Chapter 19: Chapter 19

ANGELIQUE SLOAN's POV

Moments of silence occurred between Greyson and I right after I heard what he said. I was confused whether I should believe what he said or have doubts, considering how that woman from earlier told me that my mother's inside the other building.

"Are you sure? Did you already search thoroughly inside or ask some of the employees there?" I inquired, in hopes that he would simply nod his head as a response.

However, Greyson walked ahead of me, returning to the place where I first was. "Let's go home. We haven't eaten a single meal yet, and besides, I'm already getting exhausted," he said, totally ignoring the question that I had.

As much as I didn't want to disobey his order, I stood still in the same spot where he left me. "You can go first. I still have to double check here in case that you missed a spot," I said with a straight face so that he could sense that I wasn't kidding around.

I noticed how he furrowed his brows. "Don't you trust me, Angelique?" he asked with a tone that signifies how dismayed he's dismayed.

"T-that's not it, Greyson. I just wanted to verify if she's not in this other building. It's not like there's some sort of restriction that prohibits two people from searching for the same person on the same day," I quickly replied as some sort of assurance for him not to feel betrayed.

Once I've made up my mind with something, I'd definitely make sure that I'd get it done. And with that said, I gracefully turned around to go to the entrance of Building B.

"Wait." Greyson held my wrist as he tried to stop me from taking any step further. "Wait for me, Angelique. I'll come with you. Don't you even think of coming back to my side with a tear on your face as if I didn't attempt to get you away from this place," he continued what he's been meaning to say.

Greyson's eyes glistened, though there wasn't any aura from it that normally influenced me to feel his warmth. His large hand released its grip on my wrist at the same time that he slowly intertwined his fingers on mine. This small action of his was sufficient to disregard what I thought a few seconds ago. The way that he gently caressed this tiny hand of mine made me smile, even so, I was still uneasy because of the words that Greyson stated.

Compared to the first building of the hospital, this second one gave more chills to my spine. It didn't seem like they welcome just any person inside, whether it's a patient or simply a visitor.

"Hi. I came from the other building and was told to redirect here. We came to visit my mother, Mrs. Sloan. I'm her daughter, Angelique Sloan," I introduced myself, then pointed to the man beside me. "And this is my... husband. He came to visit his mother-in-law since he's worried sick for her as well," I mumbled with a troubled mind.

I wonder if Greyson actually cared if I kept on calling him as my husband even though we're not yet married for good. But I guess, it's not an issue for him since he didn't even react to what I said.

"Excuse me... Didn't you hear what I said?" I asked when none of the workers gave me a reply.

But then again, they browsed the documents that they were holding while some were occupied with encodings as if I wasn't around.

I sensed Greyson slightly pressing my hand, so I glanced in his direction. "They've been like this since I came here. They'll treat you like thin air, and they wouldn't even mind if you roam around the entire building," he informed me, which brought me up to the idea to head upstairs.

"If that's the case, then..." I gestured to him to follow me, and I only needed to pull him with me for him to walk in the same track as I did.

Right after we entered the elevator, I pressed the button that would lead us to the eleventh floor. The whole ride was peaceful. And as soon as the doors opened, I hurried to find the seventh room. Unlike what I was told, there wasn't any guard standing by.

In fact, it was only Greyson and I who were present in the corridor of the eleventh floor. I gulped when I perceived the continuous beat of my speeding heart, thinking that we're inside a horror movie.

"What are you hesitating for, Angelique? Didn't you come here with the determination to find your mother?" Greyson suddenly spoke, which disrupted the destructive thoughts in my head. "Are you already satisfied with the fact that you've read her name written on this signboard? Don't you need to get in and see for yourself if it's really your mother that's lying on the hospital bed?" he consecutively asked.

He's right. We're only a step away from finding the whereabouts of my mother, and yet here I am, still wondering if I should continue what we've planned. "S-sorry. Can you be the one to open this door for me? I don't think that I'm prepared to see her yet..." I took a step sideways to give him some space.

"Whatever." Greyson held the doorknob, then pushed the door open.

I thought that he would be the first one to enter the room, but he stayed in the same spot. The insides were still dark, so I tried to find the light switch on the walls.

"W-weird..." I mumbled to myself when I felt something sticky on my fingers right after pressing the switch, which didn't even make the lights turn on. "There's something wrong with this place, really..."

"What do you mean?" Greyson attempted to turn on the lights as well, but just like earlier, nothing occurred.

I made up my mind to just head over to the bed despite the dim scenery. "Let me borrow your phone for a while." I removed his hand that was holding onto mine to lend my palm to him where he placed his phone. I instantly turned its flashlight on...

Which I wish I didn't even do.
