Chapter 156: Chapter 156
'We were going to tell her but not the way you blurted it out to her. Can't you see how shocked she is? You can't just bombard her with too much information at the same time. She just got home and we shall take our time to tell her the necessary things she should know for now', Sally said annoyed at Phoebe's lack of tact.
Phoebe did not care as long as her behaviour got her what she really wanted.
'I am sorry that I annoyed you all with my statement but I thought that she knew already. I mean was that not the first thing that should be told a mother so that she takes care of herself and her baby? And if she didn't know, why shouldn't we tell her?
Correct me if I am wrong but having survived the rigours and stress it's mother went through meeting with this accident and the kind of treatment received, would it not be unfortunate for it to be lost just when the mother is home safe?'
They all looked at themselves and felt that she had a point but like Sally had said, she did not present the matter the way she ought to have done that.
'Well, would you all stop discussing me as though I were not present? Because in case you have not noticed, I am here. So if I am pregnant, how did it happen and who is the father?'Nancy said looking round the table at all the faces there and finally resting on Jason's.
Phoebe was angry. She was trying to gain her trust by being friendly with her and instead of her to ask her the question directly, she was looking at Jason.
'Well, you see, Nancy, you shouldn't concern yourself with all that st the moment', he said.
'And Why not?'
'You have just come home. You are not fit yet to process alot of information. We are trying not to stress you out by giving you too much information at a time, the doctor himself advised against it and we also want you not to stress yourself trying to remember anything. Your memory will return soon but it cannot be forced because it could be detrimental to your health and that of your unborn baby'.
'Alright then but tell me one thing sincerely'.
'Yes, what is it?' Jason asked warily.
'You ate the father of my baby aren't you?'
Phoebe was so angry, she blurted out, 'No....'
But Jason interrupted her.
'You could say that but what gave you that impression?' he asked hoping against all hopes that she might recall something about their time together but trying to hide it.
'Well, I do not really know except that I feel a connection with you'. she said.
Chris smiled. True love shall always prevail and remain true no matter the circumstances, he thought.
'Yes, we do have a connection and alot of things in common but that is not for you to bother about right now. It can be frustrating that all you know about yourself and your past are just what you are told but not to worry, it will all come to you in due time'.he said smiling at her encouragingly.
Phoebe was seething. Here she was trying to see how she could poison Nancy's mind against Jason but she was busy cozying to him being so charming. She wished now that she had died in that shootout so that she could have peace and finally have the love of the man she sought.
Nancy smiled back at Jason so sweetly that he felt his heart twist within him with love and anguish.
'You know, I was only involved in an accident and got a bad hit on the head but I shall be alright. So you do not have to look as though you are mourning, I am not dead and you can say what you want to say before me. I am not a child that I cannot bear to hear the truth about myself', Nancy said. 'And you should all stop stealing glances at me as though I am an animal with two heads. In case you have not noticed, I am a human being just like you'.
Chris burst into laughter. The girl had spirit, he thought. No wonder Jason was mad for her.
Jason looked at him as though to say that he had totally lost it but his lips were twitching in controlled mirth. Alfred joined in Chris' laughter and when Sally joined in, Jason could not withhold his any more. They all laughed heartily, the mood in the room becoming lighter as tension was released.
Jason smiled at Nancy. He knew he could never stop loving her. Phoebe saw this and was gloomy. She was the only one who did not join in the laughter.
Mrs. Potts smiled in the kitchen. She and Sandy had been eavesdropping and though Bruno had frowned against it, he was also trying to hear what was being said.
They were all happy to have Nancy back.
They had thought that they had lost the dear girl. But Mrs. Potts made a vow to herself that she would help her regain her memory' in any safe way that she could possibly use.
'Eat now, Nancy for your health and that of your baby', Phoebe said smiling falsely.
Nancy nodded and as she ate, she invited them all to eat as well.
They all started eating with renewed vigour and Phoebe nibbed at her food in deep thought, thinking of a way out of this problem called Nancy permanently.
Soon Nancy stood and excused herself.
'I am feeling drowsy. Please could someone direct me to my room?'
Phoebe stood to do that but Jason was already up and leading her away from the table.
'My special thanks to the cook. The food was extremely delicious', Nancy said smiling apologetically at them for leaving the table before them all.
Jason wanted to carry her but thought better of it, thinking that it could frighten her but climbing the stairs, he felt would be too much strain on her, he threw caution to the wind and carried her up the stairs to her room and Phoebe watched all these with jealousy and two pairs of eyes followed hers as she watched them with animosity.
Chris and Alfred felt that Phoebe could be trouble because they could see as well as sense her jealousy.
