Chapter 13: Chapter 13

Chapter Thirteen: Trapped in Darkness

Kyle

I could feel her presence in the room and her sweet-smelling perfume lingering in the air. Wait, where am I? I asked myself. Laying in my darkness, everything that happened earlier suddenly came flooding back to my memory. I was running after Nyla to explain that she totally misread the situation when she had caught me in bed with a woman whose name I don't even remember. I had missed the first step because I was shocked and in a hurry to get to her and fell down the stairs, and then my whole world was suddenly overtaken by darkness.

But remembering still didn't tell me where I was. I badly wanted to pry open my eyes to see her pretty face, but I couldn't, they were glued shut. I was trapped in my own darkness and it was maddening, not being able to do anything. I could still hear the noises around me, but they sounded very far away and disoriented. I could hear her opening a drawer and shuffling through the contents. What was she looking for? I asked myself, a few seconds later I could hear her sobbing. Why was she crying?

“Oh Nyla,” I really wanted to say out loud, but I couldn't something was blocking my throat so I couldn't talk. It was a tube and it was blocking my airway. Tube? That meant that I'm in the hospital. Was my condition that serious that I ended up in here? I swear Nyla would be the death of me. Literally. A few minutes had passed before the sobbing stopped, and I could feel something wet being placed in my hand, followed by a kiss on my cheek and the words “I love you” and “I'll miss you” being whispered in my ears.

She loves me! I wanted to scream and shout, but my circumstances limited those actions. I'm so happy right now, but all that happiness was suddenly replaced with confusion. What did she mean by she'll miss me, was Nyla leaving me? How could she do this to me? Seeing my state, how could she leave me like this?

“Nyla,” I screamed, but no words came out of my mouth. All I could hear was her name being echoed in my head. My heart was beating erratically and my body was shaking uncontrollably. I could hear a lot of machines going off.

“Doctor Rollins, someone please call Doctor Rollins,” I heard a female voice shout.

“Doctor Rollins, please report to room 102,” a loud voice spoke.

“What's the stat report?” I heard a voice boom a few seconds later. That must be Doctor Rollins.

“Patient had gone into shock, we need to calm him down before his heart rate speeds up any faster and stops beating.”

“Doctor! Doctor! We are losing him,” I heard a female voice call out. I could feel the defibrillator pressed on my chest before darkness overtook me again.

Consumed in my darkness, I was thinking about what my mom had said and she was right I was just like my father. I was a coward and a weak bastard who couldn’t do one thing, protect and love her. I had let her slip right through my fingers because of what I had said to her earlier and now by my foolish actions. I was doing the same thing that my dad had done to my mom, leaving her to care for me and herself.

It was twenty-three years ago when my dad had left me and my mom to be with someone else. He had left us to fend for ourselves and he didn’t care if we had survived or not. My father was a very wealthy man when he had divorced my mom for his secretary, she had been left with nothing because she had signed a prenuptial agreement.

“You need to leave,” I heard his cold voice came out. My mother stood there with a shock expression on her face while tears were falling from her eyes.

“Are you deaf? You need to leave now!” He shouted at her, I didn’t think his voice could get colder than the Antarctic but it did and it seemed that the ice from his voice had frozen her in her spot. She looked terrified; it was like she was paralyzed, unable to move. With anger in his eyes, he grabbed her by her hair and dragged her across the floor until she was outside the door. Pushing her, he walked back inside then closed the door in her face. I could see the smug look his secretary had on her face while everything was transpiring.

“I need my son,” my mother’s voiced ranged out while she banged on the door.

“Momma” I screamed, “I need my mother.”

Looking at me and then at the door, he stalked over towards me before he lifted me by my shirt and opened the door, and pushed me in her arms before closing the door shut. Holding me tight, she sobbed against my small shoulders. I didn’t know how long we stood there; it could have been minutes or hours. Finally taking up her head from my shoulders, she looked me deep in the eyes before saying. “Son, things are going to change, we are not rich anymore and we won’t live in this huge mansion anymore with maids and butlers. Please keep your head up and work hard in school so you could buy a house that is huge than this one, or even houses and cars, and always treat your wife or girlfriend like a queen. Don’t make the same mistake your dad did.” With those words, she kissed me on my forehead before taking my small hands into hers. Walking off his property, I looked back. Knowing that this is the last time I will ever set foot on his property again, I made a vow to be a better man than my father and to take my mom’s advice. I was going to be a better man than he was and I knew that one day, I will surely destroy him.

My mom had gotten a small apartment after we had been kicked out, and I would watch her struggle every day. She had eventually gotten on her feet and had gotten a job as an accountant at a small firm. I have witnessed her struggle until she had eventually gotten married to a millionaire. I had vowed to myself that when I grew up I would be just as successful as the bastard who ruined me and my mother’s lives and that I would not be like him. I would not turn my back on the woman that I will fall in love with.

Today I proved to do the opposite; I have proven to myself that I have been just as weak and foolish as my dad. Right here and now, consumed in my darkness I am making a vow to make things right with Nyla. That’s if I make it out alive.
