Chapter 85: Chapter 85

Chapter 85 Run!

MAIA'S POV

'Maia, that is not Lucian,' Avi said in a panic.

'Avi, we need to run,' I mumbled in my head.

'We won't make it far even if we try. We have better chances staying still and assessing him than moving,' Avi replied.

I took deep breaths as I tried to calm myself.

The black wolf took slow steps towards me. As it inched closer to me, my heart kept beating faster and faster.

When he was a couple of feet away from me, I closed my eyes in fear of what was about to come.

'Thank you for everything, Avi,' I said.

A loud growl snapped me out of my almost meet and greet with death.

"Aaaarrrrgggghhhh!!!"

I looked up and saw a dark gray wolf jump in front of me. The wolf kept growling at the black wolf as if it was commanding him to stand down.

A few seconds passed until one of them attacked. I felt like my heart was in my throat as I watched the two wolves fighting.

'Maia, we should make a run now,' Avi said in my head.

I heard what Avi said but it was as if I couldn't move from my position.

'Maia!' I heard Avi yell in my head but yet again, my body was in a trance as I stared at the scene that was being unfolded in front of me.

'Maia, damn it! Are you trying to get us killed?' I heard Avi yell in my head.

'What? Huh?' I asked, panicking.

'I said RUN, BITCH! RUN!' She yelled again.

I blinked a couple of times before her words sank into my brain.

RUN!

I picked myself up and ran as fast as I could. Without looking back, I jumped over logs and dried branches. I did not care if I was barefoot; all I had running in my mind was to get back to the pack-house in one piece.

'Avi, we need to shift. I don't think I can run any faster than this,' I suggested.

'You just thought about that now, you genius?' She spat.

'Are we going to shift or are you going to get us killed?' I snapped.

'Fine! Fine! Let me take over, then,' she replied.

I was just about to give her control when a wolf growled behind me. Without even looking behind me, my whole body shivered in fear.

'Shit!Shit! Shit!' Avi kept repeating like a mantra.

I closed my eyes, scared of what might come next.

A couple of seconds passed when I heard the crushing of leaves. It only meant one thing, the wolf was moving.

I was already anticipating some sort of kick or clawing. Instead, I felt something wet on my face.

I slowly opened my eyes and saw the black wolf nudging my hand with its head.

'It's Lucian,' Avi said excitedly.

"Lucian?" I asked the wolf.

The black wolf let out a small whimper as if answering my question.

"Hi, Lucian, thank you for saving us," I said, patting its head.

He let out a small growl and I immediately turned my head around to check my surroundings.

I was confused when I saw nobody around.

"What is wrong, Lucian?" I asked.

He just stared at me before he lowered his body.

"You want me to ride on your back?" I asked.

He nodded his head in response.

Talking to a wolf without any mind link was really hard.

I got on his back and held tightly on his furs as he ran through the forest. I was going to ask him where we were going when I realized that it would just be hard for me to understand since a wolf can't talk.

After a few minutes of Lucian dashing through the forest, he stopped at a very familiar place which was the Lake House. I got off his back and waited until he shifted back to his human form.

Before I even had the chance to ask if he was done, I was already bombarded with questions.

"Why did you run? Something could have happened to you. What if then there was another rogue hiding?" He asked, stalking his way towards me.

"I am sorry. I panicked and ran right away. I thought it was another rogue or something," I replied, apologizing.

"What were you even doing in the forest? Did I not tell you to stay in the pack-house? What if I arrived too late? Or worse, what if you got hurt?" He yelled.

I flinched at his sudden outburst.

"Did you expect me to just sit there and do nothing? I was worried and I had to do something," I explained.

"Wasn't I out there looking for the child? That was my job, Maia. Not yours!" He exclaimed.

"Can't we focus on the part where I found the child and we saved her?" I asked.

"Yeah. You saved her but you endangered yourself. That is unacceptable!" He argued.

"The priority was the child and she got home safely. That is all that matters," I replied, turning my back on him.

"That is all that matters? Have you forgotten what you are to this pack? To me?" He asked, exasperated.

"The people in the pack are always the priority. No matter what happens they should always be put first. Without them, there is no pack," I argued.

"Without you, there will be no me," he said.

My heart skipped a beat. I slowly turned around and saw him looking at me with sad eyes. I could not help myself but wrap my arms around him and hug his worries and sadness away.

"I am sorry," I whispered in his ears.

"I was so worried. When Emily told me that you were cornered by two rogues, I lost it all. All I was seeing was black when I saw that stupid wolf about to attack you. I was so scared," he mumbled.

"Shhh... It's okay. I am okay. You saved me and I am okay. Don't worry about it too much. All that matters is that the child is safe and we all are safe," I said, trying to get him to focus on something else.

"Don't do that again. I don't know what I will do if I lose you. I can't lose you again," he replied, hugging me tighter and closer to him.
