[Step Shift Activated]

Instantly, Zen vanished from view just in time as a massive ball of lightning erupted from the boss’s mouth, blasting forward and tearing through the ground with so much force that trenches split open and scorch marks burned deep into the earth.

The energy beam continued without pause, crashing into a thick tree, shredding through the bark before completely uprooting it from the ground. Dead beasts that laid in its path were instantly disintegrated in the blink of an eye, leaving behind nothing but smoke and a trail of destruction that stretched several meters long.

A few moments later, Zen appeared five meters away, on his knees and gasping for air, his hand clutching his chest as his heart thumped like a drum.

It wasn’t his fault—he had genuinely thought he was about to die. His life had flashed before his very eyes, every memory flooding in at once. His heart had leapt two dozen beats in a second, and if not for his quick reflexes, he knew without a doubt he’d be nothing but ash by now.

’Fuck, fuck, fuck! I’ve never faced a beast this damn fast. What the freaking hell?! Now I only have one use of Step Shift left for the day. What do I do? How do I even fight a beast that moves almost as fast as lightning? This is insane! I didn’t even see it move.’ Zen thought, his heart still pounding but slowly settling as he inhaled and exhaled heavily.

Sweat poured down his face in streams. He wiped it away with his sleeve as he got back on his feet, a deep frown cutting across his face. His gaze locked onto the wolf, which stood motionless at a distance, staring into the smoke-filled horizon as if admiring its own destruction—completely convinced the human had been obliterated.

’Let me sneak up o...’

Zen took a careful step forward, but the dry twig beneath his boot betrayed him. The crack echoed through the eerie silence, and instantly, the beast snapped its head around to face him.

The Reaver swallowed hard as the creature’s furious white eyes locked onto him like a predator spotting its breakfast.

The wolf darted forward, turning into a blur of motion as it leaped high, aiming to crush Zen into the ground. But just in time, Zen rolled to the side, narrowly avoiding the devastating impact.

The beast slammed into the earth with terrifying force, the ground cracking open beneath it and forming a crater nearly four meters deep. Dirt and dust shot into the air as Zen sprang to his feet, his sword trembling slightly in his grip.

Feeling no weight beneath its claws, the Alpha wolf lifted its head, snapping its gaze back to Zen, rage blazing in its glowing eyes.

’I’ve faced B-ranked bosses before, but none of them were this damn fast. The only one that came close was the Dredfang Lycan boss... and even then, I had Vynm’s and the others’ help. But now, I’m all alone. Shit! Zen, run!’

Teeth clenched tight, Zen gripped his sword harder and bolted away. His boots pounded against the ground, the sound echoing with each desperate stride.

The wolf’s lips curled into a wicked smirk as it watched its prey flee. It didn’t even use its lightning veil this time—it dashed forward calmly, deliberately holding back its full speed, almost as if it wanted to toy with him.

Zen’s heart hammered violently against his ribs, every instinct screaming at him to go faster or die trying. The beast was gaining ground, its movements fluid, silent, and terrifyingly confident.

"Come on, faster! Faster, fool! Don’t slow down!" Zen shouted, hyping himself up as he risked a glance over his shoulder. The beast was still there, close enough for him to see that twisted smirk plastered across its furry face—a look that promised death.

{Buhahahahaha! What a wimp! Look at you—the so-called hero who dreams of challenging the Game Lord, a being who can twist the rules of the game however he wants and summon humans from reality into this world whenever he feels like it!

But here you are, the wannabe SSS-rank Reaver, running for your life from a common B-rank beast. How pitiful! I’m laughing my motherboard out!}

"Shut the hell up, you motherfucking system! If it’s that easy, then come ahead and face this literal lightning beast yourself!" Zen roared in frustration, his voice echoing through the forest. He turned his face forward to see where he was going, his breath ragged and heart pounding. Out of instinct, he glanced back—but his eyes widened in shock. The beast was gone.

"Huh?" he muttered, not daring to slow down. His instincts screamed that something wasn’t right, and before he could react—

He slammed hard into something solid and bounced backward, crashing onto his backside. Pain flared through his body as he winced, slowly tilting his head up—only to see the Alpha wolf standing a few inches away, its enormous frame blocking out the faint moonlight.

Each breath it exhaled released a thick cloud of steam, and arcs of lightning crackled wildly around its paws. The air itself vibrated with raw energy as the beast crouched low, ready to explode forward.

’Cr... crap!’ Zen’s thoughts raced like lightning itself. His entire body trembled as fear crawled down his spine.

{I know I’ve said this before, and it didn’t happen, but this time, I’m serious. Here’s my farewell gift: I hope you rot in hell after this beast turns you into dust. I won’t miss you, you annoying NPC!}

The beast’s deafening howl tore through the night, echoing across the forest like rolling thunder. Leaves shook violently, and Zen’s ears rang from the sheer force of it. The wolf’s glowing eyes then locked back onto him—merciless, unblinking, and hungry.

Zen’s heart nearly stopped. He was on his back, scrambling helplessly, his hands digging into the dirt as he pushed himself backward. His sword had already been de-equipped during his frantic run, leaving him completely defenseless. He kept scooting away, panic written all over his face, even though he knew there was nowhere left to run.

If the beast wanted to, it could appear in front of him with a single flash and end everything in an instant.

{I guess the Game Lord doesn’t even need to bother dealing with your existence anymore. Your veil was supposed to cause him a lot of trouble if it ever evolved. But now that you’re about to die, he can sit back, relax, and let nature take its course. What a relief, right?}

’Huh? Veil! Oh shit! That’s right—I fucking have a veil!’

Zen almost facepalmed himself, realization slapping him harder than the collision had. But before he could even act or think of how to use it, the beast zipped forward again—this time, moving even faster than before, its lightning flaring brighter, its claws gleaming with killing intent.
