Chapter 93: Chapter 93
Nancy had not had the time to speak to Jason about Phoebe's conspiracy. Anytime she wanted to bring up the topic, Jason would ask one thing or the other that would make her forget about it and by the time she remembered, the opportunity would be lost.
She decided that she was going to wait till after the celebrations and then tell him before she left his house if she still felt inclined to.
They got home after the day's work to hear the squeaking laughter of children in the house.
'My sister must have arrived. I can hear the laughter of my niece and nephew', Jason said, so happy as he jumped out of the car and went up the stairs, calling out to them.
They heard their names, recognized their uncle's voice and came running towards him with their arms stretched for their uncle to lift them.
Nancy followed behind him, marvelling at this new side of Jason she had not known existed.
Jason lifted the boy and threw him up in the air and he bubbled with laughter.
'Why did you not come to the airport to take us home?'
'I'm sorry. I will make it up to you. I have no excuse'.
He picked the girl and did the same to her and she squealed with merriment. Jason did not put her down but carried her on his shoulder while taking the boy's hands.
'That's okay. You will have to buy lots of gifts for us to make up for that mistake. Accepted? Vera asked.
'Acceoted!' he said.
'Bruno!' he called.
'Yes, Mr. Campbell?'
'Take these keys, and go to my car and get those boxes in the boot'.
On their way home, he had stopped in a toy store and bought lots of toys and at that time, Nancy had wondered if it was really necessary, but as she stood watching him with the children, she could not help smiling and thinking that he would make a great father.
Why had fate been so cruel to him? His first wife was not sincere enough with him to want to bear his children because of her ulterior motives and there was Phoebe who wanted to hoist another man's baby to him as his. When was he really going to get the joy of being a father. The father of his own children?
Of course he could adopt Phoebe's child and it would be his but then, it should be his choice not some imposed on him by deceit.
Nancy was determined, now more than ever to expose Phoebe for the fraud that she was.
'Welcome Jason, good to see you'.
'Sally, I'm glad you all could make it. But where is Chris?'
'He won't be able to make it. He had other commitments. We were supposed to go with him actually but we decided that we should be at both places. We would represent him here and he would represent us at his parents luncheon. But he promised to come here if he could escape', Sally said laughing.
'That's okay. At least you and my niece and nephew are here. This holiday will be priceless'.
'And who is this beauty that came in with you?' Sally asked.
Nancy had been waiting for her to finish her speech so that she could welcome her to the Jason's mansion but Sally had beat her to it by asking who she was.
'Good day, ma'am.I am Nancy Jones. Mr. Campbell's personal secretary'.
'Oh, that's good. It is a pity what happened to Mrs. Amos, your predecessor'.
'Indeed. But you are welcome, Ma'am'.
Bruno brought in the boxes and Jason put her niece down and distributed the gifts between them and their squeals of joy showed that they liked what he had got for them. He really knew what the children would like. He was really a good man. Nancy thought to herself as she went into the kitchen to speak to Mrs. Potts.
As they went in, Sally saw the way Jason had been looking at the secretary, and how he had looked after her as she walked away and knew that he had feelings for her. She did not blame him though, she was very young and beautiful. She was glad that her brother had completely got over that witch and heartbreaker Rebecca. But she knew that he had been having an affair with Phoebe before she left and all the time she had called and asked about her, he had never told her that he was no longer with Phoebe.
'How is Phoebe?' she asked.
'She is good', he said off handedly.
Sally could sense that something was not quite right.
'Are you two still together?'
'Sally, it is a long story and not one that we can talk about while standing. I shall tell you the whole thing because I need advise from you. But that will be later, maybe, after dinner's.
Sally shook her head and wondered what it was that was bothering her brother this way.
Jason went into his room to freshen up for dinner.
He knew that he had to tell his sister about Nancy and his feelings for her. He had been virtually unable to control himself since the last time they had kissed. It was with supreme control that he had kept his hands away from her. And most times when he saw the desire in her eyes and the hurt, he cursed himself for being such a heel.
He wished that he could tell her that it was alright but he had most times asked one stupid question after another anytime she had wanted to speak, thinking that she was going to ask him never to touch her again. He could not bear to hear her say that because he believed that they were meant to be together.
Who knows why he had had to be the one to knock her down with his car that fateful day? It must all have been predestined.
Jason also knew that he would have to tell his sister about Phoebe and her pregnancy and oh God, this was all so complicated. He wished he could extricate himself from this web that Phoebe had woven round him.
Anyways, he would have to deal with it the way he possibly could but he hoped everything would work out for the best. He did not want to lose Nancy and he also wanted his child though not his mother. Everything would be alright, he consoled himself and hoped that were the truth.
