Chapter 90: Chapter 90

After Mrs. Potts had left, Nancy thought about what she had said and was still thinking about it when she heard Phoebe's voice.

'Think about the devil and he is here!' she thought and continued eating.

'You are here? How are you feeling today?' Phoebe asked to Nancy's surprise.

'Well, I am good. Better than I was yesterday. Thanks for your concern'.

'Itbis not concern, Nancy. I just want you to get better sooner so that you can go to the office and continue with your duties and not waste people's time on the bed pretending to be I'll. I am pregnant as well and I am not going round pretending to fall sick like you! You have to earn your pay, do you understand? Afterall, you are just a mere employee here'.

Nancy was growing impatient with this woman but she advised herself to calm down.

Phoebe wanted to say other things when her phone rang.

'I'll be back, have to pick this call'. And she hastily left Nancy.

Nancy did not think much about it until she heard her voice behind her house, close to the window.

She seemed to be arguing with someone.

Was she still arguing with Jason about her? She crept closer to hear what they were saying but as though Nancy knew of her intent, which was not possible since she could not see Nancy, she moved further away. Or maybe it was because she did not want to be overheard.

Nancy's curiosity was piqued. She came out of the house, gently shut the door and crept closer to where Phoebe was answering the call. The walls of the building served as a shield, hiding her from Phoebe's view.

'Look, I paid you handsomely for the job you did for me. How come you are asking for more?'

Nancy could not hear the other part of the conversation but she still listened to Phoebe's part of it thinking that she would be able to deduce what was said.

'Yes, I know that I am yet to fulfill the other promise of sleeping again with you. But I have been pretty busy. I shall call you to let you know where we shall meet for it. Wait a minute', Phoebe said. I feel that there is someone here, she moved closer to where Nancy was standing eavesdropping.

Nancy nearly collapsed. She felt Phoebe would catch her but quickly and noiselessly entered one of the empty rooms that was near her and thank goodness it was unlocked and made no squeaky sounds.

After ascertaining there was no one eavesdropping on her, Phoebe continued with her telephone conversation.

'It's okay, there was no one there. For a minute there, I was scared', she spoke into the phone

'So was I, thought Nancy as she crept back to the place she could better hear what Phoebe was saying.

'And by the way', the way you are troubling me idls really uncalled for. I made the promise to give you the best sex you have ever had if your performance was above board but Jason is still not convinced that the pregnancy is his!'

:How can that be? I don't know but he has refused to propose or announce our engagement. He says to give him time to consider it. What could he possibly be considering if he didn't have doubts?

If he does not propose after Christmas like he said, then I shall take back the money I gave you to falsify those reports'.

'But it would be your fault. Why would a man not accept a pregnancy that had been proven to be his? It was your job to ensure that but I am getting the feeling that he does not care for it, then it means that he isn't convinced'.

'Will you keep quiet? What would you know about love? How can you judge my relationship with him and come up with the deduction that he dies not live me? If he doesn't, then who does he love? Just pray that everything moves according to plan, else, you have a refund to do and I know you wouldn't want that!' And Phoebe ended the call.

'Foolish boy. He could not even satisfy a woman but he wants me to give him the best f**k of his life. Imagine demanding that I fulfill such a promise I made him when I do not even know if my efforts will pay off.

And that Jason, he thinks he's too good for me, does he? If only he knew that I do not love him, his arrogance would be greatly reduced. Fool. He'd better be very careful, else...'

Nancy did not wait to hear the rest, she quickly crept back into her house and pretended as though she was dozing on the sofa. The food open and half eaten.

Phoebe came back into the room to taunt her further.

She didn't have long to wait before the door to her room was pushed open.

She stayed like that for a while and gently opened her eyes.

'Who is that again?' she asked.

'Your worst nightmare!' Phoebe replied.

'But why do you think you can be my worst nightmare? Were you not taught by your parents to knock before entering someone's room?'

Phoebe made to slap her and Nancy caught her hand in mid air.

'Dont you ever raise your hands to me ever again'.

'Your insolence is becoming Infuriating. I wonder what is inflating you deflated ego.

Could be that Jason had told you that he loves you and you are growing a swollen head?' Phoebe said and laughed sarcastically.

'Maybe you do not know that he has said that to a million other women and will say that to twice that number in the new year. So, do not think that you are special because you are not especially not when you are carrying someone else's child. How could you suppose you could possibly keep his attention for long? You are just a passing fancy to him.

Ha made me pregnant and is getting married to me and you still think that you have a future with him? Dream on girl, I mean that is the only thing you have to console you isn't it?'

Phoebe said looking at her condescendingly and smiling at her derisively.

Nancy looked at her and felt pity for her.

'You just said my pregnancy isn't his. How are you sure of that? And I am not even passing it off as his but what about you? Passing off your lover's pregnancy as his to blackmail him emotionally into marrying you.

You were talking about my future just now? I wonder at the future you are going to have with a man who does not love you and who you are obviously not in love with but just obsessed with marrying.

Have you also thought of the kind of future you are preparing for the child or is your greed and selfishness blinding to the fact that you want that child not to be a total child but a broken one from a broken marriage and it will definitely affect it psychologically.

But I do not expect you to have thought of all these. You are a selfish woman who thinks about herself alone and loves no one but herself including her own unborn child.

You came here to talk to me at length about your pregnancy and intended marriage. Why do you feel the need to do that if you are as confident of your man and love as you claim? Lady of the manor indeed'.

Phoebe's face had registered shock as Nancy spoke.

Could it be that she knew something? How did she know that the baby was not Jason's? Was it just a lucky guess?

Whatever, she would have to be on her guard from hence forth. And why had she implied that her pregnancy might be Jason's? Phoebe thought to herself.

The shock Nancy saw on Phoebe's face was palpable and priceless.

'Yes, let her wonder at my source of information. Her pride and confidence are getting too much.
