Chapter 172: Chapter 172
"THIS IS getting boring, System," Yejun said coldly. "How long do you plan to make me watch my Wonhee cry while bleeding?"
He had been standing on top of the block of ice for quite some time now.
And, yes, he still couldn’t move an inch. Nᴇw novel chapters are publɪshed on novel⁂fire.net
Yejun didn’t mind watching Wonhee— no matter what her age was— all day. But not when she was crying while coughing up blood. He hated seeing her in pain.
Hence, he couldn’t stand it anymore.
[I need to snap out of the System’s control.]
Of course, the most effective way to do that was to hurt himself physically in order to come to his senses.
Hence, he summoned all the resolve he had.
Soon, his ice daggers came out and hit him everywhere— in the arms, legs, and even stomach. But, of course, he made sure he wouldn’t hit his vital organs. He bled all over as a result. However, it was worth it since he could finally move.
[HUNTER HWANG YEJUN, YOU’RE REALLY CRAZY!]
[No, it’s the talking orange.]
"Don’t you already know that I’m crazy?" Yejun asked while moving his shoulders. His body became stiff after being ’frozen’ for hours. "Is this one of the ’scenarios’ that Gong Yool wrote in his diaries?"
Because he clearly remembered opening one of Gong Yool’s diaries before his consciousness awakened in that strange world.
[More like someone else’s memories.]
And now that Yejun has come to his senses, everything in that ’world’ stopped.
The older Wonhee was frozen while in the middle of punching the ice wall.
Yejun jumped from the top of the huge block of ice and approached the older Wonhee. "Let me see your hands for a moment, Wonhee-ya."
But when he tried to touch the older Wonhee, her body turned into pixels.
And when he removed his hand from her, she returned to ’normal.’
[Everything here is only a piece of data.]
"Is this the future?"
"This is both the future and the past."
As expected, he met the talking orange— in his human form.
"This is both the future and the past?" Yejun asked, and then he paused for a moment while his brain was working hard. "Gong Yool said he knew the future of our world because he read it from a BL novel. But I heard the older Wonhee say that she needed the Hwang Frost of this world to wake up and reset the world."
He could understand why Gong Yool would think he saw the ’future’ through the BL novel that he apparently read.
However, the word ’reset’ meant one thing.
It wasn’t that hard to connect the dots after that.
"The ’BL novel’ that Gong Yool had read before getting transmigrated here was the world before it was reset," Yool said, nodding. He was confident in his conclusion because he was also confident in his brain. "And the current world is the world after the reset."
And the people responsible for the ’reset...’
He turned to the frozen older Wonhee and wondered out loud.
"Wonhee doesn’t remember anything after the reset."
"That’s right— and the System deems it’s important that Chu Wonhee doesn’t remember the previous world."
Yejun turned to the talking orange and raised an eyebrow. "It strikes me that the System doesn’t remember the previous world either. If the System remembers everything, then you would have eliminated the enemies already."
"Again, you’re right," the talking orange said while nodding his head. "The System’s actions mostly depend on Chu Wonhee’s personal feelings. If Chu Wonhee hates a certain Awakened Person, we punish them. And if Chu Wonhee favors a certain Awakened Person strongly, we reward them."
"Because you were hoping that the Awakened People Chu Wonhee hated were villains, while the people she favored were the heroes of the previous world."
"I hate that you’re smart."
Yejun just grinned. "Why don’t you just reveal the content of Gong Yool’s diaries without sending him back to his world? You know Chu Wonhee would never sacrifice her best friend even if it’s for the greater good. She’s not that generous."
"If we could, we would have done that," the talking orange said, sighing. "But after the reset, the central part of the System was affected by a virus. Unfortunately, it was the part where the huge chunk of the memories from the previous world were stored."
"You don’t have a backup?"
"Ong Yool is the System’s back-up."
"That’s Gong Yool’s original name," the talking orange said. "After the reset, it appears that the System sent Gong Yool to a different universe with the memories of the previous world."
"Then it’s possible that Gong Yool has mistaken the memories of the previous world as a novel," Yejun said, crossing his arms over his chest. "Wonhee said that Gong Yool’s memories were jumbled when he arrived here. But instead of his entire body, only his soul was sent back to this world. That’s probably why he doesn’t remember everything."
"So, we need Gong Yool to return to his original body in order to restore the part of the System that holds the memories of the previous world."
"But why does Gong Yool think that the main characters of the ’novel’ were Graham and Ahn Kisoo?"
"The System isn’t sure, but I can try to explain."
"Nah, never mind. I’m not that curious about that part," Yejun said, pausing for a moment before he asked another question. "Why is Wonhee not allowed to remember all of this?"
"Because Chu Wonhee will hate herself once she does."
"Because the System had to sacrifice so many lives just to give Chu Wonhee all the luck that she has— both now and then."
"Wonhee is already suffering from survivor’s guilt just for living well during the apocalypse," Yejun said, sighing while shaking his head. "I understand why the System has to hide this from her, even though I haven’t heard the whole story about the sacrifices you mentioned earlier."
"Chu Wonhee will remember about the previous world once Gong Yool returns to his original body."
"Wonhee will never allow that unless you ensure Gong Yool’s safety and survival."
The talking orange avoided Yejun’s gaze as if he was ashamed. "We don’t have access to the other world."
"What kind of world is that anyway?"
"A parallel universe— a world free from Cracks and dungeon monsters."
"If it’s a parallel universe, then is there a Chu Wonhee there?"
"Chu Wonhee is a special existence born under the Lucky Star— you can say she’s ’made’ only for this world."
"That’s the same case for people like you," the talking orange said. "Those who are born to save a certain world can’t have a ’different version’ in a parallel universe. It’s so that you don’t have to share your fortune, blessings, power, and even fate with your different versions."
"In short, we are unique because we need to be ’perfect.’"
"Correct. That’s why none of you was chosen to ’Transfer’ the date of this world to the other world."
"On the other hand, Gong Yool who has a different version in a parallel universe was the perfect person to do the job."
"Again— correct," the talking orange confirmed. "Unfortunately, since Ong Yool has to share his fate and fortune with Gong Yool, he failed to become the perfect ’storage’ for the previous world’s memories."
Yejun touched his chin while thinking.
And then a light bulb suddenly lit up.
"The original Ong Yool’s body contains all the memories from the previous world," Yejun said, tilting his head to one side. "Then why don’t we bring that guy here instead of sending Ong Yool’s soul back to his original body?"
"Hey, it already failed," the talking orange complained. "The System wanted to bring back Ong Yool here. But it’s difficult, so we only managed to bring his soul here."
"I’m telling you to try it again."
"The System tried to bring Ong Yool here when Wonhee hadn’t awakened yet. Maybe it will be different now that Wonhee has awakened. Her luck affects everyone she cares about positively, so we may be able to bring back Ong Yool’s body here this time."
"You haven’t thought of doing that?"
Yejun clicked his tongue while shaking his head. "This is why I’m the main character here."
"You’re not the main character."
"If the previous world was a novel, then the main character would be Hunter Song Moonho."
"Song Moonho became the strongest Hunter in the world during the second apocalypse," the talking orange said. "He protected Korea from the World Rankers who wanted to invade the country, and then he united all the Awakened People who could still fight in order to take down the Virus."
Yejun blinked, surprised. "How about me?"
"Can’t you see that you’re trapped in that block of ice?"
"The Hwang Yejun of this world was useless," Yejun said, frustrated. "Hey, talking orange. Can you bring me back to my reality now? I hate it here."
"No, not yet," the talking orange. "The System has something more to tell you, Hunter Hwang Yejun."
WONHEE’s love for Soobin and Semi was unconditional.
However, right at this moment, she couldn’t help but get mad at her older siblings.
It all started after Yool revealed his secret to Graham, Semi, Soobin, and Geon. After all, those people needed to know the truth as well.
[That includes the fact that Yool has to sacrifice himself.]
And Wonhee’s older siblings wanted her to sacrifice Yool to gain the information that they needed.
[I know I’m being stubborn, but...]
"Oppa, Unnie, I won’t do that," Wonhee said firmly while having a private conversation with her older siblings in her bedroom. "I won’t send Yool back to his original world without knowing whether he’ll survive or not."
"Hee-ya, the System won’t suggest that if Gong Yool will be in danger," Soobin said carefully. "The Virus might attack any time again."
"Your oppa is right, Hee-ya," Semi added. "You said Gong Yool was willing to do it anyway."
"The answer is still ’no.’"
"We just want to know how we can protect you better."
"Why, Oppa? Is it because you and Semi Unnie will receive more rewards from the System if you take care of me well?"
Soobin and Semi looked shocked by her bitter resentments.
"That’s right, Oppa, Unnie. I know it all," Wonhee said bitterly. "I know that you love me, but I also know that you gain rewards from the System the more you love me. So, even if I don’t want to, I can’t help but wonder." She smiled sadly at her older siblings. "How much of your love for me is genuine?"
