Chapter 51: Chapter 51

Mink’s P.O.V

I watched the packmates murmur about the disaster that had just hit us like a bolt from the blue. The Jammu pack led by Arsalan Ali, our long-standing rivals, had dared to send their beta into our territory, a brazen move that spoke volumes of their intentions. But now, with the beta lying dead at our borders, there was no denying the storm that brewed on the horizon. War was inevitable.

I paced back and forth in my office, the tension palpable in the air as Ruksaar, Kashmira and Abhay stood in front of me, their faces drawn in concentration as they tried to comprehend the magnitude of the situation.

"We cannot afford to underestimate them," I declared, my voice firm despite the turmoil raging within me. "They will not rest until they have torn us apart, piece by piece."

Eyes flickered with uncertainty, murmurs of doubt threading through the room like shadows in the night. "But Mink," Ruksaar spoke up, her tone laced with concern, "they outnumber us, and their strength is unmatched. How can we hope to stand against them?"

I halted in my tracks, turning to face her with a steely resolve burning in my gaze. "We may be outnumbered, but we are not without our own strengths," I replied, my words ringing with conviction.

"If we consider the women in our pack, we just may be able to match them in strength. So what we need to do is start training immediately."

I turned to face Kashmira, who looked pale in comparison to the others. “Mira? What’s on your mind?”

“It’s nothing…I’m just…I’m scared, Mink.” She sighed, looking up at me through glistening eyes. “When I ran away…I knew that wasn’t the end of it, that I would have to face him someday…but I never expected that this is how I was going to face him…”

I strode over to stand in front of her, placing a hand on her shoulders to force her to meet my eyes. Wiping away the moisture from her cheeks, I looked into her eyes with renewed determination. “That’s why we need to fight harder, Mira. You must face your demons and make sure that your son is proud of you. Fight for Kushal. Also, if there is anything you know about his weakness, let me know. So we can use it against him during a-”

“Alpha.”

The disruption made me turn towards the door in frustration, only to find Raunak standing there, looking confused and distressed.

“Raunak?” I frowned as I turned to face him. “Why are you here and not securing the borders? Why did you leave your post?”

“Everyone is here now Alpha…it’s a mess.” He swallowed, looking down at his hands. “Everyone has gathered in the living area, and they are just as confused as to what is about to happen. Everyone is scared and panic is spreading. The news about the Beta’s death…it seems to have spread throughout the pack already.”

Dread settled in the pit of my stomach as the gravity of the situation finally registered in my mind. But I didn’t have time to worry about my own dread and confusion. It was time to help my pack settle down and reassure them that all hope was not lost.

“Let’s go see what’s happening.” I told everyone in the room as I strode out into the hallway and into the living room.

Abhay, Raunak, Kashmira and Ruksaar followed close behind me and as soon as we entered the room, all eyes turned towards us.

It was a mess indeed.

I stood amidst the murmurs and whispers, the weight of their words heavy upon me. Men and women alike approached, their expressions a mix of disappointment and frustration. They spoke of their initial hopes when they chose to follow a female Alpha like me—they had believed in the promise of peace, an end to the constant strife that plagued our kind but now, their disillusionment was palpable, their trust shattered by the reality of my actions.

“The situation may be unavoidable, but we have strength in unity,” I addressed my packmates, making sure I met their eyes to let them know I wasn’t about to back down from a challenge. “We must prepare and we must remain ready to face the opponent without fear. If they figure out we are fearful, they will think of us as weak. It’s something we cannot let happen.”

Yet, despite my words, doubt lingered like a stubborn shadow, refusing to be dispelled. The whispers grew louder, spreading like wildfire through the ranks of my pack. Fear gnawed at their hearts, a poisonous seed sown by the specter of impending conflict.

"We cannot win," they whispered, their voices trembling with uncertainty. "We are doomed to die."

It was a sentiment that threatened to tear us apart from within, like a fissure splitting the very foundation of our pack but I refused to let despair take hold, refusing to yield to the crushing weight of defeat before the battle had even begun.

"Enough!" I bellowed, my voice echoing off the walls with a force that silenced the murmurs in an instant.

"We will not cower in fear, nor will we surrender to the darkness that threatens to consume us. We will fight, tooth and claw, until our last breathe if need be. For we are warriors, and we will not be defeated so easily."

With a determined nod, I issued the command for intense training to begin immediately, knowing that every moment counted in the days to come. The path ahead would be fraught with peril, with trials that would test us to our very limits but I refused to falter, drawing strength from the unwavering resolve that burned within me like a beacon in the night.

However, the seeds of doubt had already been sown and unrest started to spread through the room, the whispers growing louder until it turned into a full blown protest.

One by one, they voiced their grievances, their voices carrying the weight of betrayal. "We thought you would lead us with wisdom and diplomacy," a wolf in his mid two hundred’s said, his eyes dark with disappointment. "But instead, you've dragged us into conflict, pitting us against our own kind."

I listened, the weight of their accusations settling heavily upon my shoulders. Each word was a dagger to my heart, a painful reminder of the responsibility I bore as their leader. "I followed you because I believed in your vision," a young woman spoke up, her voice trembling with emotion.

"I thought you would be different, that you would lead us to a better future, without wars and conflicts. But now... now I don't know what to believe anymore."

I stood before my pack, feeling the weight of their accusing gazes bearing down on me. The tension in the air was palpable, charged with the electricity of uncertainty and mistrust. They believed that I was the cause of the wars brewing on our borders, that my actions had drawn the attention of rival Alphas and brought conflict upon us. But they couldn't have been more wrong.

Straightening my spine, I met their eyes with a steady gaze, my voice firm as I addressed them. "Listen up, all of you," I began, my tone cutting through the murmurs like a blade through the silence.

"If any of you believe that I am the reason for the wars threatening our pack, then you are free to leave this instant."

A murmur of surprise rippled through the crowd, eyes widening in shock at my bold proclamation. But I didn't falter. I had made up my mind long ago that I wouldn't let anyone question my leadership without consequence.

"I won't tolerate doubt and mistrust among us," I continued, my voice rising with conviction. "If you think I'm leading us astray, then go. Live as rogues or form your own pack, but don't expect to stay here and undermine my authority."

Some shifted uncomfortably, exchanging uneasy glances with their fellow packmates. But I held their gaze, unyielding in my resolve. I knew that my words would shake the foundation of our pack, but it was a necessary shake-up. The only reason rival Alphas dared to encroach upon our territory was because of the new recruits who had joined us, drawn by their own free will.

"War will occur as long as ambition and greed exist," I declared, my voice resonating with a fierce determination. "And those Alphas who covet our land and our pack won't stop at just one confrontation. They'll keep coming, fueled by their own desires for power and dominance."

“If you think I’m the root cause, you can leave right now and no one will stop you. But are you sure you’re safe outside the pack borders? Are you really sure that once you leave and form a pack of your own, the Alphas next target won’t be your own pack? After all, it was you who left your oppressive Alphas to be in my pack, because you yourself could no longer tolerate their tyranny.”

Silence hung heavy in the air, the weight of my words sinking in among my packmates. Some looked conflicted, torn between loyalty to me and their own doubts. But I stood unwavering, waiting for their response.

Finally, a voice broke the silence, tentative but resolute. "I stand with you, Alpha Mink," one of my trusted patrol guards declared, stepping forward with a determined glint in their eyes. "Whatever challenges come our way, we'll face them together."

A ripple of agreement echoed through the crowd, voices rising in solidarity as they pledged their loyalty to me and our pack. Relief flooded through me, tempered by the knowledge that our unity would be tested in the trials to come but I was ready to face whatever lay ahead, with my pack by my side.

“Are you sure you can even lead us to victory?”

A sudden voice came from the back, and the crowd parted to show me two young men, strong in their own right, stepping forwards with their arrogance rippling off of them in waves.

“What do you mean?” I narrowed my eyes at them, waiting to hear what they had to say.

“You’re a mere woman, you know nothing about warcraft. How can you lead us to victory?” He continued in his arrogance, his aggressive nature shining through. “If we are going to war, then this pack needs an able Alpha to lead them. And to us…it doesn’t seem like you fit that role.”

There's murmuring among the pack, uncertainty mingled with determination. Some nod in agreement, while others look apprehensive, their eyes darting around as if searching for a way out.

I stand my ground, meeting their challenging stares with unwavering resolve. “And you think you can do a better job than me? Are you trying to challenge your Alpha?”

“Yes, we are.” The second male replied, coming up to stand beside his friend. “We challenge you to a one-on-one battle, Alpha Mikalya. Show us you have what it takes, or step down from leadership.”

My blood boiled in my veins as anger made me see red. How dare they? They come into my pack seeking shelter and now they think they have some kind of upper hand.

Before I can respond, before I can defend my position, Abhay steps in unexpectedly. “Alpha Mikalya doesn’t need to fight. I will fight in her place.”
