Chapter 58: Chapter 58
Abhay’s P.O.V
The battle raged around me like a violent tornado, the weight of the gun and knifes in my hands a stark reminder of the danger lurking in the shadows. My heart raced with adrenaline, each sound sending a jolt of fear through my veins but I couldn't afford to let fear consume me, not when Mink's life hung in the balance.
I spotted movement ahead, the glint of moonlight reflecting off fur, and I knew the wolves were closing in. Gripping the gun tighter, I steadied my breathing and prepared for the inevitable confrontation. It wasn't much, just a simple handgun and a knife, but it was all I needed. Mink and the other wolves were fighting in their wolf form, so this was nothing compared to them.
As the first wolf lunged at me, teeth bared in a snarl, instinct took over. I sidestepped its attack, the knife flashing in my hand as I slashed out, catching the wolf across the muzzle. It yelped in pain, momentarily stunned, and I seized the opportunity to fire off a shot, the recoil reverberating through my arms.
Two down, but there was no time to celebrate. More wolves closed in, their growls echoing through the darkness. I could feel the weight of their collective gaze upon me, hunger and aggression fueling their every move. But just as I was about to turn and look for Mink, a grey wolf jumped up from behind one of the boulders, and started to chase me with all its might.
“Fuck!” I turned around and ran, noticing how I was getting cornered from all sides. But just as all hope seemed to have been lost, I spotted the edge of the Jharna not far from where I was.
In this case, I had the upper hand, since this was my home and I knew every nook and cranny of this area. Taking a sudden right turn, I grabbed onto the nearest rock formation, but the wolf behind me wasn’t so fortunate. In trying to halt its progress, it slipped on the fresh snow and hurdled towards the Jharna at groundbreaking speed.
I watched the grey wolf struggle for balance on the ledge, but soon enough, the snow gave way and it dropped down several hundred feet to meet its death in the crushing waters.
I breathed a sigh of relief once the wolf was gone but my mind never wandered off the battle raging behind me. The purity of the snow had been tainted by the blood of so many innocents blindly following their Alphas.
Was this really how it was supposed to end? In blood and death and the end of this place that had become our paradise?
But amidst the chaos, my focus remained on Mink, her form a distant silhouette amidst the turmoil.
Then I saw it, the unmistakable sight of Mink being cornered by both Alphas, their imposing figures casting long shadows against the ground. Something wasn't right, a gut feeling that sent a shiver down my spine.
She was covered in blood, her white fur covered with patches of rust red. And yet she fought with such ferocity. But she was outnumbered as the two Alphas attacked her at once. They tried to aim their bites at her pregnant belly, but Mink was extremely cautious and talented. But even from this far I could see that she was starting to tire.
I froze on the spot when Arsalan caught her in a chokehold with his fangs around her neck, but Mink moved around her head just in time before he could lock his muzzle in for the bite and danced out of his way.
I felt helpless just standing and watching her get attacked from both sides as she tried her best to defend herself. No other wolf came at me and from what I could tell, our people were winning, but everything was now on Mink’s shoulders. It wouldn’t matter if we won if Mink was defeated.
Without a second thought, I made a split-second decision, aiming for the Alpha with the black fur, and aiming for its leg.
The gunshot rang out, shattering the silence as the Alpha staggered back, a pained howl tearing through the night. Mink's eyes widened in surprise, a mixture of relief and gratitude flickering across her features as she seized the opportunity to break free from her attackers.
I didn't stop to revel in my small victory. Instead, I shifted my focus back to the remaining wolves, determination burning bright within me. However, my shot had caught the attention of the black furred Alpha, and now, he staggered towards me, primal rage emitting from his form as he opened his jaws to let out a fierce growl.
As I raised the gun, my hands trembling with adrenaline, I focused all my attention on the target. The Alpha's piercing gaze locked onto mine, its eyes filled with a primal fury that sent shivers down my spine but there was no turning back now. With a deep breath, I squeezed the trigger, the deafening sound of the gunshot echoing through the silent forest.
The bullet found its mark, striking the Alpha square in the chest. For a moment, it seemed as if time stood still, the beast freezing in its tracks, its enraged growl piercing the air. But my victory was short-lived as the Alpha's eyes blazed with newfound fury.
In an instant, it lunged towards me, its massive form barreling through the snow with terrifying speed. Panic surged through me as I fumbled for another bullet, my heart pounding in my chest. But as I frantically checked the gun, dread washed over me like a tidal wave – it was empty.
I cursed under my breath, my mind racing as I realized I was defenseless against the wrath of the Alpha. With no other option, I drew the knife from its sheath, my hands trembling as I braced myself for the inevitable confrontation.
As the Alpha closed in, its jaws dripping with saliva, I knew I had to act fast. With a surge of adrenaline, I dodged to the side, narrowly avoiding its snapping jaws but before I could gain any distance, the beast lunged forward once again, its teeth sinking into my shoulder with brutal force.
Agony exploded through me as I felt the searing pain of its bite, hot blood staining the pristine snow beneath me. With a desperate cry, I struggled to break free, but the Alpha's grip was like a vice, its strength overwhelming.
As the world spun around me, I found myself teetering on the edge of the Jharna, the deafening roar of the waterfall thundering in my ears. Desperation clawed at my chest as I stared into the abyss below, the icy waters churning below like a hungry beast waiting to consume me.
The Alpha finally released my shoulders and I fell to the ground hard, just as howls went up in the air from all directions. I didn’t know what was happening, but my entire body felt like it was on fire.
The black wolf suddenly raised its head and howled into the night as well. I didn’t understand still, but if my guess was correct…someone had just died and this was a howl to honor the dead.
It would’ve been the perfect opportunity for me to strike the Alpha above me, but agony and exhaustion had me pinned to the spot. Not to mention the fact that my knife had slid out of my hand when the wolf had attacked me.
But then, the wolf turned and ran back, leaving me alone in the ground as the sound of the waters kept me from closing my eyes.
Was this it? No…it couldn’t be…I needed to get up. I needed to fight back…
But with my life blood draining at a rapid pace…I knew my end was near.
