Chapter 159: Chapter 159
Nancy felt dizzy.
'I have to go in for now. I have had enough exercise for today. I feel a headache coming on'.
'Oh no, are you sure it is not as a result of our discussion,l? I should have kept my mouth shut'. Phoebe said in false panic.
'No. It's nothing of the sort. I have had this headaches since I became conscious. So don't blame yourself' but I really have to take my drugs and rest my head for a little while'.
They went back inside with Phoebe secretly jubilant. She had got Nancy's trust and had succeeded in sowing a seed of distrust for Jason in her. What she had to do now was to water it and see how she could cause Nancy's health to deteriorate in the process.
She helped Nancy with her drugs and covered her with the covers before leaving her alone, hoping that when the effect of the drug wore off, Nancy would still think about all she had told her and get more headaches.
As she climbed down, Mrs. Potts accosted her.
'What did you say to Nancy?'
'What do you mean, 'what did you say to her'' Phoebe asked feigning ignorance.
'I meant exactly that. You were not supposed to say anything that would get her upset but you obviously did because she came in looking less happier than when she went out for her stroll', Potts said looking at Phoebe accusingly. 'I also kept watch and the both of you in deep discussion and saw how her expression kept changing from surprise to shock to horror. Mr. Campbell sir must hear of this!'
'You have never been able to keep yourself out of other people's business', Phoebe said trying to hide her apprehension. She knew that if Jason were to find out, then she would not hear the last of it.
'But you'd better stay in your limits where I am concerned. I am soon going to be the lady of this house. In short that is what I am and the earlier you get it into your thick skull, the better for you'. Then as though as an afterthought, 'And for your information, not that it is any business of yours anyways, we were talking about a vampire movie I had seen and that might explain the horror on her face. She became too scared to listen to more of the story and decided she had had enough stroll and would like to sleep for a while. So please bey guest and talk to Jason about it but remember that if she confirms my story, then I shall not spare you. How dare you suspect me of being able to descent so low'. And she walked off angrily.
Mrs. Potts knew that she could not trust Phoebe but how could she prove that she was trying to ruin the health of poor Nancy because she saw her as a threat?
She decided to make a herbal tea for Nancy. One that was safe for both mother and baby. Thank goodness she iked tea and have despised coffee since she became pregnant. As she made the tea, she cursed that Rodney man who had come and turned their lives upside down this way.
She hoped Nancy would recover soon.
She took the tea upstairs for Nancy but found her fast asleep.
She sat on a chair in her room watching her and praying silently for her as tears rolled down her cheek.
Potts knew that Nancy was in a very delicate and vulnerable condition. Until she was out of this amnesia, there could be a relapse and she had so many enemies in the house. People who wanted to see her fail and dead possibly.
She stood and went to place her hand on her forehead as a gesture of goodwill and found that she was running temperature.
The temperature was really very high. She did not know what to do. She soaked a rag in water and started mopping her forehead with it.
The rag came out feeling hot.
Nancy started shivering.
Mrs. Potts felt that it was best if she forced her to take the tea she had brought her.
She tried waking her and her eyes were bloodshot as though feeling as hot as the rest of her head.
Mrs. Potts was scared. She gave her the tea and called Mrs. Sally Whitman to come see what was happening as she wondered why Jason was not back yet.
He had said that he was not going to stay long.
Sally Whitman called for the doctor and Dr. Manuel came.
'Have you given her anything?' he asked.
'None that I know of'. Sally said.
'We went out in the grounds today for a little strolling exercise and she suddenly felt the start of a headache and decided that she wanted to sleep for a while. I brought her in immediately and she took the drugs the doctor had prescribed for her before she slept. It is surprising that she should be running temperature as high as this', Phoebe spoke at length.
The doctor checked the medicines and shook his head. These drugs couldn't have brought the temperature on. It is meant to have calmed the headache and any temperature rise. This must have been brought on by something else. Something external', the doctor said deep in thought.
'Something external like what? Like a Psychological stress?' Jason asked and everyone looked up to find him standing there formidable and they wondered how long he had been there but glad that he was back.
'Welcome Jason. Yes, something like that. She must have thought too much. Her injuries bring on headaches, you must have been told and an indepth thought must have triggered off this temperature rise and headache'.
'Who was with her today?' Jason barked really angry.
There was silence all around.
'You mean no one was with her? But I remember you deciding to go strolling with her Phoebe. Why are you silent now?', he asked. 'What did you talk about?'
Phoebe got herself in control.
'Nothing. Just some mundane things that are not supposed to affect her in any way'.
'Mundane things like what? Because your idea of mundane things could be dangerous. Did you not blurt out the news of her pregnancy when you were not supposed to? That was also mundane thing!'
'Why are you accusing me already without proof? Could she not have tried on her own to remember some things? I recall her saying that not remembering anything was frustrating and I told her to take it easy and that it would all come back to her eventually'.
'Please, the noise could be disturbing her. If you need to speak more, go outside so that we do not add to her headache'. Dr. Manuel advised sternly as he gave her the necessary treatment.
Jason looked at Phoebe with so much suspicion that she was scared by the distrust and dislike she saw in his eyes.
'I'd better be careful', she thought to herself.
