Chapter 37: Chapter 37
Chapter 37 The Chosen Mate
PAMELA'S POV
Being the only child of one of the greatest Alpha in the country was not easy. I had certain standards to meet and being a perfect Luna was one of them.
Luckily, I had Lucius as a friend while growing up. Since our parents were good friends, we practically grew up together. We were the perfect partner in crime. He was my protector when we started studying. No one dared to bully me or pick on me because they feared him.
My feelings for him started to develop when we were in High school. I started noticing how handsome he was. His messy hair that seemed to always look perfect, his pointed nose, perfect jaw and those lips. Damn those lips! I have been wanting to kiss those lips for the longest time ever. Even if it was just a peck or a random mistake, I would dig it.
When his parents died during the great war, he was devastated. I had never seen him like that. It broke my heart to see him break into pieces and just watch helplessly. I tried to be there for him the best that I could. Comforting your best friend who just lost his parents on the same day was something that I never thought I would have to do.
Thankfully, after a few months have passed, he started getting better. I think he just really had to as well because his pack needed him. Losing his parents also meant that he will be the new King Alpha, and it was a huge responsibility. Unfortunately, his brother, Uriah, left him all by himself.
Being in the castle all alone with no family around to help or talk to take a toll on him. My dad wanted to help him, so he suggested that he should start traveling in hope of finding his mate. With his mate beside him, things can get better for him. He needed a family, someone to be there for him.
After years of traveling and searching, he never found her. Each and every single time he would come home from his search, he would always be devastated. Until he came to a point where he gave up looking for his mate.
Even though he gave up, my parents never stopped helping him. Since they knew how heartbroken he was after losing his parents and not finding his mate, my parents proposed a plan. Instead of looking for his mate, he will choose a mate instead-a chosen mate.
Oftentimes, when a wolf has been looking for his or her mate for quite a long time and had no luck finding them, they tend to choose their own mate. There were also times when a wolf would get a chosen mate after losing their first mates because of rejection or death. This was their way of coping with the loss of their mates.
I had a feeling that my dad would suggest me as his chosen mate since I had not found my mate yet. It had been a couple of years as well and I have gotten tired attending all the Royal balls in hope of finding my mate. After crossing almost half of the world, I just gave up.
"You and Pamela have been great friends since you two were small. What perfect match you two are given your history?" Dad implied.
"Dad!" I hissed, totally embarrassed by the situation that my dad had gotten me into.
"What? I am simply stating facts. His father was my best friend. It is just right that I suggest to him someone that I trust and suitable for him," dad replied.
I was on the verge of facepalming myself as I wished for the earth to just open up and eat me alive.
After dad's absurd suggestions, Lucius and I went on a walk to the garden. For a couple of minutes, there was complete silence between us. He looked like he was lost in his thoughts, and I was still feeling weird after I heard dad's suggestion.
"I'm sorry about what dad said. You know he is getting old and so his brain is getting crazier," I apologized to break the silence between us.
"It's okay. Besides, Uncle Cassian is right. I definitely need a Luna to run the pack. There are only limited things I can take care of, and the pack needs a Luna as well," he said.
"There is no rush in finding one, though. Just like what Dad said, you need someone you can trust. Who knows, you might suddenly meet your mate in the next few weeks?" I replied, trying to lighten up his mood.
He stopped walking and looked at me.
"You," he said.
"Me?" I asked.
"Yes, you. I grew up with you. We know each other like brothers and sisters. If there is one person I trust, it's you. So, if I'm going to choose a mate, it would be you," he replied.
I was taken aback by what he said. I did not expect him to say that.
"You should not rush into deciding things, Lucius. Besides, you have been running the pack for how many years now all by yourself. A couple more months won't hurt, you know. Picking a mate is not an easy thing to do. Your pack depends on it, too." I explained.
"I know that my pack depends on it. That is why I am choosing you. Well, that is if you would agree. I want you to know that there is no other person I would rather run the pack with than you," he fired back before he continued walking.
I was not sure if he heard how my heart skipped a beat with what he had said, but there was a secret that I had been hiding from him ever since we were in high school. Growing up with him was easy and hard. I had to hide certain things from him because I was scared that it would change our relationship.
I have developed romantic feelings towards Lucius ever since we were in our second year of High School. It was during one rainy day when he offered me his jacket after I got soaked in the rain when I realized that I was falling in love with him. I never had the courage to tell him about it. Every time I would see girls throwing themselves at him, I kill them a million ways in my head.
Hearing him wanting to run his pack with me was like him proposing to me. I want nothing more than to be on his side.
When I realized that I had fallen behind him already, I picked up my pace and caught up to him. I held onto his arms and looked at him.
"Okay. I will be your chosen Luna," I announced with a smile.
He simply smiled at me and ruffled my hair, just like what he always does.
To say that my dad was very pleased would be an understatement. He was ecstatic. Mom started planning about the ceremony and everything, even though we planned to wait for three months just in case we met any of our mates.
During those three months, all I prayed for was to be Lucius' chosen mate. Even though I know that it will be purely business, I know that a day would come where he would have to have an heir. I would wait until that day came and would make sure that I would serve him and please him with all that I am.
Unfortunately, something came up two weeks before the ceremony. Rogue sightings and reports have incredibly become high that we had to cancel our plans. Lucius and my parents were scared that they might attack during the ceremony. Although I was saddened by the news, the safety of the pack would always be prioritized.
Although I wanted to keep our relationship strictly formal, I could not contain my feelings for him anymore. So, a few weeks later, I went and visited him in the castle.
"Pamela, to what do I owe the pleasure of your visit?" he asked, greeting me with a side hug.
"Can't I just visit you for no reason?" I asked with my brows raised.
"Of course, you can. I was just surprised, that's all. Uncle Cassian did not inform me that you were coming when I talked to him earlier," he said.
"Well, that's the purpose of a surprise!"
Just like always, he took me to my favorite restaurant in town for dinner and when we got back to the castle, that was when I confessed to him.
"Lucius, there is something I have been meaning to tell you." My voice was barely above a whisper when I started.
My heart was beating fast, and I was having second thoughts.
"What is it?" He asked and glanced at me.
I took the courage to look him in the eye and took a deep breath.
"Lucius, there is something I must confess. Ever since we were in high school, I was secretly admiring you. I have loved you for as long as I can remember. Even though I knew that we weren't mated by the Moon Goddess, I still loved you with all my heart. I love you and I fear what would happen when you meet your mate. I know that you would choose her over me, but just the thought of it scared me because I know my heart will break into a million pieces. Regardless, I will still choose to be beside you and stand by your side until then. I hope you could forgive me if I tell you that every night, I wish upon the moon for you to not cross paths with your mate. I know that it sounded selfish of me. It's because I know that in the end, you would never be truly mine. I am simply borrowing you until you find her and when that day comes, forgive me if I will fight for you because I will. Until I can, I will fight for you."
