Chapter 187: Chapter 187
As soon as Mattias came out from the prison, Rodney's wife followed him. She was cunning and made sure he did not realise that he was followed.
She followed him to a place where she was sure they were keeping Josephine.
As soon as he entered, she sneeked in after him and then she saw the girl and those guarding her.
'Mattias, who is this woman with you?'
Mattias looked back only to find the boss' wife behind him. How had she followed him without him being aware of it? He felt that the boss was going to do away with him because considering what the woman had in mind for the little girl, the boss would never forgive him for such a skip and would haunt him down to the lowest of the underworld to get him and extract his pound of flesh from him.
'Ma'am, what is the problem? If you needed something, you could have asked me for it and I would have supplied it'
'Mattias, who is she?'
'She is the boss' wife'.
'Welcome ma'am, we didn't know that the boss would send you to such a place as this'.
'Yet there is a little girl in such a place as this? If I can't come to such a place as this, then that girl should not be in such a place as well'.
She walked to the bed where the girl was and looked down at her. She could see that she had been crying. Tear stains were still on her cheeks but it still did not diminish her beauty. She was as lovely as her mother though took alot after her father. His hair and eye colouring.
Her heart went out to the little girl at once. She had said all she did to force her husband to release the girl and she hoped that it had worked.
'Mattias, be truthful to me. Between us', she whispered to him as he led him out.
Mattias considered this and felt, what harm could it possibly do especially since he had given the other men a signal they had planned on to take the girl to another venue.
'The mother of the girl visited boss in prison and pleaded with him. I was surprised but her words made boss have a change of heart and he asked me to make provisions to take the girl back to her parents though, how I will go through the rock blocks and checking points is still a marvel to me but I have promised him that I would try. Then you came with your suggestion of doing away with the girl and he did not know what to do but he knew that he could not allow you to do to the girl what you had in mind. So he asked me to hastily move the girl so that she could be sent back to her parents who would live her. Now that you have followed me to this place, you have put me in great trouble'.
She was shocked that Rodney had actually been moved by Nancy's words that he had ordered that his daughter be taken back to her. What have I done? She wailed inwardly. She had just complicated issues when she had wanted to help. Rodney was not as heart hearted as she had assumed then. And why should he be, the child was his afterall. It was his blood running through her veins.
'Actually, I said what I did because I wanted him to be scared of what I could do to the girl that he would order her release back to her parents. If I had known that he had already arrived at such a decision, then I would not have made such an effort but since our interests are aligned, and you may have problems taking the girl back to her parents, how about giving her to me to take to her parents? It would be easier for me to pass the check point than you'.
Mattias considered this. It was a reasonable enough offer but the problem was that he did not know if he could trust what she had said. She had been pretty convincing there in prison and if his boss had believed her, who was he not to?
'If you had been forthright, in prison, it would all have been very easy to do all that you have asked but right now, I do not know what to think and my boss' instruction was really very specific. 'Take the girl back to her parents before she gets into more trouble or have to endure more pain than she has already suffered'.
'I am not asking you, I am ordering you. I have the power to make your boss remain in prison or facilitate his parole, so get me the girl and if you want to assure yourself that I am indeed taking her to her parents, then you can come with us'.
Mattias was now confused because he knew that by now the men had taken the girl to another location and the security of such a place would be tight.
Why was life so complicated?
'There is a problem with that's, he told her.
'What problem could that possibly be?'
'She is no longer here!'
'What do you mean that she is no longer here? I just saw her with my own two eyes, so what are you saying or do you want to antagonize me? I have been very cool with you which is quite unlike me for the purpose of saving that girl but if you do not bring that girl out here right away, you shall lose your life!'
To buttress his point, Mattias went back inside with her and the place that was brimming with activity just then was as quiet as a churchyard.
'Where is everybody?' she asked surprised.
'I told you that the girl was no longer here. The men saw a new person even though the person happened to be the boss' wife and escaped with the girl through the back door. It is what they had been asked to do once they sense trouble'.
'But you know the new location she had been taken to, so just take me there and tell them that we are all working together and that your boss had sent me'.
'I hope you are right but now that you came with me, they may shoot me on sight because they no longer trust me. They may think that I am now in cohort with the enemy'.
She did not know what to do. It had all just become very complicated but having come this far, she was not going to give up just yet.
'Let us get to the new location first. If worse comes to worse, you can call your boss and make him confirm your claim'.
'But you know they are not allowed their own cell phones and if a call should come for them, the warden would screen the call before giving it to the recipient.Ir listen in which is not really what we want in this situation. Except we can convince them to send someone with us back to prison and by now visiting hours are already over'.
