Chapter 73: Chapter 73
Chapter 75 Invitation letter
After he called Sarah, John drove directly back to Elliot's family home. He knew he had to face the person behind the upcoming engagement party.
His mother was talking on the phone with a friend about the happiness she felt with having a daughter-in-law. John heard laughter as he entered the door. The laughter stung his eyes.
When she saw that John came back, she hung up immediately and said thoughtfully, "Why did you came back? Don't you need to be in the company this afternoon?"
John did not answer, he went straight in front of his mother and suddenly put the invitation on the table. He asked angrily, "Mom, what does this mean?"
When Ms. Elliot saw the red invitation, her face changed, confusion as well as agitation was very visible on her eyes and her facial muscles became stiff. Ms. Elliot tried to keep a calm tone, "My and Sarah's parents agreed that the two of you would be engaged next month. If you wanted to do it later, I'll be the one to send all the invitations."
"Is that up to you?" John smiled faintly. "What about me and Sarah? Why did no one ask for our opinion? Sarah made it clear to her mother that she didn't want to get engaged yet. Her mother confirmed personally that she would not force her, but now, my own mother did not comply with the agreement and secretly pushed through with the engagement. You did not respect me and Sarah at all."
She was disappointed with John's attitude, with the flames burning in her chest, her indomitable voice resonated. "Didn't we gave the two of you a month's preparation? You are just confused whether you wanted to get married or not. After your engagement, you can continue to get to know each other and improve your relationship. We, as parents just wanted to do what is good for our children."
"Mother, your decision of not asking for our opinion will only make us feel stressed and afraid of marriage." John is out of breath.
"That is just an excuse! In the past, my marriage was decided by your grandparents, so we found it difficult to develop feelings for each other, could not fall in love as freely as the two of you but we still lived a happy life. Your reaction is like that because you're still longing for that woman who once had a husband, right? Why are you so obsessed with her?" Mrs. Elliot roared.
"This issue is between me and you together with Sarah. Don't bring another person in." John roared. "Can you stop blaming her for all your sins? You're so unfair!"
"Okay, I will not mention her again. As long as you continue the engagement party next month, I won't mention her anymore."
John looked at her helplessly and emphasized word for word. "I and Sarah will not continue our engagement next month, I strongly advise you to take back all the invitations you sent as soon as possible. Otherwise, both families will become a laughingstock. "
With that, he turned and left the house, as the door closed behind him, he heard Mrs. Elliot's scream.
Ms. Elliot watched helplessly as the door closed, she would not let the engagement party be cancelled, let alone make herself a laughingstock.
Meanwhile, Elly returned to the hotel before she came to Hargreaves's house. Alex did not force her to live in Hargreaves' house. She came to work at Hargreaves company every day and her life became monotonous as a worker.
Once, Elly accidentally met John. He was standing by the side of the road and leaning against a tree trunk, looking at her hotel room.
Elly panicked, she hurriedly picked up her cell phone and called to ask his reason why he was outside her hotel room.
"We broke up already, do not do this." Elly said. She turned off the lights and closed the curtains.
This incident happened continuously. Every day, when she come home and turn on the lights at her room, she would see John outside and he will wait until it was almost dawn.
John didn't call her and he didn't go home because he doesn't want to interrupt her rest. He had not solved the problem on his engagement yet. That made him feel guilt. He did not dare to face Elly. He feared that once she discovered about his engagement to Sarah, she would persuade him to accept his mother's arrangement.
The next day, as soon as Elly got off work, she received a phone call from Ms. Elliot for an appointment.
"Have dinner with me, I have something for you." Ms. Elliot stated the address of the restaurant coldly and hung up the phone.
Elly did not have any idea what she wanted to give her but she did not refuse on her invitation.
She went to the restaurant according to the address given to her and Mrs. Elliot arrived ten minutes later.
She sat opposite to Elly, the first thing she did was to pass Elly the menu. "Are you sure you don't want to eat dinner? Order what you like."
Ms. Elliot was rarely this generous to her, and Elly, suspicious of her motives, refused with a polite smile. "No, Auntie, I'm not hungry."
Ms. Elliot nodded when she refused to order food. "I'm not sure about your taste, I do not know what you want to eat. If the problem is this place, we will order somewhere else."
Elly smiled and chose to be silent.
After they ordered the last course, Ms. Elliot paid for their dinner. She smiled and said, "This is the second time you and I have sat down and talked. Last time we had coffee at the Elliot family home and this time we ate out." There was a slight tremble on her voice.
Do you remember the content of that conversation?" Mrs. Elliot was sarcastic she did not give her a chance to answer the question. "I remember you pretended to be alright, only took the plane ticket, left the bank card and firmly agreed leave our home. Then, you came back again after a few days!"
"You broke your promise." Ms. Elliot gave her a contemptuous look.
Elly bowed her head and sat down in shame. She had a reason, but she can't explain it. Ms. Elliot was telling the truth and she can't deny it.
The waiter arrived with the last course and that seemed to eliminate the awkward atmosphere.
"After dinner, I'd like to ask you a favor. I hope you can do it this time."
Elly can't believe that one day, Ms. Elliot will need her help. Elly felt uncomfortable with Ms. Elliot's insult and was not in the mood for a meal. The delicate and delicious food in front of her do not have taste at all.
Ms. Elliot put down her chopsticks and was satisfied with Elly's anxious face. The food in front of Elly was still intact. When she saw that Elly was struggling, she felt comfort.
"Before I ask for your help, I'd like to share this good news with you."
Under Elly's suspicious eyes, an invitation was pushed in front of her. When Elly picked up the invitation and read John and Sarah's engagement, she felt that her heart wasn't hurt, she was only surprised.
She said calmly, "Congratulations, auntie!"
Mrs. Elliot looked at her face and searched for pain in her expression. She narrowed her suspicious eyes and asked, " Did you really gave up?"
She already broke up with John. Elly was not afraid as she looked straight to Mrs. Elliot.
"For the past three years, you held onto my son for his wealth. Now that you saw another opportunity, someone who has more money, you immediately lost your 'feelings' for my stupid son." Mrs. Elliot's words were cynical and insulting.
Elly remained silent at the harsh words.
"Alex has always been too pitiful, you will be thrown away sooner or later, because the money bag has been hollowed out."
When she heard Ms. Elliot mention Alexis, she said calmly. "I've been working all day. If you will just scold me, I refuse to remain here. In the past three years, I have endured all of your hurtful words, I had enough. Now, I want to go home to take a shower and then go to bed."
Ms. Elliot trembled with anger and took several breaths to get herself sober, back to her goal. Her voice was cold when she said, "You came to my son because of money, but he really fell in love with you. I hope you can help me and convince him to give up his feelings for you.
"Tell me what you want me to do and I'll do everything I can to help you out."
"I personally arranged John's engagement and I don't want to fail for any reason. Sarah is the only girl worthy of my son."
Now, Elly no longer like John but those words still made her sad. It turned out that in the past three years, all the efforts she exerted were not appreciated by Ms. Elliot.
Elly doesn't understand what Ms. Elliot meant. She arranged John's engagement. What does she have to worry about?
"Don't pretend that you do not know, you know my son very well."
Like Ms. Elliot, she felt that it was not easy for John to follow other people's arrangements. "Let me get this straight, what exactly do you want me to do?"
"I sent an invitation to Boss Hagreaves. I want you and him to witness John and Sarah's engagement party." Ms. Elliot gazed into Elly's eyes with an evil and arrogant smile. "You promised me that you will leave my son last time and you did not do it. You can use this opportunity to fulfill your promise. From now on, I don't want you to get in touch with John again."
"I'll be there." Elly answered without hesitation. She stood up, picked up the invitation and smiled softly. "You gave me the invitation personally, how could I refuse? On that day, I will come to congratulate you!"
