Chapter 53: Chapter 53

Mink’s P.O.V

As Abhay and I stood in front of the tranquil Jharna on this quiet evening, the sound of water cascading down the rocks filled the air, creating a serene atmosphere around us. The light of the rising sun painted the sky in hues of orange and pink, casting a warm glow over the landscape. It was one of those rare moments of peace amidst the chaos that had engulfed our lives lately.

Abhay took a sip of his beer, his expression thoughtful as he gazed out at the flowing water. I watched him for a moment, envying his ability to find solace in something as simple as a drink.

At that moment, I wished I could join him, to let go of all the worries and fears that had been weighing heavily on my mind since last afternoon.

"I envy you, Abhay," I confessed, my voice barely above a whisper. "I wish I could drink too, just so I could forget everything that happened today."

Abhay turned to look at me, his eyes reflecting understanding mixed with a hint of concern.

"Mink, you know that's not the solution," he said gently, his voice tinged with a sense of caution. "Drinking won't make your problems disappear. If anything, it'll only make them worse. Besides, you’re pregnant. It’s harmful for the baby."

I nodded, knowing deep down that he was right. But in that moment, the allure of oblivion seemed almost irresistible.

"I know," I replied, my voice tinged with resignation. "But sometimes, I just wish I could escape, even if it's just for a little while."

Abhay reached out and placed a comforting hand on my shoulder, his touch warm and reassuring. "I understand, Mink. We're all struggling to deal with everything that's been happening lately," he said softly.

"But you have to remember that you're stronger than you think. You've faced challenges before, and you've always come out on top."

I smiled weakly, grateful for his words of encouragement. "Thanks, Abhay. I needed to hear that," I said, feeling a flicker of hope ignite within me. "I just hope I can live up to everyone's expectations."

Abhay squeezed my shoulder gently, his expression earnest. "You already have, Mink. Today's events may have made things up, but it's also shown the wolves that you're not to be underestimated," he said, his voice filled with conviction. "They may be wary of you now, but that's only because they know you're a force to be reckoned with."

I laughed softly, the tension easing from my shoulders. "Maybe one day, Abhay they will think of me as a friend, a sister or a family, rather than a force to be reckoned with. But for now, let's just enjoy the peace and quiet," I said, turning my gaze back to the Jharna. "It's moments like these that make all the struggles worth it."

And as we stood there together, watching the sun rise from the horizon, I felt an odd sense of peace settling within me. It had been a rough day yesterday, with one complication after another hitting us in the most unexpected ways imaginable. But now that my pack was once again in order and training was about to begin, I felt relieved that we had a semblance of peace going on, even if it was the calm before the storm.

"Mink," he began again, his voice steady, "the wolves need to know their place. They cannot question your authority. You must assert yourself firmly, and sometimes it’s better to be an Alpha than family."

“I understand, Abhay," I replied, my voice soft yet resolute. "But I don't want to rule through fear and force. I want to lead with compassion, with understanding."

Abhay's expression remained unchanged, his eyes searching mine. "Compassion has its place, Mink," he said firmly, his tone unwavering.

"But sometimes, our hearts can limit us in times of need. We must balance our emotions with strength and determination. That is what commands respect."

I sighed, running a hand through my hair in frustration. "I know," I murmured, my voice tinged with weariness. "But I can't abandon who I am, Abhay. I won't become like the other Alphas, ruling through fear and intimidation."

Abhay regarded me for a moment, his expression unreadable. Then, with a nod, he stepped closer, his gaze unwavering. "No one is asking you to become like them, Mink," he said gently.

"But sometimes, to protect our pack, we must make difficult decisions. And that requires both the strength of our hearts and the strength of our will."

His words hung in the air between us, heavy with implication. I knew he was right, in a way. But it was hard to accept, to reconcile my desire for a compassionate rule with the harsh realities of pack dynamics.

"I'll do my best, Abhay," I said finally, meeting his gaze with determination. "But I won't compromise who I am. I'll lead with my heart, even if it means facing challenges along the way."

Abhay's expression softened slightly, a hint of understanding in his eyes. "That's all anyone can ask, Mink," he said quietly.

"You did something stupid today, Abhay," I blurted out, unable to keep it inside any longer. His eyebrows furrowed in confusion as he listened intently, waiting for me to continue.

"You shouldn't have tried to shield me from that attack. I know you were just trying to protect me, but I can handle myself. I don't want you putting yourself in danger for me." I scolded, even though my heart had leapt into my throat when I had seen him cover for me. “You could’ve been seriously hurt, or worse”

I shook my head, not wanting to think about the consequences of his actions. If I hadn't managed to stop everyone on time, I don’t know what would’ve happened next.

Abhay's expression softened as he reached out for me. He pulled me into a tight hug, his arms enveloping me in warmth and safety. "I promise, Mink, I'll try to be more careful," he said softly, his voice barely above a whisper.

"But hey, according to my dreams, my demise will be near the Jharna, not inside the packhouse. So, I think we're both safe for now."

I couldn't help but roll my eyes at his attempt at humor, but it did manage to ease some of the tension that had been building inside me. "Yeah, yeah, I know," I replied, trying to sound annoyed but failing miserably. His dreams did scare me, but to this point, we both had no idea what it meant, or what it was trying to tell us.

"But seriously, Abhay, you can't keep risking your life for me like that. I don't know what I'd do if anything happened to you."

“How about naming this Jharna after me then?” He joked, looking out at the rising sun. “Maybe it’s the alcohol or maybe it’s the fact that we haven’t slept for the last twenty hours or so…but this Jharna needs a name. Maybe naming it after me won’t be so bad, no?”

“Abhay!” I warned, and he only burst out laughing.

I couldn't help but chuckle at his attempt to reassure me, even if it was a bit morbid. "Well, let's hope your dreams are wrong for once," I said, snuggling closer to him. "I don't know what I'd do without you, Abhay."

"Hey, you won't have to find out," he replied, squeezing me tighter. "I'll always be here for you, no matter what." He then reached down to pat my swelling bump. “You and my princess.”

“Princess?” I glanced up at him, a smile playing on my lips, but inside, my mind raced with questions. How did he know it was a girl? Had he been seeing this in his dream as well?

Before I could voice my thoughts, he turned to me, his eyes sparkling with an unspoken joy. "I have a hunch, Mink," he said, his hand resting gently on my stomach. "I just feel it deep down inside, like a gut instinct. We’re going to have a baby girl…or at least that’s what my intrusion tells me."

His words caught me off guard, and for a moment, I was at a loss for words. But as I looked into his eyes, I saw something familiar there - a determination, a belief that transcended logic. And suddenly, I understood. Abhay didn't need proof or certainty; he simply believed with all his heart.

"Did you want a baby girl?" I murmured, my voice barely above a whisper. The warmth of his touch sent shivers down my spine, and I found myself leaning into him, seeking solace in his embrace.

“Yes.” He chuckled softly, his fingers tracing patterns on my skin. "I wanted a baby girl who was just as strong and gorgeous as her mother. I can’t wait for our baby to be born, Mink. But regardless, I love her already, so much that it’s hard to describe."

His words filled me with a sense of wonder, a profound gratitude for the man I was lucky enough to call my mate. In that moment, as we stood in front of the waterfall, I felt an overwhelming sense of peace wash over me. Whatever challenges lay ahead, I knew we would face them together, as a family.

And so, I rested my head on his shoulder, closing my eyes as I savored the feeling of his arms around me. For a brief moment, time seemed to stand still, the world fading away as we shared a moment of pure bliss. Little did we know, this fleeting moment of tranquility would soon be shattered by the chaos that awaited us. But for now, all that mattered was the love we shared, and the promise of a future filled with endless possibilities.
