Chapter 35: Chapter 35
Mink’s P.O.V
As I sat across from Ruksaar, her words hung in the air like a heavy mist. I was trying to bare my insecurities, my mind filled with worries and doubts, and now she was asking me if that was all my concerns amounted to.
It was a casual question, one that caught me off guard, considering the weight of the issues I had brought to attention. Ruksaar, with her poised demeanor and unwavering strength, had always been the epitome of a beta - someone I admired and respected. But her nonchalant response left me reeling, unsure of how to proceed.
"Why, yes," I replied hesitantly, taken aback by her question. "They are pressing concerns, Ruksaar."
Ruksaar leaned back in her chair, studying me with a keen gaze. "And do you think those concerns are truly as significant as you make them out to be?"
"Yes," I admitted, feeling a pang of self-doubt creeping in. "I had lived with the weight of my guilt all my life, Ruksaar, you’re a witness to that. How can you dismiss my worries so casually?"
Ruksaar nodded thoughtfully, her expression softening with understanding. "I understand that you carried that guilt for so long, Mink but sometimes, we get so caught up in our own worries that we lose sight of the bigger picture. Perhaps what you need is a shift in perspective."
I listened intently as she spoke, her words resonating with a sense of wisdom born from experience. She spoke with a mix of sorrow and understanding, her voice carrying the weight of years of suppressed emotions. I couldn't help but feel a pang of guilt as she recounted the events that led to my drastic actions.
"You have to understand, Mink," Ruksaar began, her eyes fixed on mine, "when you killed Rafael and set fire to the pack, it wasn't out of malice or cruelty. It was out of desperation, a last resort born from a place of profound sorrow and anguish."
I nodded slowly, absorbing her words. It was true; I hadn't acted out of hatred or vengeance, but out of a desperate need to protect what little remained of our shattered pack.
"When you took that drastic step," Ruksaar continued, her voice softening with empathy, "you were just a child, barely fourteen years old. What else could we have expected from you? You had lived your entire life in hiding, shielded from the atrocities of our cruel Alpha and then... to witness your own parents being burned alive before your eyes..."
Her words trailed off, the weight of the memory hanging heavy in the air.
"I'm not excusing your actions," Ruksaar clarified, her tone firm, "but I can't help but understand the desperation that drove you to such extremes. You could have chosen a different path, yes, but at that moment, with your world crumbling around you, what other choice did you have?"
I sat in silence, grappling with the complexity of it all. The lines between victim and perpetrator blurred in the face of such cruelty and injustice.
"We may never fully understand the depths of your pain," Ruksaar murmured, her gaze distant as she stared into the flickering flames of the fireplace, "but we can't let it consume us. We have to find a way to heal, to rebuild what was lost."
"If you were truly heartless, Mink," Ruksaar said, her voice low but unwavering, "you wouldn't have risked your life to save me from that burning village. You wouldn't have gone back into the flames, ignoring the danger to yourself, just to make sure I made it out alive."
I swallowed hard, memories of that night flooding back with painful clarity. The heat, the chaos, the screams echoing in my ears as I searched desperately for any sign of Ruksaar amidst the inferno and then, finally, finding her in the jaws of the very tyrant that I had hoped to eliminate.
"But you did," Ruksaar continued, her gaze never wavering from mine. "And not only that, you went back after the fire died down. You insisted on giving every single person a proper burial in the sand, making sure that no one would be forgotten, no matter how small or insignificant their life may have seemed to others."
Ruksaar seemed to sense my inner turmoil, reaching across the space between us to gently grasp my hand in hers. "Mink," she said softly, her voice a soothing balm to my troubled mind, "those scars you carry in your heart are a testament to your compassion, your humanity. They are what make you strong, what make you the kind of leader our people need."
I looked into her eyes, seeing the unwavering faith and trust shining there, and felt a surge of determination rising within me. Ruksaar was right. If I had truly been heartless, I wouldn't have risked everything to save her. I wouldn't have fought tooth and nail to ensure that no one would be forgotten, that their memories would live on even as their bodies turned to dust.
"Mikalya," Kashmira’s soft voice broke through the tense atmosphere, drawing our attention to her, "there's something I need to tell you."
She settled down beside me, hesitating a bit before she took a deep breath and looked into my eyes. “I ran away from my pack, from my Alpha Mate, to protect my son.”
I frowned, wonder what could have possibly caused a woman like Kashmira, who had the position of Luna, to leave everything behind. And why would anyone want to harm the future heir of the pack?
“You’re probably wondering why anyone would harm Kushal, right?” She gave a sad smile, her eyes reflecting her inner turmoil. “Because he is the Alpha’s son after all. But that is just the problem. His own father wanted to end his life, because he wasn’t born with Alpha blood. Alpha Arsalan…my mate…wanted him gone, all traces of him removed from existence so that no one would ever associate a weak son like Kushal to a powerful Alpha like him.”
Dread settled in the pit of my stomach as I finally began to realize the true nature of betrayal Kashmira must have faced at the hands of her own mate…the father of her child. That too at such a young age.
“I thought my packmates would help, but they too agreed that a child as weak as him must not be allowed to live.” Her voice trembled, her eyes glistening with unshed tears. “But I’m his mother! How could I sit back and let someone take away my child, even if that person was my mate? So I fled…and that’s when I found you…or rather, you found me.”
She reached out her hand to touch mine, unwavering devotion in her eyes. “You were the first person I knew who never commented on my son being weak. You were the first person to offer me shelter and genuine care. That’s why, my wolf has chosen you as it’s Alpha. I will follow you no matter what hardships lay in our path and I will make sure you never regret giving me shelter. I will work hard in this pack. And I will become someone you can count on.”
Her words struck a chord within me, a profound sense of gratitude and responsibility washing over me. "Kashmira," I replied, my voice soft but resolute, "your loyalty means everything to me. But you don't have to prove yourself like that. Your unwavering dedication is more than enough."
She smiled, a genuine expression of appreciation spreading across her face. "Thank you, Mink. I just wanted you to know how much your kindness has meant to me. You've given me a sense of belonging I never thought possible. When you fought with the Falcons, Mink, you protected us all.”
And finally, Ruksaar turned to me once again, her eyes shining with unspoken emotions. "I need you to know that my loyalty to you runs deeper than words can express. If it ever comes to a test, if I have to walk through fire to prove it, I will. I want you to understand that I have chosen you as my Alpha, and I will stand by you for eternity."
Their words struck a chord deep within me, resonating with the weight of responsibility and trust. To have someone pledge their loyalty so wholeheartedly was both humbling and empowering. I felt a surge of gratitude towards Kashmira and Ruksaar, towards all those who stood by me in solidarity.
Beside me, Abhay, steadfast and unwavering, interjected with a touch of sincerity in his voice. "I may not fully understand the intricacies of your world, Mink," he began, his gaze unwavering as he took my hand in his.
"But I am willing to learn. I'm here to support you, to stand by your side, for as long as I live."
In that moment, surrounded by allies old and new, I felt a surge of gratitude and determination wash over me. With them and the rest of my pack at my side, I knew that together, we could overcome any challenge that lay ahead.
And in that moment, something shifted inside me, my wolf coming to life in a way that I had never experienced before. I felt a surge of electricity coursing through my veins, and those who held my hand must have felt it too, because shocked gasps escaped their lips.
But it wasn’t the kind of effect that was meant to hurt…and suddenly…I felt the presence of more mind joining mine, creating a web of mental connections that were painted in vivid hues of the rainbow, each with a distinguishable uniqueness that I couldn’t ignore.
Now, I could feel Kashmira as well Kushal, connected to me via that mental link and then there was Abhay…a web of gold connecting to my mind. The mating bond pulsed between us, rich and strong and I even though I couldn’t communicate with him like I could with other wolves, his emotions were strong and overwhelming, making me aware of exactly what he felt.
This was it…this was me accepting who I truly was, embracing my nature once and forever.
This…was me becoming the first Female Alpha in existence.
