Chapter 40: Chapter 40
ANGELIQUE SLOAN’S POV
The two of us utilized the elevator to head up to Gabriela’s office. The other employees were all staring at Greyson, which somehow made me feel uncomfortable. However, Greyson suddenly placed his hand on my shoulder. “Can you please give space for her in the corner? We’re heading up to the 19th floor,” he said at the same time that they stepped away. “And stop giving me those sticky gazes; it’s disrespectful to my wife,” he added.
After a few minutes, the elevator doors opened as the bell rang, signaling that we were already at our destination. My expectations were completely different. I thought that there would be luxurious people waiting in the hallway, but there was no one. The path was empty, and only the two of us were creating sounds of our footsteps.
“Why are you still calling me your wife, Greyson? Didn’t we already agree to discontinue the act of being married couples?” I questioned him as we stopped in front of the third door we passed by.
Greyson shrugged. “You seemed annoyed with those employees staring at me, so I said whatever came into mind first.”
I sighed as I twisted the door knob open, then made my way inside his mother’s office. The air conditioner was already open, giving us the leisure to relax while we patiently waited for Gabriela to arrive.
“Did you know that Lian is also here?” I asked out of curiosity, wondering if he had a clue about it. “She didn’t seem like she was one of the workers here though.”
Greyson slightly parted his lips. “I don’t recall Lian having any connection with our business. Maybe she’s here to apply?” he responded with a hint of confusion. It didn’t seem like he was lying, so I just shrugged off the thought that he already knew Lian for years.
It took about three hours before Gabriela went inside her office. She was completely drenched in her own sweat and was still catching her breath. She had her hands on her knees as her back was slightly bent forward. “I-I’m sorry. I didn’t know that my appointment would take this long,” she said before she closed the door.
Gabriela went through her drawers and then brought out two piles of documents. One was inside a red folder, while the other one was white.
“Isn’t this...” Greyson muttered to himself, staring down at the desk where the folders were placed.
“Yes. It’s exactly what you’re thinking, Greyson. Those are the papers that are required to be filled out by whoever is going to be our next Chief Executive Officer and Chief Financial Officer,” Gabriela said, confirming Greyson’s speculations with a nod of her head. “Both of you would be taking up these roles, but of course, you would have to choose who becomes the CEO and CFO,” she added.
I glanced at Greyson. “Once he becomes the CEO, what would happen to his father’s position?” I pointed at him as I turned my attention back to his mother.
“Greg is the chairman; there’s no need for you to worry about him,” Gabriela answered in a flash. “So does that mean that you’ve already made up your mind?”
I picked up the white folder, knowing that it was the one designated for the CFO. “I don’t have any courage to steal his spot right now. I’ve committed a lot of sins to your son and your entire family in a span of a few months. What more if I become the CEO here?” I faked a laugh to avoid making the situation awkward.
“Are you sure, Angelique? This is only a once in a lifetime opportunity. Are you really going to let this slip?” Greyson questioned as he was swaying the red folder in front of me, provoking me. “Wasn’t this your main goal? This was supposed to be the end of your scheme, right?” he added.
I bit my lower lip, looking away. The temptation was eating me inside.
Gabriela slammed Greyson’s shoulder. “I told you, this is a voluntary decision. You can’t force her to get her mind swayed. She already chose to be the CFO, and that’s that,” she muttered. “Fill out those documents within half an hour. I need to get those processed before the end of the day.”
As I was browsing inside the terms of the contract, I saw a highlighted section where it was specified that I mustn’t get involved in any sexual deeds with the CEO, which was Greyson. The moment that I read that, I instantly tilted my head upward to look at Gabriela, who already had her gaze fixated on me.
“What…” I couldn’t continue my query when Gabriela raised her index finger in front of her lips, shushing me.
Confused as I was, I sighed. I guess there’s really no way for me to verify anything with Gabriela until her son is still with us. I took a quick peek at Greyson, and I saw how hard his forehead was scrunched. It was like he also read something similar to what was written on my paper.
It took us only a few minutes apart to submit the documents to Gabriela. “I bet that Greg would be on a rampage once he sees that Greyson finally made a move without being ordered by him,” she giggled.
Since we have nothing else to do inside her office, Greyson already left ahead of me, as if he knew that I wanted to discuss something with his mother.
“What’s with that clause, Gabriela? I won’t believe you if you say that existed before you even heard of what Greyson is doing behind your backs,” I inquired, thinking that Greyson was already far away.
Gabriela gestured to me to take a seat as she did. “Then, I guess I don’t need to give you an answer, Angelique. You can even check my computer for the same file before I got those printed,” she confidently answered.
I sighed. “If you’re going to insist that, then at least tell me why Lian is here,” I coldly said.
She didn’t seem to expect that I knew about Lian’s presence, seeing how she had her eyes widened. Lian might’ve been connected with them much more than I thought.
