Chapter 151: Chapter 151

Chapter 153: Gerald's Accident

The news that Emily now works at Hargreaves Company reached Elly, and she was more convinced that something was wrong.

"Isn't she crazy? Why would an insane person go to work?"

"Calm down, Leila! Don't panic now, let me gather information from the company, and just don't do anything." Aaron kept discouraging Elly. He was worried about her urgent uneasiness.

"I can't just stand by! I will go to the Operations department in the name of cooperative advertising. Her secretary sorted out the necessary materials. Elly ignored Aaron's suggestions and decided to go to Alex's company to investigate in person.

Coincidentally, she met Emily as soon as she got out of the company elevator. Emily stood in front of her, as Elly recognized her as a whole new person. In her eyes, there was no intrigue or jealousy, only a simple and friendly smile. Emily tilted her head, "Hello!"

Elly looked down at her, stared at her innocent face and frowned, "What game are you playing now?"

"What are you talking about? I don't understand." Emily was in a daze. "Isn't this the first time we've met?"

Elly attempted to view suspicion in Emily's eyes, but failed. She was stunned. Emily got into the elevator and the door closed.

After the strange encounter, Emily went straight to Alex's office. He was surprised at her sudden appearance. "Why are you here? Is there anything urgent that you haven't informed me of?"

"You have secrets you're hiding, I'm afraid?" Elly smiled, deliberately asking for a reaction.

In a flash, there was a strange fear in Alex's eyes, which he denied. "Want to know what my secret is? I could have..."

Before Alex finished his sentence, Elly cut him off. She brought up the matter deliberately and calmly, trying to give him a chance to admit it on his own initiative.

Without an answer, her voice became more and more unpleasant. "Things don't feel right. I couldn't believe what I heard, and couldn't believe who I saw. You understand what I mean, right?"

Alex knew what she meant and knew that there had to be more truth behind the recent matters. Elly regained her mature composure.

"Although she looks normal, Emily lost her memory and does not remember what she had done in the past or what kind of person she was."

"So, you took care of her and hired her to your company?" Elly said in a sarcastic manner.

"No, it's not what it looks like. Peter was asking for help. It was inconvenient for him to work around the clock to care for Emily, so he asked me to arrange a place for her in this company." Alex did not give the real reason for agreeing to help Peter.

As he explained the whole process, she listened calmly with a smile and forged a sentence. "You don't have to explain too much to me, we're just business partners."

Elly's smile was very unusual. It wasn't angry, just tiresome with a chilling color. Alex was blank and didn't know what to say, so he instinctively called out her name.

"Elly..."

"Please call me Leila." Elly interrupted. The man in front of her gave reminders of a person who she never wanted to come back to.

She reported the budget of her advertising plan to Alex in an unemotional tone. "Here is my budget report. If you have time, take a look and give me feedback in advance. I won't disturb your work."

With her forward hand on the exit's doorknob, Elly suddenly remembered something and turned to tell Alex an announcement.

"Considering what you said the other day, I've been thinking a lot. My life should not go on with hatred. I'm tiring myself out. Emily accepted punishment. She hit her head against the wall and was damn near suicidal. That was some kind of punishment for killing John that I had to accept. I think such retribution is enough."

Elly's words, like thunder, scared Alex to death.

She walked out of the room confidently and walked around staring intently. Over time, she regained her mind, and her smile slowly blossomed from the corners of her mouth.

No matter who was right or wrong, Elly was finally glad to let go of her hatred.

After Elly came out of Alex's office, she was in no hurry to leave the building. She asked an old colleague about Emily's office. According to her findings, Elly knew that Emily had been assigned as head of a department. Her job description was also related to the joint advertising program of the Hargreaves Company.

Knock on wood, Elly ran into Emily once again.

Seeing Elly, Emily's eyes were full of surprise and bewilderment. "What a surprise! Are you a colleague of the company?"

In Emily's eyes, Elly was just someone she had barely met in the elevator, so her identity was unknown.

Elly smiled and gave her a business card. "Here is my phone number. My company and I are discussing collaboration projects, and there will be a lot of negotiations between us. It's a pleasure to formally meet you."

Emily blinked for two seconds and nodded happily to Elly's offering. "It's a pleasure."

It happened so fast that the two didn't have a chance to stop and breathe.

Elly and Emily were now actually friends, and there was no conflict between them. This made a considerable impact on Alex's outlook.

"I think this is the most ridiculous story I have ever heard of."

Even Aaron could not find Elly's purpose.

He asked cautiously. "Are you sure you won't fall for her madness? Even if you believe that Emily has amnesia, you don't need to be friends with her."

Elly shook her head and giggled. Her smile was unexpectedly real.

"Everything happens for a reason. Don't worry! I am treating Emily in the most human way possible."

Everything seems to be harmonious and calm, but all good things come to an end.

Alex received a phone call from Brandon. His whole body felt like it was struck by lightning, and his head exploded from the terrible news. Gerald was in an accident.

Hearing the news, too, Elly was so shocked that she almost fell off her feet. Fortunately, Aaron caught her body in time.

"Why are you affected by this?"

"No, it's different." Elly shook her head, breathing became difficult, as it was running out.

"He's not like everyone else. He is the same as you. Since I started in the Operations department for work, he taught professional knowledge in the workplace. He dutifully told me not to hold back, helped me a lot and took care of things. If it wasn't for Gerald relieving the pressure off the ruthless boss that Alex is, I wouldn't live long. This is all just unexpected."

Elly was choked up as she said her words, and she could not speak any more. Her body trembled and pleaded with Aaron. "Look, just book me a ticket to the United States. I want to visit him. I have a bad feeling about all this."

On Alex's side, the situation hasn't improved one bit. On the plane to go see his secretary, his mind went blank and still could not accept the dilemma revolving around Gerald. Apart from the work of their superiors, the two are closer to each other than friends. It was the most pain he felt since Elly disappeared for over a year.

After getting off the plane, Alex rushed to the hospital and stood outside the glass of the Intensive Care Unit, watching Gerald unconsciously plugged into a ventilator with many other tubes and wires in his body.

Brandon stood beside him with his head down, his eyes red and tired, and his voice seemed to be on the verge of crying. "Alex, I'm sorry, it's all my fault. If Gerald didn't save me, he would not have suffered such serious consequences. He wasn't supposed to be in there. It was supposed to be me."

Brandon was emotional, and the expression of guilt was clearly visible on his face. Alex didn't seem to hear all the voices around him, and having a cold expression towards Brandon wouldn't fit the mood of the situation.

Alex stared at the accumulated machines in the room and at the data running on the screen. His head was full of thoughts, and then became empty, as if he had nothing to think about.

After a period of silence, Alex avoided being speechless and let his voice be heard.

"Because Gerald chose to save you, you should live for him."

According to Brandon, an advertisement billboard suddenly fell where they were walking, and Gerald was the first to see it. He pushed Brandon out of the way, before the heavy objects made impact.

Brandon spent time waiting in a mood of self-remorse, and Alex stopped trying to persuade him otherwise. The two men were camped outside the ICU room, praying that Gerald could overcome the difficult accident.

The next day, the doctor announced terrible news. Secretary Gerald may never wake up again. His brain was hit so hard that all his nerves were damaged, and his future life would be bedridden. His vegetative state must rely on machines to maintain nutrition and overall living.

This is the news that Elly heard right when she arrived from her long trip to the hospital. The mental shock was so huge that without Aaron standing beside her waist and back, she might have fallen to the ground.

Alex was sitting at the door of the ward. When he saw Elly beside Aaron, there was a trace of disbelief in his eyes. Then he bowed his eyes and said nothing. He was silent as Gerald was being attended to by a few nurses.

Aaron patted Elly on the back in a gentle voice. "You want to come in and see him? Gerald can't hear what other people are saying. Wait look, there's Alex. You still want to go in, though? I'm afraid it will be more uncomfortable if you do."

Elly did not answer back, her original dull eyes suddenly fleeting away, realizing that Brandon was also standing in the hall.

Breathlessly, she let out the sweltering air from her chest, pushed Aaron's hand away, and went straight to Brandon. "Why are you still here? Why don't you let innocent people like Gerald rest easy? What is your purpose?"

The news she received about Gerald's accident explained that he was on a business trip with Brandon. Elly doesn't believe the two-faced man.

"Shut it!" At some point, Alex walked out of the room and loudly stopped her from speaking.

Elly turned around and moved her sights between Alex and Brandon as if they were murderers. A disdainful voice shouted. "Did you two plan this? Is this your plot? Alex, Secretary Gerald has followed you for so many years. You should have an answer for all this. Why'd you let Gerald suffer like this!"

"It was an accident, Gerald saved me. That's what he did...because I was careless." Brandon hasn't stopped blaming himself for the past few days, explaining it like a soulless robot.

"I don't believe it was an accident!" Elly glared at him again, panting. "If it was an accident, why aren't you hurt, Brandon? Why weren't you the victim?"

Her words were fierce and one-sided, and Alex hurriedly stopped the attacking. He didn't want to make a scene for people around, misunderstanding her mistaken words.

"No one wanted this to happen. Gerald saved Brandon with his life, and you don't think he's not blaming himself for this? Don't tell me that!"

Criticized by Alex and knowing how evil he is, Elly wanted to yell. But, when she saw Aaron's eyes, she swallowed her comebacks. Pushing Alex out of the way, Elly stepped in the room.

"I hope there's truth in what you said."

Brandon looked pale and kept repeating what he had said a hundred times in the past few days, "Sorry, I'm so sorry."

Brandon was no longer as arrogant and cold as usual. His mind was depressed. Even his body language was depressed.

Alex shook his head without doubt, with no blame in his eyes and comforted by patting Brandon on the shoulder comfortably.
