Chapter 52: Chapter 52
Mink’s P.O.V
My heart pounded against my ribcage like a frantic drum as I watched Abhay step in front of me, taking a stance in front of my whole pack.
"Abhay, step back!" I hissed urgently, my voice tight with fear. "You can't win against a wolf, especially not one that's lost its mind."
Abhay glanced back at me, his expression determined yet tinged with concern. "Mink, listen to me," he said firmly, but there was a hint of desperation in his voice.
"I know you're strong enough to take them on, but you're pregnant. You shouldn't be taking on this kind of challenge in the first place."
I shook my head, frustration and fear warring within me. "So what if I'm pregnant?" I retorted, my voice trembling with emotion. “I can deal with them just fine.”
“You can, I know you can,” Abhay spoke reasonably. "But that doesn't mean you have to agree to every stupid request thrown your way. I can handle them myself."
The wolves growled menacingly, their eyes wild with aggression as they took another step forward. I could feel the hairs on the back of my neck standing on end, a primal instinct screaming at me to rip their beating hearts out of their chest cavity, but I had to remind myself that they were pack.
I met their eyes one by one, unbothered by the challenge, but it seemed to rub them the wrong way as they snarled viciously, making those standing around them flinch away from the aggression.
"Mink, please," Abhay pleaded, his voice cracking with urgency. "Think about the baby. We can't afford to take unnecessary risks."
I felt a surge of frustration and helplessness wash over me. Why did everything have to be so complicated? I wanted to assert my dominance, make sure that no one would ever dare to challenge me again.
But deep down, I knew Abhay was right. I couldn't risk my life or the life of my unborn child for the sake of pride or stubbornness. Taking a deep breath, I stepped back, my hands clenched at my sides. But somehow, the two aggressors thought of this as a way to prove their point.
"If a male Alpha was fighting instead," one of them spat out, "then we wouldn’t have to worry about pregnancy or childbirth, as the female would be at home, giving birth."
The words struck me like a physical blow, igniting a fire of fury within me. How could they reduce my worth as a leader to my gender? But before I could respond, a chorus of protests erupted from the crowd, surprising me with its intensity.
"Mink has been nothing but fair to us!" a voice rang out, cutting through the chaos. I turned to see several wolves stepping forward, their eyes blazing with determination.
"She took us in when nobody else would. We fled from abusive Alphas, seeking refuge and justice. And under Mink's leadership, we have found it."
More voices joined in, echoing sentiments of gratitude and support. "Mink is our Alpha, and she will lead us to victory!" they declared, their conviction unwavering.
A sense of pride swelled within me, eclipsing the fear and uncertainty that had clouded my mind moments before. I met the gaze of each wolf standing before me, seeing not just followers, but family — a family that had chosen me, just as I had chosen them.
“But an Alpha has always been a male!” The aggressors fought back, refusing to back down. “It’s only fair that a male leads our pack!”
“Mink has been a righteous Alpha! It doesn’t matter if she is a Female Alpha, but she is Alpha nonetheless” It was Ruksaar, her fur bristling with righteous anger. “And I have chosen to serve her as my Alpha, and I hope we all do the same.”
As tensions simmered within our pack, I could feel the weight of the brewing conflict pressing down on me like a heavy stone. Voices rose in heated arguments, each word laced with defiance and frustration. I stood at the center of it all, trying to maintain a semblance of control, but it seemed as though chaos had already taken hold.
"You can't just demand that!" One voice, sharp with indignation, cut through the tumult. "We have our own ways, our own traditions!"
Across from him stood Kieran, his stance equally defiant. "Traditions that hold us back! We need to adapt, to evolve, or we'll be left behind."
The words hung in the air, a challenge thrown into the fray like a lit match in a tinderbox. Around them, members of our pack began to take sides, their loyalties split down the middle. Some nodded in agreement with Ruksaar, while others cast their lot with Kieran. I could see the lines being drawn, the rift widening with each passing moment.
I stepped forward, my voice cutting through the rising clamor. "Enough!" I growled, the sound rumbling deep in my chest. "This bickering serves no one. We are a pack, united by blood and purpose. We must find common ground, not tear each other apart."
But my words seemed to fall on deaf ears, drowned out by the fervor of the argument. With a heavy heart, I watched as my own pack turned against itself, the bonds of kinship strained to their breaking point. But even amidst the chaos, I knew that we could not afford to let this division weaken us. There were greater threats lurking beyond our borders, waiting to pounce upon us when we were at our most vulnerable.
And then, just as I feared the dispute would escalate beyond control, it happened. One of the dissenters, fueled by rage and defiance, lunged at me with claws bared. Instinct took over, and before I could even register what was happening, Abhay was there, interposing himself between me and my attacker.
Summoning every ounce of authority I possessed, I raised my voice once more, commanding all to stand down, my fear for Abhay’s safety taking a chokehold on my heart. “Enough! Everyone, STOP!”
Suddenly, every wolf froze in place as if time itself had halted. It was a sight that defies logic, leaving me rooted to the spot with a mixture of awe and confusion swirling within me.
An eerie silence descended upon the room as everyone stood rooted to their spot, their eyes showing their conflict and horror, and yet, no one was able to move.
"Mink, what's going on?" Abhay's voice cuts through the stillness, his eyes wide with disbelief as he turns to me for answers but I have none to give. My mind races, trying to comprehend the impossible situation unfolding before us.
"I... I don't know," I stammer, my voice barely above a whisper as I try to make sense of the inexplicable phenomenon. How could this be happening? And more importantly, what can I do about it?
Abhay steps closer, his movements unhindered by whatever strange force has gripped the rest of our pack. His gaze meets mine, searching for reassurance or perhaps an explanation that I cannot provide.
"Mikalya, this... this might be the true extent of your power," he suggests, his words hanging in the air like a revelation.
"My power?" I echo the concept foreign yet somehow fitting in this moment of surreal clarity. “You mean my ability to freeze people in their movement?”
“Yes, just like what you did with that Beta earlier.” He nodded enthusiastically, as if he had found some kind of solution. “You said it yourself that you didn’t know the full extent of your powers, but here, with over two hundred people in this room frozen in place…I think we have an estimate of what you’re truly capable of.”
"But what do I do?" I ask, my voice trembling with uncertainty. The weight of responsibility settles heavily upon my shoulders as I realize that the fate of my pack now rests in my hands.
Abhay's expression softens, a glimmer of faith shining in his eyes as he takes my hand in his.
"You'll figure it out, Mink. Just trust in yourself and your instincts. You're stronger than you realize. How did you normally unfreeze your enemies?"
“I didn’t…they stated to regain functioning after a few moments themselves.” I told him, my tone colored with urgency as I looked around. “It didn’t even last a minute.”
“Then you do nothing, just wait and watch. Soon enough, they will go back to normal.”
His words offer a sliver of hope amidst the chaos, a beacon to guide me through the darkness of uncertainty. With Abhay by my side, I stood and watched as my packmates slowly recovered one by one, their movements returning to their bodies and they now looked at me with awe and respect.
The aggressors from before bowed their head and stayed quiet, retreating into the shadows as they understood the true extent of my powers as an Alpha. Even Ruksaar, who had been my closest companion for the last century, looked at me in awe at my newfound strength.
But now, as I faced Abhay, his eyes ablaze with conviction, I couldn't help but wonder if there was more to it than I had ever realized. His words echoed in my mind, stirring something deep within me.
"You have a gift, Mink," he had said, his voice soft and understanding. "A power unlike any other. We now have the upper-hand in this war."
Could it be possible? Could my power truly be used to freeze more than one opponent in battle? The thought both thrilled and terrified me, for if it were true, then I held within me the potential to become a force unlike any other.
As I plunged back into the fray, my mind raced with possibilities. If I could indeed harness this power, then there was no telling what I could achieve. With Abhay's words echoing in my mind, I knew that I had only scratched the surface of what I was truly capable of.
