Chapter 149: Chapter 149
Chapter 151: Unanswered Questions
Elly shook her head, her eyes became perplexed, and after a moment of silence, she said slowly. "Blank stares. Insanity, confusion, bewilderment."
"What?" Aaron didn't understand her.
"She doesn't recognize me anymore. When I approached, she thought I wanted to hit or hurt her, so she slammed her head against the wall several times."
Elly gave a detailed account of what happened, but she was still confused since she could not tell what was true or false. "So far, she has been taken to the emergency room and her condition is not known. I am not sure whether I'm right about all this or not, but Emily's reaction was very strong and determined."
Elly's voice did not disappear or stutter, but the thought of all the blood still frightened her.
After a few seconds in shock from what he heard, Aaron expressed his doubts. "Did she deliberately do all that in front of me to convince you that there was something wrong with her mentally? Listen here, the medical examination form of the hospital is very easy to forge, and as long as you have the money, you can even buy off the doctor. No one really proved that Emily had a brain problem."
Elly once thought the same way, but Emily's radical behavior was so real that what happened right in front of her almost dispelled her doubts.
"You mean she really wanted to gamble with her life? In just a few minutes, how would someone set up the scene like that so quickly? I saw a lot of blood coming out. The head is one of the most critical parts for human beings. There was so much blood flowed from the banging and slamming."
Aaron was becoming unsettled, so he interrupted. "Many of the things that were witnessed are not necessarily true and Emily was likely forced to take action. You think it was Alex or Peter who forced Emily to do so? I mean, who knows if it's true? Let's just go to the hospital."
With skepticism, Elly went to the hospital together in accordance with Aaron's idea.
Aaron asked the nurse on duty, who was behind a counter. "It says here that Emily Russel has been referred to the normal ward. How is she doing?"
Aaron did it politely as if he were asking for advice.
The nurse smiled back professionally. "I'm sorry, I don't know much about her, but you can ask the doctor who treated her upon arrival."
Aaron expressed his gratitude and then dragged Elly to see the specific doctor in person. Elly found it difficult to understand, but she still followed him silently.
The doctor who treated Emily was about 50 years old, with long silk hair and a stern face. Even though she looked so serious, little did they know that the doctor had such a gentle voice.
"Who would have thought that young people in this era would have so much psychological pressure. I advised the family to take the patient to a psychiatrist. If the family members avoided to solve this problem as soon as possible, I am afraid there would have been more self-harm. Her concussions are mild, but be careful with how you approach her. Any other questions?"
Elly was about to follow up and ask, but she was quickly interrupted by Aaron.
"Okay, let's follow through with what the doctor told us. Let's go see her." Aaron winked at Elly. They respectfully thanked the doctor for her help and then left the room.
Once the door was closed, Elly blurted out her frustration. "Why didn't you let me ask her more? I think the doctor would've helped us understand the situation even more, and we could've helped, too."
Aaron sighed and looked at Elly, then proceeded to knock on her forehead.
"Do you have brain problems, too? That doctor is a medical practitioner from the Emergency Room, not a psychiatrist. How would they have known that Emily had any mental illness if she had a concussion? Someone else must have told them."
Hearing his analysis, Elly was taken aback, "You mean they bribed the doctor? Is that even possible?
Anyone can offer a high price to buy confidential medical information? Anyone can offer a high price? Elly repeated her last questions in disgust, but Aaron refused to answer.
"If you continue to ask questions, you'll just be shocked by the cold hard truth. We can go to the ward and search for some real answers. You alright with that?"
Elly nodded, hoping to find answers as soon as possible.
Aaron was halfway correct when it came to his assumptions. The doctor was not bribed, but in front of her face, Peter particularly stressed that Emily was dealing with too much psychological pressure, leading to her suicidal acts on the wall.
When Elly and Aaron arrived at the psychiatrist's office in the hospital, instead of entering the room, they just stood at the door. They were listening carefully to figure out what was going on inside, but the soundproof wall was way too good. The room was too quiet to hear anything at all, which made the two a little disappointed.
"It's not a good idea for us to stand here." Elly was losing her patience little by little.
When she knocked on the door and there was no answer, she gently opened it and got a small glimpse through the cracks. Before she could see the room vividly, Elly heard a low voice coming from behind.
"What are you doing here?"
Elly stiffened as soon as she heard the sound, and her expression turned from caution to shyness. She turned to look at Aaron, but he was caught off guard too and was not attentive. They both looked guilty in front of the low voice, Peter.
"We're here to see how she's doing." Elly spoke for the two.
Peter looked at Aaron next to him and said coldly to Elly, "See her? Why? you want to see Emily die?"
Elly stood silent while Peter continued.
"I'm sorry to disappoint you. Emily would surely become more dangerous because of your hypocritical concerns." Peter's voice was full of dissatisfaction, and his eyes were disgusted from what he saw.
Aaron, standing in front of Elly, exuded as much momentum as Peter. "What's with your attitude? Why would you tell her that? Emily is either dead or suffering from what happened to her."
"Who the hell are you?" Peter turned his eyes between the two, and began to grin at the corners of his mouth.
"Wow, you are really good Elly. There are always stupid people around, willing to stand up for you. People like you were never worth Alex's feelings through the years."
"Shut up! Do people like you even know about my relationship with Alex?" Elly was defensive.
"I don't need to know. What I know is that Alex's feelings are always misunderstood. He is just infatuated with unsuitable people, falling in love with the unworthy. When it comes down to making a decision, a picky person like you, doesn't take advantage of being loved and worshipped by others." Peter couldn't help but stare directly at Elly, as his calm voice said each word punctually.
His harsh comments were like hundreds of thousands of needles into her heart. Her face was pale, her hands clasped the spirit in her subconscious. People always thought that she's the one victimizing Alex and that she was not worthy of his feelings. Peter thought it and Emily did, too. It turns out that in their relationship, Alex was the victim.
Did she really deserve Alex's cruel treatment because of a loveless marriage?
Recalling the loneliness and gloomy torment of being a wife, she was out of breath and the amount of sadness could not be vented. Elly's gray and shameful face was restless.
When Aaron saw that she was insulted, he threw a forceful punch at Peter, but it was dodged. Peter turned and swept his legs to trip Aaron, but only hit the wall.
When a nurse passed by, she saw, what she assumed, was a patient's family making trouble and came forward to scold them. "Hey! If you all are going to cause trouble and not maintain order in this hospital, please leave."
The big fuss freed Elly from further insult. She hurriedly took Aaron by the hand as she pleaded. "Come on, come on. Let's just go." A few simple words, and the last of her energy was exhausted.
Aaron didn't want to embarrass her. He nodded, put his arms around her waist carefully, and glared at Peter. Aaron knew that the true unworthy person was Alexis Hargreaves.
Elly didn't remember how they left the hospital, but she sat safely in the car. She couldn't help but cry.
Negative thoughts clouded her mind. "Why does everyone think I feel guilty about his feelings? My true feelings were trampled on by him, was it worth being stepped on? In that marriage, I lived a shameful life. Was I just treated like a dog? Obviously, he carefully planned everything out, but, was what he did right? Was I wrong? I only deserved to be a pawn in his hands. Do I deserve everything?"
Elly cried bitterly. She was upset and felt guilty. Because she was constantly denied, her emotions were depressed for too long and needed to be expressed. She leaned back in the chair, her hands stretched out and covered her eyes to suppress most of the pain on her face, and allowed tears to roll down. A cynical laugh gushed from her throat.
"This is ridiculous, isn't it? The sinner is always me, who gives them the right to judge me?"
Aaron did not coax, not a word of comfort. He knew Elly was exhausted and had to vent out to move on.
She cried for a lengthy time, until she was so sleepy that she twisted into a fetal position. Even while dreaming, her eyebrows frowned uncomfortably.
Looking at her face wet with tears, Aaron dried it carefully and murmured softly, "Even if it were the end of the world, I'll always be by your side."
Back at the Hargreaves Company, Alex threw his material on the table and yelled at the man who bowed his head in front of him. "Is this the result of your investigation within a month? What's the use of these useless things?"
The subordinate was afraid to bow his head, with his spine jolting with fear as he answered trembling, "The surveillance center, there are blind spot cameras. Two cameras have lost the signal, and it has been a year. We couldn't find the people present at that time or check where there were difficulties."
Alex roared and was enraged by the subordinate's debriefing. The computer on his desk was thrown to the floor by Alex, a spark was broken by the dragging of wires. He sat in a high-end leather chair with a ferocious expression clearly visible on his face. "If you couldn't answer my simple questions, how do I expect you to find the answer to my problems?"
Seeing that Alex was as cold as a knife, the subordinate felt that he was going to die. He tried to overcome the gloomy fit of rage.
"Y..Yes, sir. Please give me more time. I must submit the best results as required."
Alex did not respond. The subordinate gave him a good sign and told him what he wanted to hear. He picked up the materials dropped on the ground and quickly zoomed out of the office.
Walking out of the room in a hurry, the subordinate ran into Brandon passing by, "I'm sorry, sir!"
"What happened? You look like you've just seen a ghost." Brandon was surprised by the panic of his colleague, and glanced at the information in the document. He guessed at once what had just happened.
The subordinate just shook his head, smiled hard and stumbled away.
Standing in front of the office for a while, Brandon's eyes narrowed in preparation. As soon as he opened the door and came in, his face regained his usual calm.
"So, what's the update on the investigation." Brandon looked at the broken computer on the floor and snickered at the sight of it.
Alex didn't reply and only looked impatient.
Brandon followed up and asked, "Can I borrow Secretary Gerald for a few days?"
