Chapter 9: Chapter 9
Tommy, Iris, and Shane returned to the base, and they have been awaited by several Hunters who had been waiting for them there. Shane immediately took them to the lab for treatment while waiting for Eva to return.
Inside the lab, Iris could see various kinds of medicines and she assumed this place is the private clinic of the Hunters. Shane then directed her to sit on a chair.
"Are you a licensed doctor? I don't want any malpractice to happen to me." Iris asked directly revealing her mind.
Shane just smiled as she took some equipment and medicine towards her.
"I'm not a doctor, I'm just a scientist. If you want to see my scientist license, I'm fine to show it to you." Shane's words made her roll her eyes lazily.
She looked around the white room that looked exactly like the laboratory she used to see in the movies. She glanced at Tommy who was standing in the medicine cabinet with furrowed brows.
"Is he okay? He crashed into the wall twice while wrestling with the demon earlier." Shane also glanced at him.
"Don't worry about him. He can still walk normally even though he broke one leg." Iris glared as she turned quickly to him.
"Is that true?" She asked which immediately made Tommy chuckle a little.
"How old are you, Iris? You're so easy to fool." Tommy said sitting near her chair. Iris sighed as she massaged her temples like someone was in a lot of trouble.
"I'm getting too open to you guys because I'm going against my logic here. First, you guys don't say anything that they have superpowers like the Hulk, he moves very fast like Ezra Miller. How can I calm down and laugh hahaha like you guys? I think I can go crazy slowly."
Shane turned to Tommy with furrowed brows. "Who is Ezra Miller?" She asked confused. Tommy looked back at her with an unconvinced expression.
"Artists? I think the characters of superheroes."
"Ah!" Shane nodded a few times trying to understand Iris was a movie buff.
Iris grimaced as Shane started sewing the wound on her palm after she had injected the low dose of anesthetic. Her mind kept replaying what had happened incessantly.
Why are demons so mean to humans? Just because humans don't have superpowers like them, they can be arbitrary and think humans are worthless slaves.
Shane glanced at her a few times. She knew how she felt right now because it all happened too suddenly.
"I work as a researcher as well as a doctor, coach, and psychiatrist here. You can tell me if you have a problem that is difficult for you to solve." Shane's words slightly stole her attention.
"I'm sorry Shane, but I want to be alone now." Said Iris who immediately stood up and left after Shane finished treating her. Tommy, who was furious with her, wanted to chase after her, but Shane held him back to let her think.
For a long time, Iris was alone in the garden behind the headquarters, lost in thought about everything. Starting from her blood that can kill demons, Devil Hunter, and also Jonathan.
"Have you thought enough?"
Iris turned and found Eva who was standing against the wall while folding her arms in front of her chest. Iris nodded weakly. Eva walked over to her and stood right beside her.
"I've already arranged for your parents' funerals. If you want to visit, I'll drop you off tomorrow morning." Iris could still smile when she heard the news that her parents had been buried.
"Thank you." She said powerlessly. Eva sat beside her looking up at the sky.
"What are your plans now? Your apartment isn't safe anymore if you want to go back there." Eva said reminding her if she was thinking of returning.
"You know? I don't know what to do because the demon that killed my parents is also dead. I have no ambition other than to survive."
Eva understood the emptiness she felt.
"I have one big ambition that I don't know when it will come true." Iris turned and looked at her as if she could read what her ambition was.
"Killing all the demons on earth?" She asked which immediately made her laugh.
"Yes. The devil was the beginning of all my family and friends being killed. I don't mind if I have to die silly being killed at the hands of the devil. As long as all my friends are safe from them." Eva turned her head when she felt someone else coming.
"But if you want everyone to be safe, then you also have to survive first and think of ways to escape or fight." Said Tommy who followed Eva to the back garden. Iris laughed at their ramblings.
"I'm not like you guys. Have adequate martial arts skills and weapons. And that earlier... that was the first time I shot someone with a gun... I-I meant to kill him then."
Eva was silent this time. Iris has a very kind heart. She may seem obnoxious at first, but she has a much bigger conscience than anyone she's ever met.
She was even afraid of hurting them even though it was clear that the demon she had killed was the one who killed her parents.
"We will train you until you become like us. Iris, join our team." Eva said with a serious expression.
She was sure with her hunch that she might bring about a big change in their team. Iris herself shook her head in disbelief.
"I'm afraid I'll just be a burden on your team."
"There is nothing like that. Those with special blood like us can only be counted on the fingers. And we are the main target of the demons. If we don't help and protect each other, no one will survive. We need to be united." Tommy replied giving her slightly some motivation.
Iris seemed to think again. She doesn't want any more sadistic murders by the devil-like what happened to her parents. She looked at Eva and Tommy in turn before she gave a small smile.
"First, I need a place to stay."
Eva immediately extended her hand to shake hands with her.
"Welcome to the Devil Hunter organization, Iris."
After she joined Devil Hunter, she was immediately trained by Shane and introduced to the members in the headquarters.
"Devils, have various kinds of powers. They can change appearance, move as fast as lightning, have unlimited power, and can imitate human form one hundred percent similar." Shane explained.
Tommy, who is off work due to an injury, attends Iris' class in the lab with Shane. Iris clenched her fists as she remembered Jonathan doing that yesterday.
"Imitating a human form one hundred percent is very troublesome. What if one of us turns out to be a demon?" Iris started to look at Tommy with a wary look.
"What? I'm human!" He said didn't accept it. Shane shook her head with a small chuckle.
"They can indeed imitate one hundred percent, but in terms of nature and character, they will not be able to," Shane explained again and Iris nodded in understanding. "The only way to fight this demon is to understand the nature and character of other Hunters."
Iris thought of doing an impromptu interview to understand each member there.
"Then, do demons eat humans?" She asked again. Shane immediately snapped her fingers excitedly.
"Good question!"
