Chapter 179: Chapter 179

Brianna did as Lucien had suggested she do. She slept in her seat while Lucien drove them home. But as usual, Brianna was even more active subconsciously.

“Did your men change their vehicle?” she lazily asked with her eyes half-closed, checking on the mirror to her side of the car.

Lucien heard her words clearly as there was only silence in the car before and after her words were said. He checked on his side mirror. It was already dark, and he could not see to check. Brianna must have noticed the vehicle when they passed by a post lamp. But the next one was still ahead of them.

“I am not aware of such. Why?” he asked gently.

“I don’t think I recognize the car that is behind us,” she answered with her eyes closed again.

Lucien was amazed at how she could even notice such details when he thought she was asleep. He wanted to ask, but he held his tongue from doing so, lest he may sound stupid to Anna again. She might get annoyed by his incompetence in many things despite being the man between the two of them. He himself was feeling frustrated about such fun facts. Lucien cannot imagine how irritating and tiring it would have been for a woman like her.

“Enzo, what car is our security team with me now driving?” Lucien asked over the phone.

Lucien decided to call the person who could give him an accurate answer. It was Enzo. And, as always, this trusted and reliable man did not dally to answer the young Master’s queries.

“They have the same vehicle they would usually drive around to assist you, Young Master,” Enzo replied with certainty. “Is anything wrong?”

The phone call was on speaker. Brianna could clearly hear Enzo speaking his answer to Lucien’s inquiry.

“I am not so sure if I saw the car correctly, but I think the car behind us is not one I have seen your security team has been driving around. It’s dark, though. I might just be mistaken,” Brianna spoke lazily when she noticed Lucien was waiting for her to say something in reaction to what Enzo had said.

“I will send our men to assist you right away,” Enzo stated firmly. “Do you mind letting me know where you are at the moment or where you are going so I can arrange our team?”

Lucien was not surprised at Enzo’s questions. The old Michaelson’s personal assistant had always made Lucien’s safety its top priority. And knowing he might be in danger, Enzo would definitely think and move fast to keep the young Michaelson safe, no matter what.

“We are on the way to my villa from the cemetery,” Lucien replied, unfazed.

“Got it,” Enzo confirmed he understood the situation and assured the young masters of sending their men for additional security.

Then the call ended.

Silence filled the car. Lucien focused on driving while Brianna remained in her position; she slanted the chair, so she was half-sitting and half-lying on the passenger’s side seat. After a while, a call came.

“Hello?” Lucien answered the phone right away to stop the loud sound from bothering Anna in her rest.

“Any last words?” a manly voice asked.

“Wanna ask that question face to face?” Brianna provokingly answered with another question. “If you aren’t even man enough to reveal your voice, I doubt you have the balls and audacity to ask for last words, asshole!”

Lucien chuckled at Brianna’s words. The caller was obviously using a voice changer to conceal his identity. But Brianna was not even fazed to respond with her sassy words and tone.

“Oh, boy,” Lucien snorted. “You’re messing with the wrong people.”

“You’re just lucky you left when you did at the cemetery, you bloody bastards!” the voice replied with evident annoyance. “We were almost this close!”

Unseen to Brianna and Lucien, the man had his index and thumb fingers in a measure less than an inch in front of his face.

“You just lived to die another day,” the caller added.

“You might be right, but too sad to inform you that you won’t be alive to witness that because you’re going to die first!” Brianna spoke in the same provocative tone, making Lucien laugh even more boisterously. “Unless you’re bold and brave enough to do your dirty moves yourself.”

“I don’t have to,” the caller replied defensively. “My money can do the job. I won’t taint my hands with your filthy blood,” he answered with blatant hatred.

“It’s either you are stupid enough to be fooled by people feeding you with false information or fan of someone you used to believe was a respectable person. But you found out he was not who you thought he was in the end,” Brianna responded with a dismissal before she gave Lucien a sign to cut the call.

“What do you mean?” Lucien asked when the caller was out of line.

“I think he is from Terrence Clayton’s camp,” Brianna answered. “He might be a family, a faithful servant, or a political fan, but all in all, this caller seemed to have something to do with whatever happened today,” she elaborated.

Lucien’s face remained unsatisfied that he was not sure how Brianna could say all of those things without even seeing the person. The chance of being right was not off the table, but the sound of certainty in her tone was too impressive to ignore.

They have a lot of possible enemies, after all.

“I have been with you for a few months now,” she took the initiative to enlighten Lucien as he seemed to be asking her in silence.

“Yes, yes, I agree, you have been with me,” Lucien eagerly responded, but his words actually had a different meaning, and Brianna noticed it as his silly smile was visible on his face.

“I have noticed and I am aware of who is targeting you and which ones are after me,” she continued, ignoring Lucien’s playful mien deliberately. “But because we are like shadows to each other as you won’t leave my side as much as you can stick around,” Brianna sneered as she said so. “Those that are after me include you on their hunting lists.”

Lucien’s smile did not fade, it turned even brighter.

“That’s the plan! I believe I am doing the right thing, then, if that is the case as you see so.”

“Foolish!” Brianna squinted her eyes, glaring at the man behind the wheels. But Lucien only grinned even wider, throwing a quick glance at her.

“Take me home!” Brianna ordered, still sounding annoyed.

“Yes, darling!” Lucien snappily answered, the smile on his face never fading.

“I mean to say, to my home, not yours,” she clarified.

Lucien was not fazed. She can order him around wherever she wants to go and he would happily comply.

“As you wish, my love,” he answered sweetly.

“Keep doing that and see what you get in the end,” Brianna warned. She was trying to intimidate Lucien with her cold tone but the man was not bothered even in the slightest. His antics even continued. But he also came to realize he needed to ask Brianna why she suddenly wanted to go to her place, not his, where she had been staying these past few months as they tracked Terrence Clayton and wanted to pull the evil man down.

“Babe..?” Lucien called.

“Hmmm…?” Brianna answered lazily.

“Kidding aside, why so suddenly?” Lucien cleared his throat and asked with seriousness.

“We already have the man I am after in the hands of the authorities and the government will judge him accordingly,” she answered with nonchalance. “I guess, I should stay in my place. I wanna feel at home where I can connect with my parents through the things they left behind for me to spend some time with.”

Lucien nodded. He understood her point.

“I see,” he answered. He wanted to ask if he could stay for the night, but he also thought maybe she wanted to be alone with her mom and dad. The cemetery was too cold to stay for long, at least, at home she would be in the comfort and safety of her own abode. Remembering the place they just left and what the caller said earlier, about leaving the place caused them safety, he mindlessly spoke his thoughts.

“I didn’t notice anything,” Lucien murmured.

“We were busy. Or I was busy ranting while you were so attentively listening, you couldn’t have noticed anything,” Brianna answered.

“Did you?” Lucien asked, his voice was full of disbelief.

“Nope,” Brianna replied without a stutter. “And I didn’t care, to be honest. But I don’t think they were competent enough to attack, because if they were pros, they could have taken us down from a distance with two clear shots.”

“But what could have happened with the team watching over our safety?” Lucien curiously asked.
