Chapter 48: Chapter 48
Chapter 50: The break up
They catch each other's eyes, Elly's completely astonished. "Aren't you going with your friends, John?" She turns to that beautiful woman, trying to remain as calm as possible.
Sarah stares at John and sees another woman with a three-year-old child. She simply thinks that that's just an old friend of John and politely introduces herself. "Hi, I'm Sarah Olsen. Mrs. Elliot has set this meeting up for me and John. Are you his friend?"
"Mrs. Elliot? A meeting?" Elly frowns and keeps asking. "So this is some sort of a date?"
Sarah smiles and looks at John. "Mrs. Elliot wants us to spend more time together."
John can't deny all this in front of Sarah, she's a woman after all.
Elly feels disappointed at his suspicious attitude. She knows this is orchestrated by Mrs. Elliot but his silence rubs more salt on her wound. She looks at him right into his eyes. "Sorry for interrupting your date."
She storms out and takes Kitten with her. John wants to stop her but Sarah pulls him back. She sounds quite upset. "Where are you going, John? You want to leave me here? Alone?"
"I'm sorry! I will explain when I get back." Then off he goes.
Looking at how hurried John is, Sarah definitely isn't happy about that. There must be something between John and that woman.
Kitten has no idea what's going on. "Auntie Elly, we're not eating here?"
"No, we're going to another place with more and better food." Elly tries to hold back the tears as she doesn't want Kitten to see her crying..
But she bursts out into tears when she hears John calling her name.
"Why are you crying, auntie?" Kitten asks her and uses his hands to wipe her tears.
Elly is aware that she's starting to lose control so she stops to take a breath. That gives John a chance to catch up with her, he's clearly upset about what happened. "Why are you going with this kid? Where is Alex?"
"Are you interrogating me?" Elly tries not to cry, she's even more frustrated when John tries to change the topic.
John senses it and quickly denies "No, I'm just surprised."
Elly smiles at him. "Surprised? You surprised me! You're already engaged, why are you going with Sarah Olsen?"
Elly memorizes her name even though she just introduced herself once.
"My mom set it up without telling me." He explains.
"Since when do you obey your mom, John?" Elly gets even more distant. "You could refuse to go on that date, couldn't you? But I think you're perfect for each other."
She snickers. "You go to see your girlfriend then who am I? Who am I to you, John?"
"You're my lover, my beyonce, the only person I love in this world."
"But you went to see some other girl, you hurt me." Elly cries louder.
"Elly..." John doesn't know what to do in this situation, he tries to hug her.
Suddenly Kitten hits his hands. He tries to protect Elly. "Don't touch auntie Elly. You made her cry, you're a bad person!"
"It's alright, Kitten! Let's go." She puts him down and they walk past John.
John grabs her arm but she turns back and yells at him.
"Let me go!" She tries to get out of his grasp but John is too strong. Suddenly another hand holds him back.
"Mr. Elliot, you're disturbing her.".
"Dad!" Kitten is so happy to see his hero and runs straight to Alex.
John struggles to get out of Alex's grasp, giving Elly a chance to escape.
Elly doesn't expect Alex to save him but she still hides behind his back and tries to avoid John.
Alex holds Kitten and looks at John, despising. "I hear you are a very pious son, Mr. Elliot. But I can't believe you still accept arranged marriage in this era. Respectable!"
It turns out Alex heard everything they said. Elly doesn't want him to say anything too offensive.
"You'd better get back to that beautiful girl, don't ruin your own date." Alex keeps mocking and taunting him. He turns to Elly. "Let's go."
"Elly, come back." John shouts.
"You want to stay and watch your fiance dating another woman or you want to come with us?" Alex asks Elly again.
"Let's go." Elly answers with such determination.
John wants to chase after them but his mother's voice flinches him. He doesn't want anything to happen to Elly.
Sarah is still waiting for him when he gets back to the restaurant. She smiles at him.
"You're back. I order these dishes myself, I hope you like them." Her voice is so mild and she avoids mentioning that incident.
John is quite surprised by her action. He doesn't want to be rude to her, a good, smart, gentle and delicate woman.
He stays and has lunch with Sarah but he can't get Elly off his mind.
Elly goes with Alex to the parking lot. He gently opens the car door for her but Elly refuses. "Sorry, I want to be alone."
"You want to go back in there?"
"No." She sounds quite sorrowful. "I just want to go somewhere quiet. I'm not that stupid to go in there and interrupt their date."
Instead of asking where she's going, he orders his driver to do whatever she says.
The car just goes around the streets without a destination, all of the sudden Elly asks the driver. "Can you take me to the beach please?"
She still remembers when she cried uncontrollably and somehow Alex tracked her down.
She feels better there, with the soothing sound of the waves. She believes this place can purify one's heart.
The discord between John and his mother, then John freezing his bank account, all because of her. That date is an excellent reminder for her that Mrs. Elliot will do everything she can to get in their way.
Elly thinks about breaking up with John. He has sacrificed so much for her. She closes her eyes and tries to face the chaos inside of her. Then she comes to a decision: she will break up with John.
As painful as it is, she takes out her phone and dials his phone number, without any hesitation.
John picks up the phone immediately "Where are you, Elly? I explained to Sarah, we aren't..."
"I want to break up with you, John." She interrupts. She wants to do it as quickly as possible because she knows that she won't be able to do it if she procrastinates.
"What did you just say?" John can't believe in his ears.
"Let's break up!"
"Why?" John loses control and gets hysterical. "Because of what happened today? Please hear me out, let me explain..."
"No, not that, it's because of me." Elly interrupts him again, she's surprisingly calm. "I feel tired when I'm with you, I don't want this forbidden love. We should stop here, John."
She hangs up and doesn't give her a chance to say anything. Her face is covered in tears. "I won't drag you down anymore, John."
