Chapter 40: Chapter 40

Davina couldn't remember the last time she set foot into this mansion. Probably, the day Amaira passed away. After that, she lost all reason to visit this mansion.

Her gaze circulated around. Not many things had changed in this mansion. The appearance of the house that wasn't much different from the one in Davina's memory evoked memories of the past.

It was, back then, a friendship of four people, herself, Amaira, Danas, and Renata. She went through a beautiful adolescence happily. Until one day, the tragedy happened, and Amaira was gone forever. And Davina and Danas can no longer have a relationship like before. Now, it happened again with her and Danas.

Unconsciously, Davina's eyes became teary. She quickly controlled herself before they fell down her cheeks.

"What's wrong with you?" Jagad's voice broke Davina's reverie.

"What are we doing here?" Davina asked curiously. Ignoring her brother's question just now.

"We'll see." Jagad just smiled without giving a clear answer. Making Davina instantly change her face into a frown. Although curious, she didn't feel any premonition regarding her brother's purpose in inviting her to this place.

Yes, whatever it was, it seemed that her brother had some business with his best friend, Amaira's brother. What that business was, she didn't care.

Davina glanced at the watch on her left wrist. She wondered how long it would take to finish and hoped she wouldn't be late for class. There was an important lecture today, and her design assignment had reached the maximum deadline for submission. He didn't want his efforts in the past few days to be wasted in creating a design that was more spectacular than the previous one.

The large, oversized front door was still the same. It was wide open with tight openings on either side.

The siblings were welcomed in. A young maid escorted them to the living room. Then they met the owner of this magnificent mansion, Melvin, who seemed to be getting ready for work.

The man in the work suit displayed a different charm from the Melvin Davina remembered in the past, when Amaira's brother had not yet become a company CEO. Now he looked more mature and more handsome. Not much different from his own brother, Jagad. Jagad, in his doctor's coat, had a charm of his own that definitely attracted women.

" What's up, bro?" greeted Jagad to his best friend.

"Hi Davina. Long time no see," Melvin replied with a look of astonishment.

Davina smiled in return to the man's greeting.

Jagad, who understood the meaning of the expression shown by Melvin, explained the purpose of his arrival.

"Sorry that we came to your house this early in the morning. I wanted to visit and check on your wife."

"You shouldn't have bothered. She's been well taken care of by the doctor before," Melvin said with spontaneous dislike.

Hearing the words that implied rejection of the attention that Jagad showed did not make the man retreat. He had to keep going to be able to check Danas' condition directly. For some reason, he was not calm if he did not check it himself. Moreover, his real purpose in coming to Melvin's house was to bring his younger brother and his best friend together.

"What? Wife?"

Davina, who was surprised at the new information she had just heard, couldn't help but interrupt the conversation between the two men. It was something she really didn't expect. How could she not, all she knew was that her late best friend's brother was single.

"Please don't joke with me. It's still morning and not my birthday. So it's not time to work on me, brother." He protested to his brother.

However, neither Jagad nor Melvin's faces showed any sign that the news was a joke.

"So... is it true?" asked Davina again to make sure.

"Yes," Melvin replied briefly. As if Davina's surprise was nothing.

Davina glanced with narrowed eyes at Jagad. "Why didn't you ever tell me that Melvin was married?"

"You didn't ask."

Jagad answered his sister's question without looking at the questioner. Instead, his eyes were straight at Melvin. As if demanding further explanation as to why his best friend didn't tell him he was married.

Melvin stared back at Jagad, with a look that pretended not to understand the meaning of the stare. The expression on his face showed that the demand for an explanation from his best friend was not something he was obliged to answer.

Hearing Jagad's answer to her question, Davina suddenly remembered that she also experienced the same thing as her brother. Davina couldn't help but sympathize with her brother who experienced the same thing as her. She understood how disappointed Jagad was at the moment.

Danas, her best friend also didn't tell her that he was married. As if she was nothing. Davina still harbors anger over that.

Then Davina didn't say anything anymore. Her mouth was locked again. Regretting that she had overreacted to the information. Basically, it was none of her business whether Melvin was married or not. Whether he announced his status or hid it, it had nothing to do with her.

"Let's go." Jagad invited Davina to follow his direction.

Instantly Melvin's face hardened, annoyance and dislike suddenly arose from his heart at Jagad's appearance and his purpose for being in his mansion at this time. However, Melvin was quickly able to control himself, not wanting to show an overreaction to this.

Davina just followed where her brother's footsteps led. Jagad walked towards the upper floor. The man led at the front, while Melvin followed behind. Davina couldn't help but feel very awkward at the moment.

If Davina hadn't guessed wrong, weren't they heading to the room where Melvin's wife was? The situation was, Melvin should be the one showing the way.

They arrived in front of a room with the door tightly closed. Not wanting Jagad to act further like the owner of the house, Melvin went straight ahead, turned the doorknob, and entered the room first. Davina entered after Jagad.

From behind the door, the figure of a woman lying on the bed with her eyes closed was seen. Suddenly her eyelids widened, and her heart beat faster. At first, Davina was not sure, but her heart immediately recognized the figure that looked very familiar now.

Davina moved forward to make sure that she was not mistaken. And it was true, she was not mistaken. That's right, the woman who was lying down and seemed to be unconscious was Danas.

"What the hell is this? Why is Danas here?" She turned around, glaring at Jagad and Melvin. Then she scolded the two men standing behind her.

"She's Melvin's wife." Instead of Melvin, the answer to Davina's question came from Jagad.

The man looked calm. Instantly, Davina understood that the purpose of her brother bringing her here was to bring her together with Danas.

"What?" Davina's eyeballs rounded. Surprised to hear that answer. Her brain network which had been disconnected was now reconnected. She realized that they had come to see Melvin's wife, and here was Danas. Which means...

Davina didn't want to believe the answer she had just heard. She glanced at Melvin, looking for signs of denial on the man's expression and face. However, Davina didn't find any. Melvin kept a flat and unremarkable face as if the fact he just found out was nothing.

This sudden revelation hit Davina deeply. Flashes of scenes showing Danas's painful memories caused by Melvin played very quickly in her mind.

Jagad approached Davina, feeling something strange about his sister. He did not expect that the plan to bring her together with Danas would make Davina respond in this way. There seemed to be something far beyond his expectations.

"Davina... what's wrong with you?" asked Jagad, looking worried.

Davina dismissed Jagad's hand. Her eyes were glaring at Melvin. Jagad was shocked, even more astonished, and wondered about what exactly was going on.

"You're ...." Davina's voice sounded shaky. The words were directed at Melvin.

"What exactly did you do to Danas!" roared Davina.

The emotions that had started to build up now exploded like an atomic bomb ready to destroy whatever was around her.

There was no reply or response from the man. Melvin remained unmoved, trying to maintain his composure, although for a moment his heartfelt trepidation at the explosion of anger from the woman who was one of his beloved late sister's best friends.

Jagad could only restrain his sister from lunging forward, seemingly about to launch an attack on Melvin.
