Chapter 14: Chapter 14
Chapter Fourteen: Can’t Let Go
Nyla
I had exited his room and was about to turn the corner when I heard a voice coming from the speaker propped on the wall nearby. “Doctor Rollins, please report to room 102.” Wasn't that Kyle's room? what the hell had happened to him, I asked myself? Spinning on my heel, I sprinted to his room where I saw nurses and a man dressed in a white doctor's coat standing over him. Was he dead? Getting hysterical, I tried to run inside his room, but I was stopped by a nurse.
“Ma’am, you can't enter! I am sorry. Please wait outside, as soon as we get an update we will report back to you.”
“What's wrong with him?” I heard a worried voice inquired behind me. “We had overheard that a doctor was needed in the room my brother was in.”
Turning around, I saw it was his mother and sister and they were each holding a coffee cup. “He has gone into shock, am not sure what brought it on. I think it had something to do with this young lady,” the nurse continued while pointing a finger at me.
“What do you mean?” I asked, surprised by her accusation.
“I was coming to check on the patient when I saw you exiting the room. Your back was turned to me because you were walking in the opposite direction. When I had entered his room, I saw that he was going into shock, so I'm guessing it was something you said or did.” She explained.
“What did you do to my son?” His mom screamed at me.
“Nothing, I swear; I didn't do anything. I just told him that I love him and that I'll miss him” I fired back.
“Then that must have brought on the shock, although he was unconscious, he still was aware of his surroundings and when you said those words, it might have triggered something that had set it off.” The nurse calmly explained.
“You bitch, you almost killed my son,” his mom said while she lunged forward to attack me, but was stopped by her daughter who was holding her back. “I know you’re not right for him, you should leave now!”
In my peripheral vision, I could see the nurse slowly backing away. Going inside the room, she closed the door behind her. She had left us in the hall outside Kyle's room to work out our differences. I guess she didn’t want to be caught up in our drama.
“I am not leaving! Look what it had caused the first time I almost walked away and never look back.” I fired back through gritted teeth while tears were streaming down my face in a rapid motion.
“Fine, suit your fucking self,” she retorted, still blazing with anger. I could feel his sister's eyes boring through me during the entire ordeal.
Looking at her, she gave me a look of sympathy and a kind smile before she took her mother's hand and led her to the waiting room. Breathing air into my lungs, I opened the door to Kyle's room and I saw the doctor using the defibrillator on Kyle's chest while shouting “clear.”
I know I shouldn't be in here, but I didn’t care. I was the reason why Kyle was in the situation and I was hell-bent on making things right. I had almost killed him when I uttered those words to him earlier when I thought he was knocked out cold, so I have to try to get him back. I have to save his life. If I had known that he could’ve heard me, I would have just kept my mouth shut and just leave the letter.
“Ma’am as I said before, you can't be in here,” the nurse who spoke to me earlier recited, as I stepped inside the room.
“If I was the reason why he is in this condition because I had left, maybe being back here in the room could somehow revive him back.” I reasoned.
“It's worth a shot,” Doctor Rollins muttered.
I could still hear the doctor and the nurses trying their hardest to revive him, but it was now all distant to me, all of it faded in the background. Completely zoning them out, I focused on the situation at hand. Trying to get my lover to wake up, so I could apologize profusely.
Walking to his bedside, I place his large hand which felt cold and limp inside mine.
“Please Kyle, if you can hear me, please wake up. I am so sorry for thinking that leaving you would make the situation better, I was wrong. Please, we can get through this just wake up,” I cried out. A few minutes had passed and the monitor still had a flat line. Crying, I lifted his hand towards my lips and kissed it before placing it over my heart.
“Doctor!” A nurse screamed, look at the monitor.
Everyone’s gaze shifted to the monitor after the nurse’s outburst and my heart did a happy flip. Showing on the screen, were the lines that had stopped now moving slowly but surely and the familiar beep could be heard which meant that he was reviving.
“You did it, you revived him. I will advise you to stay here and keep holding his hands and be by his side.” The nurse happily shouted.
“It seems this young man loves you and your presence in his life makes him very happy,” Doctor Rollins said, while gently patting me on the back.
Smiling politely at him, I gently shook my head before asking, “when is he leaving?”
“He will be discharged within a month,” he replied. Nodding my head, I thanked him.
“Nurse, I think it's time for us to take our leave,” he said after he looked Kyle over once more before walking out of the room followed closely by the nurses.
“Is he okay?” I heard his sister asked.
“Yes, he is. That young woman in there has a lot of impact on that young man's life. She did what we couldn't do. We almost lost hope, but she saved him.”
“Yeah, right,” his mother scoffed. “At least the bitch was useful and did something right for a change.” I could tell his mom didn't like me. I was really creating a bad image for myself, first the fight now this. I'm was really digging myself a grave that his mom wouldn't mind pushing me in.
When I first walked out of his room, I thought it was for the best if I did and didn't look back. I had badly wanted to let go, but I couldn't. I loved him and his child which was growing inside of me. We had created something together, and it was worth fighting for. I had almost created the worst mistake of my life, and I almost ended up losing him- the father of my child and the man I was in love with. It seemed like it was a sign that I shouldn't leave- when I heard the voice over the speaker telling the doctor to go to his room, I knew I had to come back.
I didn't know that I had such an impact on Kyle and I'm happy that I found out. I was and still hurt over what I had witnessed in his bedroom, but I had no right to be because I didn't know what happened and I didn't stick around to find out. Instead, I ran out on him and it almost cost him his life. Laying down beside him, I wrapped my hands around him and nuzzle my lips in the crook of his neck. Kissing him gently, I uttered the words ‘I love you’ and ‘I'm sorry in his ear.
I could have sworn I saw a small smile on his lips when I lifted my head to get a last glance at his face but I wasn’t sure because I was sleepy. It was early in the morning, around two am and I haven’t gotten any sleep since I left work. Laying back down, I settled down comfortably before I fell asleep.

“Nyla,” I heard Kyle's deep calling me in my sleep. Opening my eyes wide I saw him, lying on his side facing me. “I love you too,” he said out of the blue while smiling down at me.
“You heard me, didn't you?”
“Yes, I did,” he replied while giving me a toothy grin.
“You’re such a sneak,” I said, while I burst out laughing. Following suit, he started laughing as well before his face turned serious.
“We need to talk about this,” he said while holding up the paper that I had put in my hands earlier. “What's written on it?” He questioned.
I had totally forgotten to take the letter out of his hand.
