Chapter 39: Chapter 39

ANGELIQUE SLOAN’S POV

Greyson made me sleep on his bed last night while he covered himself on the floor, refusing to initiate any kind of conversation with me. I bet that he’s been mentally exhausted all day long, and no one else is to blame other than myself. There’s still an hour left before the afternoon, and Gabriela already called us for lunch. She definitely has something to discuss with us, seeing that she didn’t bother to invite Greg.

“Were you able to sleep well with someone you don’t love, Angelique?” Gabriela asked with a hint of sarcasm as she was serving our dishes on the dining table. “I prepared some beef Wellington; I heard it’s one of your favorites.”

I genuinely smiled at Gabriela. I took a spoonful of the beef and couldn’t help but praise her for how savory it tasted. “If only I knew that my mother-in-law was going to be this great of a cook, I would’ve loved your son with all I’ve got. I wouldn’t care if he ends up tearing my heart into pieces,” I jokingly commented as the three of us began eating.

Gabriela kept on stealing glances at his son. “Why are you so silent, Greyson? Are you still thinking about my husband?” she questioned him. She held the back of his hand, preventing him from eating so that he’d have no reason not to speak.

Greyson nodded as his fists formed into tight balls. “If my father really made up his mind not to make me his heir, then that only means that I’m going to be completely hopeless in the future,” he replied, finally breaking his silence. “I know damn well that I wouldn’t be able to survive and make a living for decades with just that nightclub of mine, especially if women would no longer pay us a visit,” he further explained his thoughts.

His mother chuckled, covering her mouth with her vacant hand. “You’re always worrying about the littlest things, Greyson,” she uttered.

I turned my head around to look at Greyson and I was quite flustered to see that we looked at one another at the exact same time, as if we were both confused with Gabriela’s reaction.

“What are you trying to say, Gabriela?” I asked out of pure curiosity, despite knowing that I might overstep and meddle within their family again.

The tension from yesterday was immediately replaced with calmness. Gabriela shook her head with a grin on her lips. “Nothing much. It’s just that... Greyson is worried about losing his spot in the business, and I find it hilarious since he has no clue that I’m the one who gets to decide who’ll become our heir or heiress,” she explained, causing the two of us to gasp in shock.

I raised my eyebrows with my slightly parted lips. “Then, that means Greyson doesn’t have to worry about being in an argument with Greg, right?”

Gabriela snapped her fingers. “Yes. But, I still wouldn’t make him my heir if he doesn’t act like he wants to be one. I still can’t accept how he used several women for his own satisfaction,” she mumbled, rolling her eyes in frustration.

“Are we going to your building?” Greyson inquired after he finished his meal. “It’s not fair if you’re the only one who gets to decide my fate. I also want to see if there’s something beneficial for me in that business of yours.” He scoffed at the same time that he folded his arms in front of his chest, leaning his back on the stool, acting all high and mighty.

Gabriela nodded her head. We spent a few minutes inside the dining hall to clean up our dishes as I volunteered to wash them all. They waited for me to come outside the house.

“Who’s going to drive?” I asked, waiting for her to give me the keys. It’s been so long since I’ve driven a car, and I can’t contain the excitement that’s building up inside me.

Greyson rolled his eyes as he stole the car keys from his mother. “I know that you want to take those,” he said, hissing as he entered the passenger seat.

Gabriela smiled as she patted my back before she entered the backseat. I couldn’t find any time to complain, so I hurriedly entered the driver’s seat and just asked his mother for directions to their company’s building.

As soon as we arrived at our destination, Greyson got out ahead of me, and he turned around the front of the car just to open the door for me. He even placed his hand above my head to make sure that I wouldn’t bump my head.

“Thanks,” I softly muttered.

I suddenly remembered how caring he was when we were still in high school. Greyson always made sure that he’d keep me safe from any risk of danger. I’m sure that he’s suppressing himself from persuading me to go to the hospital, knowing that there’s a possibility that the wound on my forehead was actually deeper than I imagined.

“Good afternoon!” The people inside the building greeted Gabriela all at once, as if they had been trained to do so, seeing how unified they all were.

“Gabriela! I’ve been waiting for you for hours. Did you forget that we have a scheduled appointment with your—”

“Yeah, yeah, I forgot about it. Zip your mouth before you say anything else that I won’t like.” Gabriela cut the man off, sending him a dismissive wave before she turned to face us. “Sorry, Greyson and Angelique... I need to be somewhere first. It won’t take that long, so you can go ahead upstairs and wait for me in my office. You still remember where it is, right?” she asked her son.

Greyson nodded her head. “Is there something wrong, mom?”

Gabriela shook her head. “It’s nothing important. My secretary is just that strict with me and my schedules,” she replied, which sounded like a lie to me.

I grunted with my furrowed eyebrows. Even if I wanted to interrogate her, I couldn’t delay her from going wherever she needed to be.

As they coped up with their farewells, I caught a glimpse of a familiar woman’s figure, so I hurriedly glanced to my left side. In front of the elevator, I saw Lian.

Why is she here?
