left as well.
After the Doctor left the room, they looked at each other without saying a word. Alyssa could see in Ethan's eyes that he didn't seem happy with the news. What was on Alyssa's mind was probably the reason is that he's just worried about her.
She was the same way. She was worried that Leonard might not accept it and it would be more elusive to her, so she decided to thicken her face and plead with Ethan.
Ethan was about to turn when Alyssa called, "Ethan,"
"Yes," he answered.
Alyssa looked at him with teary eyes. Ethan had this feeling that she may cry anytime.
"Can I ask you a favor?" she asked.
"What is it?" he asked.
"Can we not tell your brother first that I am pregnant? I don't want him to be surprised, and aside from that, I'm not yet ready to tell him the truth. Please, give me a little time. Will you," she pleaded.
Ethan could see in Alyssa's eyes how desperate she was at her pleas. He did nothing and agreed to her wishes. "Okay, I won't,"
Alyssa smiled at him, "Thanks,"
He nodded to her.
*****
Alyssa fell asleep again while Ethan did not take his eyes off watching her.
"Tok, tok, tok…!" someone knocks on the door. Ethan looked at the door without astonishment marked on his face. He seemed to know already who it was. Slowly the white door opened. Ethan was right on his suspicion. It was his older brother that came.
His clothes were almost soaking wet because of his excessive sweat. It even gasped as it enters the room. Ethan estimated that his brother runs to the hospital.
"What happened to her?" Leonard asked worriedly.
"She fainted," Ethan answered in a low voice.
"What did the doctor say?" he asked again.
Ethan stood up in his seat and said, "I think you two couples should talk. Now that you're here, maybe I don't need to be here anymore." At once out of the room.
