Chapter 127: Chapter 127
Rodney had been silent all this while watching the road and Jason alternatively. He was anxious because he knew that Nancy must be in grave danger but not wanting to antagonize Jason by asking any unwarranted questions.
But after a while, he could not keep quiet any longer.
'What car type are we looking for?' he asked.
'I don't know '.
'Please tell me, two pairs of eyes are most definitely better than a pair. I am as bothered as you about the plight of Nancy especially in her condition'.
Jason had wanted to shout at him to stop pestering him but his words surprised him. First he spoke the truth about the pair of eyes but that was not f he knew what car to look for but he didn't and it was making him feel helpless and useless which are not the type of feelings he relished.
Secondly, he was amazed that Alfred had noticed Nancy's pregnancy and had still gone out on a date with her. This could only mean that his feelings for her ran deep. Deeper than he had envisaged or was Nancy the one who revealed it to him? Which was also a scary thought because it dignified that they had got real close and we're planning on getting closer and did not want any secrets between them.
'I do not know what car to look out for because I got there when the switch had already been made. I am just hoping my intuition would help me', he said in a deflated voice.
'Well, your intuition is not doing a good job at the moment. We better think logically. Who could possibly want to abduct a pregnant and harmless woman?' he asked.
Jason had his suspicious and had meant to go straight to Rodney's place to have it out with him but he was thinking that he had no evidence, not even a recording of his threat to make Nancy his.
He knew that he would have to share what he knew with Alfred which was not a prospect he admired but there was nothing to be done.
'You did warn me that her life was in danger and that I should watch over her. In fact that was why you came after us. Why would you say that if you do not know or at least have an idea who could be responsible for this?'
'Richmond!' he said harshly as though it was drawn out of him.
'What? Rich man?'
'Richmond. Rodney Richmond. The man responsible for her pregnancy'.
'Jow sure are you that he is the one? What reason could he possibly have for kidnapping a woman he had made pregnant?'
'What other reason is there? The imbecile got her pregnant under false pretenses of love and marriage. He never told Nancy that he was already a married man out for some fun and excitement which he probably was not getting from his wife.
We hen she became pregnant and refused to abort, he ditched her and ask her not to contact him any more because his wife and four children were important to him. She was not to a t smart and break his home if she did not want to face his wrath'. Jason said bitterly.
'If he wanted nothing to do with her anymore, then he probably was not responsible for her abduction. He would still want to protect his marriage. What could have changed since then?'
'He visited us on Christmas day and asked to speak to the both of us. He made his intention to take Nancy back with him known to us. Nancy refused outrightly and to further buttress her point, I told him that he had lost his right over the baby when he threatened to take us to court and sue for paternal rights, because I had already adopted Nancy's baby and would be giving him my name since I was going to get married to her.
That was the first time Nancy heard of the proposal but thank goodness she did not let on but Richmond left threatening to have her.
I thought that he would go about it the legal way and was planning for whatever action he wanted to take but my in law, Chris, married to my elder sister told me that he might abduct Nancy because he felt that Richmond would not want to antagonize his wife and her wealthy family by bringing in his illegitimate child and mistress into the picture.
Knowing the kind of dishonest man he was, I believe d him outrightly and decided that Nancy should take extra care of her safety by not going out on her own till we see what he was up to.
I was shocked when she accepted to go out on a date with you. The rest is history', Jason said breathing in air with obvious labour.
Alfred now saw the whole picture and anger filled him.
'I could sue this man to court and as a lawyer, I'd make sure he gets the harshest sentence possible'.
'But as a lawyer, no matter how good you are, you cannot charge a person without evidence', Jason said helplessly. 'We did not think to make a recording of his speech because we were caught unawares'.
'Since there is no evidence, we could create one', Alfred said.
'How so?'
'We could make him believe that everything he said when he visited you was recorded and that his visit was recorded in the CCTV footage you had installed. He would say and do some things which we would now record. It will not be easy since he is so criminal minded but it is a chance we have to take.
First we shall have to go to his house to speak to him and you will introduce me as your legal adviser but tell me where does he live?'
'London!'
'Then how did he know Nancy was here and with you?'
'He saw the picture of the both of us dancing at the end of year party and decided to visit me'.
'Hmmmm, it is now falling into place.
He must have seen what he could not see that day that the both of them were in love and that had aroused his jealousy and he decided that he wanted Nancy back'. Alfred thought to himself. That was the logical explanation.
'From what you have said, he may be doing this without his wife or her family's knowledge. If we can threaten him enough to frighten him, there may be no need to go to court'.
Jason nodded. Seeing his point of view and thinking that it just might work.
'
