Chapter 81: Chapter 81
The weekend passed by so slowly for Nancy. She went to the Catholic church nearby to worship.
She was not sure if she heard half of what was being said or not but at least it gave her time to go away from the house.
Even the programs on television was no longer entertaining nor distracting her from her thoughts.
Her work was the only thing she could bury herself in. She could not wait for Monday.
After service, she went home and into the main house where Mrs. Potts told her that Phoebe had come to visit and was with the boss.
Nancy's mood that was not good previously, got worse.
'It's okay. I know how you feel. Like I told you, everything will be alright. You just wait and see'.
Nancy smiled uncertainly. How was it going to get better? she thought. Instead, it could only get worse.
'I am older than you ain't I?'
'You are!'
'Then trust me when I say that you will look back on these happenings and laugh at the way you allowed yourself to be affected. And from hence forth, don't call me Mrs. Potts, call me mother'.
Nancy was overcome by her emotions and started sobbing.
'Now, now, what have I said wrong? Wipe your tears my child. It is going to be fine'.
'Thank you mother Potts for being there for me. Your words are like a balm to my soul. And of course I trust you. God bless you'.
'God bless you too,my child. Go and dish something for yourself and I shall tell you what I have in mind'.
Nancy did as she was told and ate. She was curious to know what Potts had in mind but she could not rush her food so that she would not end up vomitting.
After she had eaten, they retired to an inner chamber.
'You said that you now know where Phoebe now lives?' Potts asked.
'Yes! Why?'
'You could go on another stroll and loss your way, and see if there is a way you could get Phoebe to confess or hear her conversation.
Now that she feels that she has ensnared Mr. Campbell, she might just be a little bit more careless and speak out of turns and you can eavesdrop on her if possible or if they went out like they did the other time, you will easy hear what they are saying.
We need to know what she is up to and if it is as I suspect, then we can tell Mr. Campbell about it and the wedding will not take place'.
'You mean you suspect something as well?'
'I have never trusted that woman and after our chat yesterday, I felt that something was off. The boss never really liked Phoebe. It was just that she was the first woman he went out with after his recovery from his wife's betrayal. We were all so glad that he had started socializing again but she became too clingy and has no respect for elders.
Sometimes she would act as though she owned the house and we were employed to serve her.
Bruno who has a high tolerance started detesting her high and mighty attitude but kept quiet if being with her made his master happy and leads him to a complete recovery from the heartbreak which he had suffered.
We never knew it would become as serious as this. We thought our boss would breakup with her like he did the others because he never allowed himself to get too attached to women after his wife. He was guarding his heart you see'.
'Thatt's okay. I shall take a stroll to that place as you have just suggested. I hope I shall be able to learn something new'.
'You do that. And not something new but something that would benefit us and enable us ruin her plans.
Nancy did not know she was supposed to get the truth out of Phoebe. She was really a very cunning woman. She would definitely not just confess to her about her plans. She would guard it jealously. If only she had the a means of getting into her apartment and going through her things, she knew that she would get something that would help.
She could pose as someone and do that but Phoebe knew her and she could not imagine a guise that would change her appearance completely.
How she managed to get pregnant for Jason still marvelled her. It must all have been a ploy to get Jason solely to herself.
Now, Jason hardly spent time with Rebecca. That gladdened Nancy's heart but Phoebe's pregnancy dampened it.
But what if there was really nothing to find out? What if Phoebe's pregnancy was actually Jason's? And her apprehensions were just baseless but just her subconscious reacting to her distrust of Phoebe and love for Jason?
She was undecided but she could not deny a kind of excitement that filled her, it would be so satisfying exposing Phoebe assuming there was something to expose of course. What she had heard between her and her lover that night might just be mere speculations by her lover because of his fear of losing her. Afterall a woman knows more often than not who the father of her child was, even if she had had numerous lovers.
But of there was anything to find out, she owed it to Jason and herself to try and find it out.
