Chapter 11: Chapter 11
It’d been two days since they arrived at Lakewood. It was Sunday morning around 7am, Jasper had awoken; he didn't know why because, it was very unusual for him to awake by this time of the morning.
He got up from the bed wearing only his briefs and the fluffy catty slippers that Mrs. Baldwin gifted him two months ago. Entering the bathroom, he opened the cabinet and took out his brush and toothpaste. Closing the cabinet, he swore seeing a lady behind him in the mirror.
Again he opened the cabinet and he saw the lady once more, but this time he took a closer look at her.
She looked almost normal except that her skin was too pale. He closed the cabinet again and was about to open it for a third look.
"Hey babes, good morning." Said the voice.
"Morning babes." He replied nonchalantly, brushing his teeth ignoring his tone.
"Why looking like you’ve seen a ghost?" She asked.
"That’s because I saw one right where you're standing," he mumbled incoherently
"What did you say?" She asked.
"Nothing babes, I'll be right back, I'm going for a walk" He answered.
And that said, he walked away leaving Ruth stunned, and she brushed it off thinking he woke up at the wrong side of the bed.
He got dressed as fast as he could and left the house. Going out through the back, something keeps telling him that this cabin was creepy. Since the night they had arrived and the breeze that made the hairs on skin stand had he seen an old lady whilst he was in the kitchen with Patrick?
He let his mind wander and still he could not find anything to hold against the cabin. He stopped to look at the signboard, the arrow point left to the lake, as he followed the road by his calculation. It was just a five minutes walk from that path and fifteen minutes from the house.
Arriving at the lake he sat at the edge. Playful he picked the pebbles, throwing them into the river. Behind him he felt a presence; he looked back and saw no one, but felt a hand on his thigh, the eerie feeling made him to scream and stood up. It scared him.
"Hey I'm Elena... Elena Martins" The person said.
Jasper asked, "Who are you and why do you follow me? You scare the shit outta me"
"I'm sorry, she smiled. Ok! I'll reply what you're thinking if you'll take a seat beside me" She said.
"How do you know what I'm thinking?" He asked.
"Well you'd know real soon, you saw me in the bathroom today" She said.
"It was you, but it looked blurry," he said.
"That’s because you didn't clean the mirror," she said twirling her hairs with her fingers.
"Wait, you're a ghost." Jasper asked, moving an inch away from her.
Her face fell and her smile dropped, "Yeah, my death was a mistake so was my birth, everything about me is a mistake except the fact that helping you and your friends won't be a mistake"
"I don't understand you," Jasper said as his heart raced; he could have turned away from her, but it was as if she was explaining what he was curious about.
"Ok Jasper, that cabin isn't a normal like every other cabins you must have visited, well if you ever stayed in one!” She said as she shrugs.
“There's a book y'all shouldn't come across, y’all should never read it, if you can get it before your friends, y'all would be safe and never come back to the cabin, right now, the other ghosts wouldn't let you rest, especially my mother." She said as she brushed a strand of her hair away.
Jasper tried to wrap his mind around all she'd said, he wanted to ask why he was the only one seeing her and why he saw her in his dreams.
“Why should that be?” He asked.
The worse part of it all was how he would tell his friends. He wiped the sweats forming on his forehead, and closed his eyes for a second; on opening the eyes she was gone.
A chill breeze overtook him, and he quickly got up to run all the way back to the house, bursting through the front door; he stopped to catch his breath.
Ivan handed him a bottle of water, whilst a furious Ruth stared him, after he had gulped the water.
Ruth was the first to talk, "You've been gone for an hour and half, where the hell have you been? "
"I was at the lake was all he said to his friends, as he made his way upstairs to his room.” And said nothing further.
His action shocked them, as they looked at one another.
“What’s wrong with Jasper" Danni asked biting gum on her lips.
Ruth answered heaving a sigh.
"I don't know. I'll go talk to him" Ezekiel offered.
"Nah, let me go, I'm his girlfriend" She said.
She left her friends in the living room, taking the stairs two at a time; she rushed along, and she heard footsteps behind her.
Danni is that you? There was no reply.
Moving forward she took two steps, and heard the footsteps again.
"Stacie, guys, stops it.” She screamed louder, but no one could hear her, then she saw a hand walking on the wall. Another steps forward she felt a hand lunged and grabbed her by the neck. The hallway closed in on her, as she got claustrophobic out of fear, and passed out!
Thirty minutes had passed, no sign of Ruth nor Jasper, no voices were heard or anything. I would go upstairs to take a nap, Stacie said standing up...
"Ah!" Stacie screamed.
Rushing back downstairs whilst the rest pushed to go up to figure out what happened. Stacie couldn't talk instead she beckoned her brother to hurry up, pointing to the floor.
"Ruth, Ruth, Ruth, " Ezekiel called, placing his head on her chest to feel if she was breathing.
"Here, give her CPR" Patrick suggested.
Ezekiel was about to do so when she woke up.
"Why am I on the floor, what happened?” She asked.
