Chapter 80: Chapter 80

Nancy felt uncomfortable because even as she helped out, she could feel Mrs. Potts eyes on her.

'Okay, Mrs. Potts, what do you have in mind?

'What do you mean?'

'You have been staring at me all morning. Tell me if I passed inspection or mot'.

Mrs. Potts burst out laughing.

'It is good that you asked this. Have you looked at the mirror lately? You are an eye sire. Child, what are you doing to yourself?'

Nancy was unreasonable vexed.

'I am pregnant, in case you haven't noticed and you do not expect me to look hot with all the pregnancy blues!' she snapped.

Mrs. Potts looked at her shocked. Nancy had never spoken to her that way before. The problem was even more than she had imagined and it was not as a result of the mood swings associated with pregnancy.

Nancy caught herself. Why was she taking out her frustrations on poor Mrs. Potts? She had done nothing to annoy her but had made sure her stay in the house was comfortable.

'I am sorry. I do not know what the problem is with me', she said remorseful.

'That's okay. Let it out. It is better out than suppressed. Suppressing your anger too much makes it poisonous too the body and we do not want that now, do we?'

'No! we do not!' Nancy answered meekly.

'So, tell me what the problem is'.

'Oh, Mrs Potts!' Nancy said but could not continue as she broke down in tears.

Mrs. Potts made a sign for Sandy to leave the kitchen and she quickly obeyed.

'We are alone here now. I have sent Sandy to do some things. And it will be a while before she is back. Tell me what has troubled you so, my child'.

'I do not know. It is actually nothing '.

'Has Mr. Campbell sir misbehaved with you?' Mrs. Potts asked.

'Oh no. It is just that he wanted is to be in a relationship but I could not just jump from one relationship into another. I am yet to survive the one I just got out from'.

Mrs Potts nodded. She had known that it was something to do with her boss but why would a request to be in a relationship with him cause Nancy so much distress? Except... Could it really be?

'Go on my child. I am all ears. You do not like him enough to be with him then?'

'It is not like that. He is a good man and very kind too but I have to think about my future'.

Mrs Potts understood now, what she was not saying. Nancy wanted more than just having a fleeting sexual relationship with Mr. Campbell sir.

'Did you tell him this?'

'I told him that I did not want to be a play thing for any rich man'.

'And what did he say?'

'He said that was not what he had in mind. But what else could he have in mind for a girl who is pregnant for another man like me? He didn't once say that he loved me, just that he is attracted to me. Should I have accepted that?'

Mrs. Potts shook her head, deep in thought. Jason must really like her to have asked her to be close to her even in her condition but he could have done better than just propositioned her. Mrs. Potts was sure that if he had proposed,Nancy would have accepted.

Mr. Campbell was not a villain, she could attest to that. There must be a reason behind his request.

'Is that why you are so upset? He cannot for e you to do what you do not want to do. So relax'.

'But that is just it. I can't relax. Phoebe is pregnant for him. They have done a test and it's been confirmed that the baby is Jason's.

He called me the other night to ask my advice. He told me that he had wanted to marry someone else but that Phoebe was pregnant and he wanted to know if he should go ahead and propose to the other woman or marry Phoebe to give his child legitimacy.

He said it was going to be a contract marriage and after a year or two, they were going to be divorced and then he could marry the other woman who is actually his choice!'

'Snd what did you advice him to do?'

'Ehat could I say to him but the truth? I told him that more than his feelings, his child should come first and that he should give his heir legitimacy by marrying Phoebe even if it against his will and that he should forget about a divorce because I didn't think that Phoebe would be willing to give him one afterwards.

Also, that the other woman would be foolish to wait for him to divorce Phoebe and marry her because within the bonds of marriage, anything could happen including both parties falling in love with each other. Or bring brought together by their child and wanting to remain together for his sake'.

Mrs. Potts nodded. Nancy was such a wise girl. All she had said was true. She really knew Phoebe very well. That conniving woman!.

How had she managed to get herself pregnant with Jason's child? This was really a great complication. Little wonder that Nancy was so distressed.

But who was this other person that Jason had wanted to marry? Could it have been Nancy?

From their discussion, she had realised that Nancy was in love with their boss. Else, she would not have been affected this way by all this occurrence.

She patted her back consolingly.

'Do not worry. Everything will be alright. You will see. Nature has its way of fixing things. That I am sure of. Just be happy for the sake of your child'.

'But how can I not be worried after what I heard last last night?' Nancy wailed.

'And what was that?' Potts asked alarmed. What other developments have occured?

Nancy narrated to her all that had happened last night after she had left her quarters for a stroll brought on by what Jason had told her.

Mrs. Potts was sure now that something was not right

She had known that Phoebe could not be trusted but not she was very sure of it.

Phoebe was playing a dirty game with her boss and they needed to expose her.
