Chapter 15: Chapter 15

"C-Carter? What are you doing here?" I watched as he walked to my kitchen's pantry and got out the Frosted Flakes box.

"I just thought that you might want a ride to school," He replied whilst pouring milk into his bowl. Carter sat down next to me, immediately digging into his breakfast. If only he knew. I can't tell him that Shane was already here...Shane was just in the bathroom.

"N-no that's okay. I have my skateboard I'll be fine," I said, trying to make him leave. I set my coffee mug down on the counter and looked at him. He would kill me if I told him anything that happened yesterday, he would hate me for hanging out with Shane!

Oh, and Kaelyn don't forget the fact that you ditched with Shane. You never ditched with Carter when he asked you to.

"But, I don't want you to be late again. If you are then you'll get another detention and you're not the detention type,"Carter laughed. I rolled my eyes. "Oh and Kaelyn, whose car is in the driveway? It kind of looks like Shane Collin's car but, I know he wouldn't be here. After what he did to me... you would never betray me like that. You're still ignoring him right?"

Gosh, he sure knows how to make a girl feel guilty.

"Y-yeah," I lied. "Um... Michael just bought a new car... y'know, for show." I lied again. I'm lying to my best friend, something that I told myself I would never do. I was lied to by so many people when I was dating Ryder... all those fake friends. I heard a flush and Carter raised an eyebrow at me. "You should get going, you're going to be late." I tried pushing him out the door.

"Hey! I'm not done with my cereal!" Carter said.

"It's time for you to go," I tried pushing him out once more. He didn't budge. I was getting extremely frustrated.

"Why are you practically throwing me out of the house!" He exclaimed. I looked back and saw Shane walking into the kitchen, buckling his belt in the process. Shane looked up and I shook my head. He slowly backed out of the kitchen, thank god Carter didn't see him.

"I'm not, I just need you to leave," I opened up the front door, but Carter turned around before I could push him out.He put his arms out and held onto the door frame.

"You're not telling me why," He bent his head down so we were almost eye level. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Shane pop his head into the mudroom where Carter and I were standing. Carter glanced up and smirked.

Shit. Shit. Shit. Shit. Did he see Shane?

"Is there something you're not telling me, babe?" Carter whispered, his lips brushed against my ear. I froze. Why was he acting like this? Where did my sweet, funny, caring Carter go?

"Carter you really need to go, I'll see you at school," I tried pushing him out the door but he was too strong. He barely even moved.

"Not until you tell me why you're kicking me out," His lips were inches away from mine. I held my breath. I heard footsteps behind me and then arms were wrapping around my waist.

"Oh, so you lied to me? Wow, thank you Kaelyn, you're such a great friend! Is this why you're throwing me out?Because you and your boyfriend had sex last night and you didn't want me to know? You told me that you were still ignoring him! I thought that you would've listened to me, I told you that he was a no good player and that he'll just dump you. He'll probably abuse you too, he does it to everyone else," Carter yelled. Tears started rolling down my cheeks.

"That's not why! He's not my boyfriend and we didn't do anything!" My voice cracked. Shane squeezed my waist, in an effort to calm me down.

"And how do I know that's not another lie?" Carter snapped.

"Why are you acting like this?"

"Carter, it's time for you to leave," Shane let go of my waist and pushed me, gently, behind him.

"No." Carter replied. Shane clenched his fists.

"Excuse me?" Shane took a step towards Carter. I saw Carter flinch at the tone. I guess he's scared of Shane. "If I were you, I would leave as fast as I could; because 'player boy' over here will sure as hell like to abuse a shit head like you...again." He used the same tone... the same tone that scared me when he was talking to Ryder. Carter slowly backed out of the house, his eyes were locked on Shane's fists. Shane slammed the door causing me to jump.

I slid down the wall with my head in my hands. I feel so weak right now. Carter's never yelled at me like that. What has gotten into him? Suddenly he's acting as if he's the king of the world, like he owns everything and everyone.

"Hey, hey, don't cry." Shane's voice was back to normal. He sat down next to me, wrapping an arm around my shoulders.

"I'm a terrible person, I lied to my best friend!" I muttered. I leaned my head onto Shane's chest. He was warm and I just wanted to cuddle with him all day long.

"Beautiful, if you think you're the terrible person, you need to open your eyes a bit more. You're not a terrible person,if anyone is it's Carter. Please don't get mad at me for saying that, I know that he's your friend and all but, he shouldn't have jumped to conclusions like that," Shane's voice was calming me, how does he do that?

I wiped the tears off of my face and wrapped my arms around his waist. He tensed up at first, not expecting the sudden movement, but then he eased up and leaned his head on mine.

"You're right," I sighed. I pulled my phone out of my pocket and looked at the time. My eyes widened and I jumped up. "We're late," I said, a little bit too loud. Shane rolled his eyes and stood up next to me.

"Calm down," Shane wiped his thumb across my cheek, a bunch of black gunk appeared on his thumb. Crap. My mascara and eyeliner was smeared all over my face mixed with my dried tears.

"Oh my god. Crap. My makeup!" I ran past Shane and into the bathroom. I looked like a raccoon that had just been ran over. I looked around that bathroom, and then I realized that I wasn't in mine. I was too lazy to go back upstairs to get my makeup removing wipes; so I settled for the plain baby wipes instead. Little by little my makeup was coming off. Within four minutes my face was completely makeup free. I grabbed my backpack and looked through it for my emergency makeup kit. Just when I was about to apply my mascara, Shane popped his head into the bathroom.

"You don't need makeup," He came up behind me and grabbed the bottle of mascara. I willingly let him take the wand out of my hand and the he took the emergency makeup kit away. I didn't put up a fight because I know that I wasn't getting my makeup back anytime soon.

"I don't believe you," I mumbled and I walked out of the bathroom. Shane grabbed my wrist and spun me around.

"Well you should," He said. He kissed my forehead, making my heart flutter, and then started walking towards the front door. It should be impossible to have this many feelings for a person you've ignored for two weeks- more than that actually. You've been ignoring him ever since eighth grade. Some people might not call it ignoring, but I tried to keep my distance from him.

I followed Shane out to his car, he was all ready to leave. I opened the car door and was greeted by the screams of Vic Fuentes and Kellin Quinn. King for a Day was being blasted inside of his car. I started singing without even realizing it.

The drive to school consisted of me humming and singing alone to the Collide with the Sky album, and Shane quietly laughing when I would try to sing a high note, or when I would try to scream. I laughed with him, I was no singer.

When we got to the school, it was halfway through first period. Great. Time to face the wrath of Mrs. Sealock. Maybe she'll go easy on us... probably not.

I sighed and let Shane walk into the class first. Mrs. Sealock wasn't even in the room! Shane and I both smiled at our luck and ran to the back of the classroom. Despite all the murmurs and stares we were getting, I was still happy that she wasn't there to see us arrive late. Minutes later a substitute walked into the classroom.

"I'm sorry for being late Class, my piece of crap car broke down on the way here and ugh- it's been such a bad morning." The substitute plopped down on the desk chair and all eyes were on her. She looked like she had just finished college, she had blonde hair that was side braided and blue eyes. "So, I suppose that I should take roll," She pulled out a piece of paper and started calling out names. I rolled my eyes at the boys who were trying to flirt with her.

"Kaelyn Green?" She looked up.

"Here," I said, not very loud but she heard me. I still couldn't believe our luck.

Carter's POV

"Did it work?" Ryder's hushed tone startled me. I didn't know that he was going to sneak up on me like that. I was standing in a deserted classroom, waiting to give him my failure report.

"Not exactly the way I wanted it to," I replied. Ryder ran his fingers through his hair and stared at me.

"What does that mean? Did you drive her to school? Did you make a move?" Ryder questioned.

"Well... I made a move to get away from Shane." I nervously chuckled.

"Shane was there? Wow. Guess he played her last night and is going to never speak to her again. Well, if that's so then we don't need to go through with this plan anymore," Ryder clapped his hands together. I shook my head.

"I don't think that's what happened. I don't know exactly what he did, but, Shane didn't play her and when he was there this morning, he acted as if he was protecting her. He really cares about her. Maybe we should just let them be," I said.

"There is no way in hell that I am just going to let them be. They are not going to be together. Ryder Coleman always gets the girl. Always." Ryder said through gritted teeth. He stormed out of the room, leaving me there to feel guilty about coming up with this whole idea in the first place.
