Chapter 18: Chapter 18

ANGELIQUE SLOAN’s POV

“Have you decided what you’re going to do about your parents now, Angelique?” Greyson questioned me the instant that he opened his eyes.

He has been asleep for quite a while now and I was the first one to awaken because of the noise that kept on coming from my own stomach. We were stranded inside his bar and have no other place to go with this pouring rain that’s been going on for weeks now.

His query was based on the recent news that was announced this morning. The detectives have been able to locate the bodies of both my mother and my father, prior to what Greyson told me about my mom. The forensics team was also able to detect some fingerprints on the crime scene, which means that it wouldn’t be long before they would figure out whose fingerprints those were, wherein I might actually be at risk, especially that I’m included in their list of suspects.

“I don’t think that I should worry about anything just yet. They would most probably wait for my damn mother to regain her consciousness since she’s the only one left as the witness. Of course, neglecting the fact that you possess footage,” I answered as I gazed through the window.

If only there was a way for my mom to entirely forget about what I’ve done, then I can rest assured with regard to my safety.

Greyson heaved out a loud sigh of frustration. “Why did you have to experience all of these hardships since you were young? I kinda feel guilty hanging around with you, knowing how I’m living my life peacefully with a golden spoon…” he said, his voice filled with so much pity. “If only we were born of the same family lineage,” he whispered to himself, then quickly avoided making eye contact with me.

I couldn’t stop myself from hitting his shoulder with my tightly clenched fist. “You silly! The heck are you murmuring about? That would make the two of us blood related, and if that actually happened, then we wouldn’t be able to —”

“To what?” Greyson leaned his face closer to mine, which made my mouth shut. “Is there any problem, Angelique?” He smirked.

This guy seriously knows how to ruin the situation. He attempted to stick his lips onto mine, but the weather prevented him from doing so as a deafening thunder paved its way through the insides of the bar.

“Kiddings aside… I still have to figure a way out of this mess that I brought upon myself, right? However, no matter how foolish this may sound, it seems like there’s no way out of this if I’m going to deal with it all by myself.” I gave him a meaningful gaze, hoping that he’d understand what I’m trying to say.

“Basically, you want to rely on me to prevent your mother from telling the police and those detectives anything that would give them the lead and a path to give you a warrant of arrest.

I nodded my head. “That’s right. But first, we need to find out which hospital she’s in.”

***

In the evening of the same day, Greyson and I agreed to conduct the search separately. I didn’t even notice that just after a few weeks of our meeting, I turned out to involve him with my family matters. Once all of this gets resolved, we’d be able to return to our normal states of our lives. We’ll face the outside world and engage in a society that pressures all of the adults to work and reach the people and the government’s satisfaction, despite exceeding one's own limits.

"Sorry to bother. May I ask if Mrs. Sloan is admitted here?" I directly inquired to the one assigned at the front desk of the nearest hospital from where Greyson and I were staying.

"Ah, a pleasant day to you, miss. May I know what is the relationship between you and the person that you're looking for? This is just for verification and precautionary purposes, there are a lot of people out there who pretend to know most of our patients. I'd be glad if you can cooperate with us," the woman said, as if she was really suspicious of my identity.

Of course they would suspect me. My face was covered with a mask and I made sure to wear Greyson's sunglasses to avoid any unnecessary contact with the police or the detectives. I still have to be careful with my course of actions here since the security's tight here.

"I'm her daughter, Angelique Sloan," I truthfully answered, considering how it's useless to lie in front of someone who's presented with numerous data about their patients' lives.

It only took a minute for her to search up my name. When I saw how her face brightened up, I knew right there that my identity was confirmed.

"Your mother is currently isolated in the eleventh floor of the hospital's other building. She's inside Room #07. If there's someone standing guard by the door, just inform them that you're here to visit your mother; I'll receive the notice then I'll approve your visit," she informed me.

I simply gave her my thanks as a token of appreciation before I went out of the first building.

Right when I was on the way to Building B, I saw Greyson in its parking lot. I stretched my arm upwards as I waved at him, in an attempt to gain his attention.

But, I wasn't noticed at all.

I figured that he might've poor eyesight, so I decided to run towards him. "Hey." I tapped his shoulder, and that's when he turned to face me.

"Since when have you been standing there?" Greyson glanced the other way where there were cars being driven out of the place.

I raised a brow. "Are you purposely ignoring me?" I stomped one of my feet, then slightly punched his forearm.

"Whatever. Did you find that mother of mine?" I questioned him to change the current topic of our conversation which kept him silent.

"Greyson!" I yelled out to his ear, making him step back. "You've been spacing out since earlier. What's the matter with you?"

He let out a deep sigh. "Your mother... is not here."
