Chapter 41: Chapter 41
ANGELIQUE SLOAN’S POV
Now that I think about it, Lian was also the person who brought me closer to my mother once more. She was also the reason why I got to encounter Gwynneth and realized Greyson's relationship with her. There’s something about Lian that’s making me convinced that she might have an underlying connection with either Gabriela or Greg... or maybe Greyson himself.
“Where did you hear about Lian?” Gabriela asked; her voice seemed a bit shaky, or maybe it was just my imagination. “Don’t tell me that Greyson also got her involved in his nightclub?” she added.
I shrugged my shoulders. “I don’t know. I saw her in front of the elevator and felt that she was somehow familiar. When I thought deeply, I remembered her name,” I lied, maintaining a straight face so she wouldn’t sense that I was bluffing. “Is she an employee here?”
Gabriela avoided having eye contact with me, and it took her a couple of seconds before she gave me a response. “She’s not yet one of our employees. I heard that she’s going to be interviewed today. Her employment would solely depend on that.”
I nodded my head, pretending that I believed her. Greyson even said the same thing, so I’m conflicted if they’re just in this together, or that’s just really the situation that Lian was in.
“She has piqued my interest. Is it possible for me to talk with her for a while?” I asked, anticipating that she wouldn't permit me, but she nodded her head once, so I took my leave.
As soon as I rode the elevator down to the ground floor, I hurried to search for Lian’s whereabouts, not knowing where she might be lurking around. I tried to ask the people that I’ve crossed paths with, and none of them saw her as well. When I was about to give up my search for her, I suddenly heard a familiar woman’s voice.
“Angelique?” Lian called me from behind. “I didn’t know that you’re here. Are you also here for the job interview?” she asked with a smile.
The way Lian dressed was kind of informal. Her curvaceous body was still seen through, and she didn’t even bother covering herself with a coat. I assumed that her black hair was neatly done in a salon, seeing how much it shined.
I shook my head as I pointed at the papers she held tightly, as if she was trying to hide it from me. “I just paid Greyson’s mom a visit. How about you? Is that your resume?”
Lian bit her lower lip as she slowly placed her hands behind her. “I still can’t thank you enough for what you’ve done for my father’s sake, but these papers are all confidential files of the company. I’m sorry, I can’t just share anything about it with anyone, even if it’s you,” she answered.
“It’s fine. I was just curious why you were here anyway,” I uttered, laughing.
The two of us went out of the building. I don’t have any idea where Greyson went, so I planned to head straight home, not until a car honked in front of us.
“Seems like your husband can’t let you wander out the street alone, huh?” Lian teased, referring to Greyson as he peeked his head out the window. “Well, let’s talk about something else next time if ever we see each other again,” she mumbled.
I was about to let her be, but Greyson gestured for me to stop Lian. “I think Greyson wants you to come with us.” I sighed, unable to decipher what he intends to do with Lian now.
There was hesitation in Lian’s eyes and the way she rubbed the back of her head. Though in the end, she still gave in and went in the car’s backseat. The aura that surrounded the three of us was kind of awkward.
“Why did you call for me, Greyson?” Lian asked before Greyson managed to start the engine.
Lines formed on my forehead as I heard the way Lian’s tone was altered. “I didn’t know that the two of you were already this close. When we first met, you still addressed me with such honorifics,” I uttered.
Greyson chuckled, turning the keys. “Don’t tell me that you’re getting jealous over someone who called me by my name?”
I hit Greyson’s shoulder. Even though I wanted to hit him as hard as I wanted, I had to suppress myself as we were already in the middle of the street. “It’s just been so long since the two of you last saw each other. It’s making me doubt that the two of you lost contact with one another after you paid for her father’s hospital bills,” I defended myself.
Expecting that Lian would be the one to give me a response, Greyson was the one who stole the spotlight. “What do you want her to call me then? Mr. Giovanni? Wouldn’t that be the same as calling my father?” He rolled his eyes.
The way that he clenched his jaw didn’t escape my eyesight. “You’re getting mad at me over this? I was just kidding around, Greyson,” I grunted.
Lian tapped my shoulder from behind. “If I knew that I’d cause the two of you to argue, I wouldn’t have agreed to come along,” she softly mumbled, looking down.
I clicked my tongue when I somehow felt guilty. “So, what is it that you wanted to tell Lian?” I repeated the same query as her, since I’ve gotten curious as well.
“You were desperate to know why Lian was inside our company’s building, right?” Greyson glanced at me for a second before he took his attention back at the road. “She’s not a mere woman who only wanted to give her resume and get hired. She’s connected to our underground organization,” he explained.
Confused as I was, I glared at Lian, waiting for her to give support to whatever Greyson was saying. “I mentioned that I had confidential files earlier, didn’t I?” She brought them out, handing the papers to me.
The instant that I saw what was written on the very first page, my lips parted in shock.
