Chapter 177: Chapter 177
Rebecca had followed the proceedings and had seen how everything had ended on that day. She had been undecided on whether to visit Jason or not. It would not have been s. issue if the girl Nancy had continued acting funny towards him whoever put her up to it. But she regained her memory and now, Jason was all over her. She did not know if she still stood a chance or not.
She wondered why she had left him in the first place. It was true that she did not lack make admirers not companions but it irked her that Jason had recovered from his heartbreak and was no longer pining for her. She was used to being the centre of attention and this was just not what she wanted.
She visited him at home but saw Nancy and Jason in the garden like Mrs. Potts had told her she would.
'Good day Jason love, how are you doing?'
'Ah, Rebecca, it is you'.
'Yes, it is. I followed the court proceedings on TV and the events really touched me. It make me cry and I came to find out how you were doing'.
It did not escape her notice how he had held Nancy possessively and protectively and she realised it was not going to be easy coming between them but there was no harm in trying.
'I never knew you had time for such nonsense', Jason said and Nancy bit back a smile.
'Why will I not? My ex husband was in trouble and though we are no longer together, does not mean we do not share a sweet history together that I should not feel moved especially when Nancy gave that false testimony. I felt like beating the truth out of her because I knew that my Jason couldn't be as cold blooded as you painted him', she said looking at Nancy accusingly.
Nancy had regretted that episode and was grateful that she had been able to rectify her mistake before any harm was done and the bad guys were allowed to go home free.
Even with them in custody, she was still afraid for her life and that of her baby despite Jason's assurances. It was not that she did not trust Jason, it was just that Rodney and his goons were just too devilish.
Jason looked at Nancy and saw the distress in her face and felt that what Rebecca had said had upset her.
'She may have done that but she did that under duress and misconception. Not that it is any business of yours of course but she had lost her memory and someone was feeding her lies against me but once she regained her memory, you saw how she helped our case if you were really following the proceedings the way you claimed that you were!'
It really hurt, what Jason just said and how he said it. Rebecca felt that she had been given a sharp slap on the cheek but she was not through yet.
'But if she really loves you, memory loss could never really take away the instinctive feelings she was supposed to have for you. Women especially are intuitive. Her mind should have been able to tell her that you could not do any such thing and that she had a connection with you'.
Jason had no answer to that. Nancy had felt a connection alright but Phoebe had made sure to tell her that her mind was playing tricks on her.
'You mean like you loved me body and soul when we were still married?'
This was not how Rebecca wanted the discussion to go.
'Oh Jason! Can you not forget the past for the moment and dwell on the here and now?'
'You are my past and I wonder what you are doing here with my love, Nancy is my here and now and my future. You have no business throwing accusations at her or scolding her for something that was not her fault. You said you came here to see how we were faring . Well, you can see we doing okay. You have satisfied your curiousity. You can leave now, we are having our quiet moment together and I do not want any intruders or interruptions please. We are grateful that you came. It was nice of you but right now, we would like to be left alone. We have private matters to discuss. Thank you'.
'You are driving me? You were not even hospitable enough to offer me a cup of coffee!'
'That's true. Please go back inside and ask Mrs. Potts for a jar of coffee. You remember Mrs. Potts, don't you? She will gladly oblige you. Bye Rebecca and thanks for looking in to us!'
Rebecca had never felt so humiliated and embarrassed before and just because of a tiny girl who could not even hold a touch to her. It was well. Jason had made his intentions clear. She wondered why she kept giving him the opportunity and satisfaction to hurt and humiliate her. She decided that it was time she left the district for good this time since the purpose for which she returned in the first place was so elusive that she had finally accepted the bitter truth that Jason never going to be hers again even if as a lover.
As she walked away, she heard the lovers murmuring and the girl laughed heartily and she felt even more humiliated that they were making a joke at her expense.
She had no intention of asking Mrs. Potts for any useless coffee, so she just walked on to where she had packed her car and drove off in fury and was never heard of again.
'The way you treated her was really quite unlike you, Jason!' Nancy said.
'Well, I know her better than you do. If I do not take such a harsh tone with her, she will take it as a common on and will keep visiting this place and become the next Phoebe and you will not remember that I was trying to be hospitable. You will assume immediately that something was going on between us and that would cause another rift in our relationship. She might even see how naive you are and feed you with stories that you would find difficult to disbelieve. Where would I be then, start life afresh?'
Nancy laughed because she realised that what he had said was true.
'Oh Jason?' was all she could say as her love for him shown forth in her eyes.
He pulled her close and kissed her with the same love reflected in his own eyes.
'There is a question I have been meaning to ask you', he said, eyeing her intently.
Nancy wondered what it was this time.
'What question?'
'Will you marry me?' he asked kneeling on one knee and brandishing a box which had a golden ring with one diamond stone on it.
Nancy was shocked. She had not expected this at least not this soon. She had thought that it would come after the child was born.
As though reading her thoughts, 'I need to give your child my name because I am not just adopting it, I already feel that it is a part of me'.
'I do not know what to say!' she gushed.
'A simple Yes, would suffice', he said dryly.
'Yes, Jason Yes. I shall be honoured to be your wife', she said tears of joy, rolling down her cheek.
Jason Put the ring on her finger with trembling hands because he was so overcome with joy. He was finally going to make Nancy his wife.
Nancy kissed the ring on her finger and hugged him and he kissed her tears away.
