Chapter 150: Chapter 150
Chapter 152: Emily's Amnesia
Alex was surprised by Brandon's request. "Why would he need to borrow Gerald?" Alex wondered.
"What's the reason for your request?"
"It's just a business trip to the United States for a few days. Doesn't Gerald know all kinds of languages? I want to take him with me. My assistant is so stupid. I want to get some hard work done." As Brandon spoke, he went to the middle of the room and sat down calmly.
After hearing the reason, Alex could not help but laugh. "Why? Are you starting to hate your assistant? Do you want me to assign someone else?"
"Can you just ask Gerald to come with me? I have never seen anyone as capable as him. Under him, he trains a lot of assistants, and your work will certainly not be affected."
Alex felt a little proud to hear Brandon affirm the strength of the old secretary. Gerald has been with him for so many years and is used to seeing the reality of the business environment, where big fish eat small fish. Alex knew Gerald is much better than Brandon's new assistant who recently joined the company.
"Okay, you can arrange your schedule. I don't think there's anything unusual about borrowing a secretary for the benefit of the company."
Coincidentally, there was a knock at the office door and Gerald came in with a pile of papers in his hand. He did not see Brandon sitting in the middle of the room, and went straight to Alex's desk. He placed the papers in front of him, "This is the document you needed to sign today."
Without waiting for Alex to reply, Gerald reprimanded directly, "This is the third computer in two days, sir."
Familiar with the nagging of Gerald, Alex did not even read the documents. Covering his coughing mouth with his hand and reciting a reminder, "Mr. Brandon is here, too. He has something to tell you."
Gerald blinked as if he had only now recognized the third person in the room.
He turned and smiled politely and asked in a low voice, "I'm sorry, I didn't see you. What does Mr. Brandon want to talk about?"
"This." Brandon licked his lips and scratched his nose in the face of Gerald's curious eyes. "I'll let Mr. Hargreaves tell it better."
Gerald looked helplessly at Brandon's attitude, becoming more confused as he was before. He did not speak, still staring at Alex to go on.
"He said that your professional ability can help him on his business trip."
"Mr. Brandon thinks too highly of me." At a glance, Gerald does not show an attitude of jubilation or boredom, and his face is still stiff."
"So, Gerald, what do you mean? If you don't want to go on the trip, no one will force you. I think Brandon is also well aware of this." Alex said fairly.
"Thank you, Mr. Brandon, for your trust, I am deeply honored." Gerald's voice was steadily even, neither friendly nor warm. But after leaving his chairman's office, his face changed and his polite smile disappeared.
Brandon suddenly wanted him to go on a business trip, and Secretary Gerald felt a little hypocritical. Although it was impossible to know what is on Brandon's mind, Gerald is an employee of Alex and did not want to embarrass him. He saw the opportunity as a way to expose the true reasons behind Brandon's request.
In the afternoon, Alex went directly to the hospital after work.
When he arrived at the hospital, Alex called Peter several times, but there was no answer. He had to go to the nurse's counter to ask for Emily's room number.
When he came to the door of the ward, Alex looked at his empty hands and ignored the idea of buying flowers to visit patients. He reached out to knock on the door.
"Come in!" A cold voice came from inside.
Both Peter and Emily looked at the door and recognized Alex as he recognized them. Peter turned his head and greeted him with both serious and unhappy face.
Emily looked directly at Alex with empty eyes and a dull expression, so that people could not understand her thoughts.
"What are you doing here? Why don't you go seduce your woman?"
Walking to the hospital bed as Peter asked the questions, Alex knew that he blamed him for bringing Elly into the situation. He pulled a chair next to Peter.
"Saying goodbye to a sick person, didn't even bring her flowers? Peter nagged endlessly, but they were all worthless.
Alex asked Peter questions of concern. "How did the doctor say she got hurt?"
"Thanks for asking! She was saved." Peter's strange sound rang out with a thick sour tone.
Alex was not offended. He knew how he felt. If the person lying in the hospital bed was Elly, his attitude would be even more terrible.
"Peter, I'm sorry. I didn't know this would happen. I just want her to let go of her hatred."
"There are other things you don't know. Who do you think you are, predicting how things will go?" Peter's attitude was distasteful, but in fact he was only looking after Emily. "You two broke up. Whether her future life is filled with happiness or not, it has nothing to do with you. Whether you arrange or worry, she will not be grateful. Elly is not worth paying the price again and again."
In Peter's analysis, Alex thought that in the eyes of Elly, he was clear about his identity. Because of this, Alex chose to be silent and not defend himself.
Peter saw his stiff attitude, and viewed Alex as a sitting duck. A vulnerable, anxious, weak little duck.
"Anyway, it's my responsibility. If I didn't put her in this situation, Emily wouldn't have gotten hurt. I will bear all the medical expenses. Don't refuse."
Peter looked at Alex. There was no resentment, but anger.
"If you really want to apologize sincerely, make sure that woman doesn't see Emily again."
Emily said nothing during the quarrel between the two men. When Alex left, there was a lonely look in her eyes, leaving Peter with a voice of reproach.
"Tell him it was out of kindness. Why did you say so many nasty things?" Emily finally spoke out.
"What? Do you feel sorry for that guy?"
Peter's jealous tone surprised Emily.
When she thought about it, she slapped him and laid back on the bed with a blanket over her head, disregarding the hit.
"You don't have to defend Alex. You are angry because all his efforts have been given to an unworthy person, and not you." There was no response to Peter's exclamation, and the ward was completely quiet.
Within a week, Emily almost recovered both her body and mind. This time she bet her life and doubled down, but luckily, she won, and the performance was done perfectly in the eyes of the audience.
After repeated examinations, the doctor gave the results: the strong impact stimulated Emily's brainpower, she was clear-headed and her intelligence returned to the normal state of an adult. However, her memory disappeared. If actively treated, it will recover soon.
At first, when he heard the news, Alex was full of doubts. He did not believe Peter's words and suspected that Emily used amnesia to plot a new devious plan.
But Peter went to see Alex at work with a high reserve of initiative and honor even though he hated him, so his doubts were dispelled at once.
Emily made a 180-degree change. She was as pure as a rabbit, timid as a young girl. When she saw Alex, she hid behind Peter and looked away with a naive look.
"Emily, this is my good friend, Alex. You know each other, but because of your amnesia, it may seem strange."
Emily looked at Peter, received his encouraging nod, held out her hand hesitantly and whispered, "Hello, I'm Emily."
Alex did not recover from his surprise and with his eagle eyes, he gave a sharp look. Emily was frightened, withdrew her hand and retreated to Peter. Her hand secretly pulled the corner of his shirt, as if she were calling for help.
"Emily has just recovered from the Intensive Care Unit. I don't want her to stay at home alone. You know my job has me working day in and day out. I only trust you, brother. Can you arrange a column position for her? In this way, she can get in touch with more people, feel better, and maybe slowly help her remember everything."
Alex still had a connection in his heart to Emily, and hoped to keep her by his side for personal control. So, according to Peter's unreasonable request, Alex dialed the number of his company's Human Resources. "There's a new employee candidate in our hiring pool. Come to my room to arrange a suitable position."
The head of the Personnel department came in. Alex told Emily that an available management position would be suitable, and important in order to reduce unnecessary trouble. Peter was very satisfied with this arrangement. He and the head of the Personnel department took Emily out to get familiarized with her new working environment.
Alex sat in the middle of the office, meditating and processing what just happened. All of a sudden, his thoughts of Emily's intentions weren't clear. Although Peter was probably just being a brother to her, Alex couldn't dispel his doubts.
He dialed a number on his cellphone.
