Chapter 153: Chapter 153
The doctors rushed to the bed, but putting the tube back on Nancy was useless because the monitor showed that she had stopped breathing.
They tried pumping air into her heart.
They kept pumping her chest with the hope that she would start breathing again no matter how faint so that they could quickly put it back on.
They did this many times but her chest always fell back down lifeless.
That was when Jason ran into the room.
He had seen Chris outside where the doctors had sent him and did not want to listen to anything. There would be time enough for that.
'What is happening here?', he asked though his subconscious already knew.
The doctors told him how they had tried to revive her but that she was finally gone.
'No!' he screamed.' It cannot be. I will not accept that and when f you do not revive her this instant, I shall sue this hospital to court!' The doctors looked at themselves shocked. Their look indicated they were bemused. They felt pity for Jason but it was too much for him to blame them for what had just happened not after everything they had done to assist him.
Chris looked in through the glass on the door and shook his head sadly. He had thought that their love story after all the storm was going to get a happy ending.
He went into the room with the intent to cause Jason to calm and get a hold on himself.
'Why are you blaming the doctors? They are not the reason for what has just happened. You know that they tried their best and lived up to their motto of saving lives and not taking it.If there should be anyone blame for what has just happened, then it should be Maze. He came in here out of the blue and took the oxygen source from Nancy which made her die gasping for air'.
'No! Never!',Jason said shaking his finger at Chris warningly. ' Never you say that word again!. My Nancy is not dead, she just went unconscious right doctors? Pardon me for anything I have done wrong. I did not mean to antagonize you but you see I made her a promise that we would get over all this alive. I try to keep my word. How come then do you want me to break the promise I have made to the live of my life? Please try even if once more to revive her. I beg of you'.
The doctors felt touched and their sympathy for Jason grew. They could imagine what he must be feeling
It was not easy losing a loved one. They had had to face this scene from surviving relatives anytime their loved ones died. It was not pleasant anymore and as doctors, no matter how you try to feel detached, it was not always easy.
So, to satisfy his plea and their conscience and not because they felt that she would miraculously come to life, they went to where Nancy lay and pumped her chest again and again and again but each time, her body just fell back on the body lifelessly.
The shook their heads sadly and in defeat removing the hand pump they wore in preparation to leave the room.
Chris who had gone out again because he could not bear to look at Jason because of the raw pain and anguish he saw in his eyes, saw Jason go to the body of Nancy and start pumping it again and calling her name over and over again. Begging her to come back to him.
He pumped harder and harder and the doctors tried to pull him away.
'You are abusing her body. She is gone and the earlier you get that through your dazed mind, the better'.
He pulled off them and continued and the doctors left him in annoyance but being very sympathetic to his plight.
They wished that there was something they could do but it was already too late. They were going to ask the family to give her a mercy death' in any case. So, it must all have worked out for good.
Jason pumped one last time in desperation, tears pouring down his cheek.
A sound alerted him. Nancy drew in a long breath and opened her eyes.
The monitor that had gone blank showing that there was no life, started up again.
'Doctor!' Jason shouted and Chris who had been watching all these through the glass door and feeling really sad for Jason called louder for the doctors to come quick .
They thought that Jason may have done something stupid, they rushed into the ward to find Nancy's eyes slightly open and the monitor reading again.
They could not believe it. They put their stethoscope back on, and checked her vitals.
'This is indeed a miracle. My. Campbell, you have managed to raise Nancy up from the dead'.
The head surgeon took some samples to run tests on her.
'How could this have happened sir?' A young doctor asked amazed.
'It must have been his strong faith that she couldn't die or his desperation or both or some outside force at work. Maybe someone is somewhere praying for her. We can't say but we had told Mr. Campbell before now, that the only way to bring her out of her coma was to shock her out of it. There is a procedure for that as you know', the young doctor nodded.
'But he refused', the older surgeon continued. 'I do not blame him though because it had a risk factor which was that forcing her awake that way could cause her brain cells to be permanently damaged and she would become regressive, regressing to her childhood years and acting like a child in a woman's body or she could be permanently mentally impaired. But she must have got a shock all the same from the source being taken from her and the vigorous way Mr. Campbell was pumping sir into her heart and calling out her name'.
Before they left, Nancy's eyes drifted close again and Jason came to the doctor pointing at her.
'Her eyes are drifting close again, hope it is not a relapse?'
'Take it easy Mr. Campbell. She has been off the radder for some time a d had been fed intravenously
She is bound to be weak. In fact, very weak. Do not trouble her. Let her have her rest as much as possible. No stress should be given her not even to ask her any simple question that would task her brain at this stage.
You could also make provisions for brooth to be brought to her because that is what she can comfortably take for now because her throat must be sore from not talking nor eating'.
True to what his words, Nancy kept drifting in and out of sleep or consciousness, Jason couldn't really ascertain which but if rest was what she needed to come back to him fully, then test was what she was going to have.
He had waited for so long for her to come to him and he was prepared to wait for much longer if that was what it would take for her to come to him fully recovered and the old Nancy he had always known and with whom he had fallen in love.
