Phoebe told everyone that she wanted to go home for some clothes as well as check out some things. She promised to be back the next day.

'The Christmas celebration is over and you can go back permanently. When I am ready for the test, I shall call you and then we shall go and get a second opinion like you have agreed to.

It hurt Phoebe, what Jason was doing. His lack of attention to her and his inability to hide it.

Sally stared at her brother in shock but her husband forbade her with gestures from saying anything.

Phoebe made no comment as she got her things together and left for her house and she hoped to a Romeo that needed her and was eagerly waiting for her.

'Jason, I had thought you were a real gentleman but the way you treat Phoebe is beyond tolerable'.

'Please Sally. This is my affair. I am aware that you have my interest at heart but you seem not to see that I do not live Phoebe. The person I love is Nancy'.

'Nancy!' Sally concluded simultaneously with her brother. 'I have nothing against her. In fact she is a good enough girl and if not for the fact that she is pregnant with someone else's child, I would have no objections but the fact is that she is and Phoebe is carrying your baby and that makes her a better candidate for your affections'. She explained. She had also explained all these to her husband while Rodney was speaking to Jason and Nancy. That was while the children played themselves to sleep.

Chris her husband did not agree with his wife but he knew better than to voice his disagreement. He did not want to antagonize her, at least not during this festive season.

'And how sure are you that the baby Phoebe is carrying isine? Why do I feel in my guts that the baby is not mine? I do not feel any connection with it at all'.

'That is because you have not allowed yourself to get close to her. If you are not close to someone, how would you feel connected to them?'

'I know that Nancy's baby isn't mine and yet I feel connected to it'.

'My point exactly. You go close to Nancy and that straightens the connection but it is not the same with Phoebe and that is why there is no connection

I feel sorry for the poor girl', Sally said.

'Why did she suddenly find out that she was pregnant just when I told her that I was no longer interested in having an intimate relationship with her but that we should remain platonic friends?'

Sally was shocked. This was news to her.

'You mean you had asked her for a break before she told you about the pregnancy?'

'Yes. The whole thing seemed doctored including the tests results'.

'But she is really pregnant. I can smell it a mile away. I am a woman afterall and I know these things'.

She might be pregnant but I am sure as day that it is not mine!'

'Because Nancy said so?'

'No! Because I feel so! I have felt it since the first day and that was why I asked Dr. Manuel to preform a pregnancy and paternity tests. If I had no doubts, there would have been no need for the tests.

I was never intimate with her without protection and she told me she was on the pills. So how could a pregnancy result and we had an open relationship, which gave her the liberty to have other sexual partners if she so desired and she did have other partners. Do how come I am the one she chose to be the father of her child?'

Chris was seeing another dimension to all these.

'Did she really agreed to such a relationship with you?' Chris asked

'Yes she did and I saw her with her numerous partners as well and I had other partners besides her' Jason said.

'Snd she never complained? She was happy with the arrangement?'

'Of course. She never gave me any cause to suspect that she was not. Though Nancy says that she had threatened her on more than two occasions to leave me alone and stay within her limits'.

Chris burst into laughter.

'You can never understand women. They are a puzzle.She was okay with the arrangement when she saw that you treated other women the same way you treated her, with no plans of committing to them but she sensed your continual attachment to Nancy. Women know these things. She noticed that you feel differently towards Nancy and she felt that while the others were no threats, Nancy was a threat to her eventually changing your mind to have a lasting relationship with her.

She may have intentionally allowed herself get pregnant to force you into marriage. The child may or may not be yours but the fact remains that once the both of you got married, she will not allow you go away from her.

She might either be in love with you or obsessed with having you for herself.

Sally told me about a contract marriage. If you are not interested in making it a real one, forget it because she will not give you a divorce. From what I have read of her character, she is just enduring this just till she gets what she wants and then she will show you the stuff she is really made of', Chris said and laughed some more. He could see the situation clearly. He had not studied psychology in the university fir nothing.

Sally could not utter a word. She stood and started at both men, not believing what she was hearing. But her faith in Phoebe was shaken. Could what the men said be true? Especially what her husband said. He was very good at reading people. Was he right this time as well or wrong? He had just met Phoebe and he had drawn these conclusion just moments after meeting her?
