Chapter 44: Chapter 44

Karen's POV

"Are you going to take a taxi or a bus?" He asked me as we reached the main road where Cars could drive freely.

"I don't think that should be your business." I answered rudely as I stopped a bus. I smiled at Mr Smith as I swipe my bus pass.

"It's been long since I saw you." He said as I shuffled towards the back of the bus with Brody who just stared blankly at us.

I smiled cheekily. "I just came back to Los Angeles yesterday, I'm sorry you haven't seen me for a long time." I replied as I took a seat in the back. Brody hesitated at first, he didn't want to stay far from me so he sat near me.

"Alright," Mr Smith murmured and he pulled back into traffic.

"Is that your boyfriend?" He suddenly asked and I frowned.

"He's not."

I stole a glance at Brody, he just kept on smiling, he made me feel like I wasn't even important.

"You didn't have to be rude earlier." Brody said.

I blew out a long breath and turned to him briskly. "What I want to do is none of your business."

His lush lips quivered slightly. "If you don't want me to follow you, I could come down the bed and go back to your mom's house."

"You can come down from the car if you want to. I won't stop you." I replied with a smirk on my face.

He scoffed. "You're always angry, what can I do to please you? I'm even confused." He muttered angrily.

I ignored him and the bus came to a stop in front of a big warehouse. "Thanks Mr Alvin." I thanked him as I climbed off the bus and waited for him to get up the bus.

He waved to Mr Smith as he drove off. "He's a handsome old man." He muttered.

"And inquisitive. I hate people who ask a lot of questions and make me feel like I'm nothing." I said.

He countered with a frown. "No one makes you feel like nothing, everyone loves you."

I bit my lips with uncertainty. "I don't know, maybe they're just pretending to love me."

He let out a little sigh and I sat down on the ground watching the cars and taxi trod the road. He also joined me sitting down near me. "What are you thinking of? I could help you."

Mom wanted me to tell him the truth but I couldn't, I knew he would hate me if I told him that I had deceived him from the start.

"I'm miserable." I suddenly muttered with tears in my eyes.

He quickly offered me a serviette. I chuckled and threw it on the floor. "What am I supposed to do with that?" I asked him.

"Wipe your tears with that." He answered jokingly. I could sense the humor in his voice.

"You stole my mom's serviette?" I asked him as I stood up.

He stammered. "Yeah.... just two." He answered and I chuckled.

"You're such a low-key criminal." I murmured.

He smiled at me and I smiled back at him. I can't believe this, I was falling in love with him again no matter how hard I tried to hide my feelings or make him leave. I suddenly hugged him as soon as he stood up.

I didn't want to think about anything else again but him. "Brody, please forgive me but I want to tell you something." I said as soon as I freed myself from his grip.

He looked at me with a grin on his face. "What's that?" He inquired as his lips curved into a taunting smile.

This was the moment of truth. I had to tell him the truth now. "I am..."

A loud car honk behind me interrupted our conversation and I turned back to see one of Mr Albert workers leaving the warehouse. "C'mon, we have to look for Mr Albert." I suddenly shouted and ran into the warehouse.

"Are you sure he is here?" Brody asked from behind me panting heavily.

"Why are you breathing heavily?"

A smile plastered on his face. "You won't understand but I can't run, I hate anything that would stress me."

We walked into Mr Albert's small office. There was absolutely no one in the office. Brody entered the office with a sigh. "There's no one here." He muttered.

I nodded and searched for Mr Albert's phone number on his table, he could have written it on a paper or a book. "I'm looking for his number."

"Number? What will you do with it?" He suddenly asked and I found it on the wall. His phone number was boldly written on the wall.

"That's his number, let's call him." I suggested.

Brody shot me an annoyed look. "Call him? I'm not with my phone."

"I'm also not with my phone."

"You have a phone?" He asked, sarcastically.

"Yes, I don't use it. It's switched off permanently." I answered.

Our conversation was interrupted by a noise outside and we rushed out of the office only for us to meet the door of the warehouse closed.

Someone had locked us inside. I ran towards the door and screamed but no one even came. "No one's going to hear us." He told me gently.

"How could they lock us in here?"

He shrugged. "I don't think it's intentional, they must have felt no one was in here."

"Look, Mr Albert has the key and I don't think he would be back soon. I can't be stuck with you for a whole night."

"We'll scale through it."

"Not me." I replied and went to look for a big rod. Brody stopped me at once because he knew I wanted to try breaking down the door. He stood in front of me and I looked at him, I was still holding the rod. "Leave my sight." I ordered.

He got hold of the rod and threw it away into a dusty corner of the warehouse. "Karen, you can't possibly break down his warehouse because you don't want to be stuck with me." He said.

"You have no idea."

He countered abruptly. "This is not right."

I sat down on the floor weak and exhausted. The worst thing I ever wished for was to be stuck in a warehouse with Brody, my husband.

"What did you want to tell me outside before we got interrupted by a car honk?" He asked and my heart raced.
