Chapter 8: Chapter 8
"I messed up." Was all I could think of the moment the word orphanage left my lips. I might not have said anything, but any smart person would make out what I wanted to say and Michael looked smart enough.
"What if he never wants to see me again." I said, after I told Comfort what went on.
"You just said he asked you to meet him tomorrow." She pointed out.
"I'm assuming he didn't make out that I wanted to say orphanage." I told her.
"He looks smart enough from what you told me and enough of that, I'm happy you didn't turn down these free plates of hot pepper soup." She said as she saw the content of the bag Michael had given me.
"I was tempted to,but I figured out it was going to be pepper soup and I haven't had it in a while." I murmured.
"Now you're talking, my ghost would have hunted you if it found out you turned down this bowl of heaven on earth." She said.
We both liked pepper soup, but she was on a whole different level.
"Do you think I should go?" I asked.
"Of course, first you have to thank him for this super delicious pepper soup and you said you enjoyed talking to him huh?" She asked.
"Yes,it didn't seem like I was talking to him for the first time." I told her.
"And you want to throw that away for just the thought that he might have heard that you stayed in the orphanage?" She asked again, but I didn't answer.
"I thought as much. Look I'm sure he knows but he still wants to meet you doesn't he?" I didn't understand the question.
"How sure are you that he knows?" I asked her.
"What was it he said after the 'almost slip' you talked about?" She asked her own question, totally ignoring mine.
"Something along the lines of you don't have to talk about it if you don't want to." I told her.
"And you're telling me he doesn't know? Think again." She said, before going back to the pepper soup.
When we were done, she told me David asked after me when she came in alone but she just told him I went to do something important. Because of how tired I am,I slept off as soon as my back touched the bed.
"Rise and shine beautiful." Comfort said happily the next morning.
"Why are you active this morning?" I groaned.
"I'm not sure, but it has something to do with the fact that there's no work today." She said, and I could tell exactly how she felt.
"I'm happy too,you have no idea." I said, before we heard knock on the door.
"Who's that?" We asked, but my guess is David.
"It's David." The voice said and I wasn't surprised.
"David good morning." I said when I opened the door.
"Hope you slept well?" He asked.
"I did, what of you?" I asked and he nodded.
"You didn't come back with Comfort yesterday so I wanted to check on you." He said, and I smiled at how nice he is.
"I'm fine thank you." I said after making sure I am okay,he gave me the nylon he is holding and I'm sure it contained breakfast.
"Thank you so much." I said as he left but he just waved it off.
"I bet it's beans and bread." Comfort said and she wasn't wrong.
"It is." I said and she was up from the bed. Without brushing our teeths,we descended on the food.
"When did my life turn to this?" I thought.
"I think we should get a phone, even if it's a small one because I think we're the only ones without one." Comfort suggested suddenly.
"I agree, but maybe we should get one first then after we collect our salary for this month." I reasoned.
"Yes,I was worried you wouldn't agree." She said.
"Michael asked for my number but I couldn't give him, it was embarrassing when I said I didn't have a phone." I told her.
"I feel your pain." She said.
After eating,we managed to wash our clothes since we both did not have time during the day. When we were done,we slept again and the time when I had to meet Michael was drawing closer by the minute and I could feel my heart rate increasing.
"Calm down and stop pacing." Comfort said.
"Let's cook something, I'm already hungry and you're less busy." She suggested and I agreed too because I am a bit hungry too.
"I think David is falling for you." She said as we brought out the things we needed for cooking rice.
"No, he's just been a good neighbor." I disagreed.
"You're really naive." She said.
I didn't bother arguing because there wasn't any reason to. Whether he likes me or not, there is no future for any relationship at this point in my life and not that I didn't want one,I just wasn't ready for the stress that came with it.
In no time,we were done cooking and it was already six o'clock leaving one hour till I had to meet Michael and now I am surprisingly looking forward to it. I quickly went to have my bath because of all my sweat as the room was very hot.
"Is this what you want to wear?" Comfort asked, looking at the jean trouser and blouse I was putting on.
"Yes,is anything wrong with it?" I asked, not getting the reason she was looking at me as if I looked like a masquerade.
"This is practically a date and you're wearing that? Where did I go wrong with you." She asked.
She is being her normal dramatic self but I wasn't going to pay attention to her because it is evening already, why do I have to dress fancy? I didn't have the clothes even if I wanted to.
"It's already evening Comfort and there's no need to doll up." I said.
"Ok,I get but at least change the blouse." She begged, and I agreed since she isn't asking me to change everything.
"This is better." She said as I wore the new top I bought the last time we went to the market and it had just tiny hands.
"Are you sure I look okay?" I asked, since we didn't have the luxury of owning a mirror.
"You look beautiful like always." She answered.
"Thank you."
"Now run along before it is late." She said, and she's right,it is ten minutes till seven.
"See you when I get back." I told her.
"I wouldn't mind a repeat of yesterday." She said and I laughed at her because if she thinks I'm going to ask for it, she'd dial a wrong number.
"Are you going out?" David asked, immediately I stepped out of our room.
"Uhm...yes,I have to meet a friend." I said, and the thought that he likes me didn't sit well with me.
"Okay, but I was thinking we could hang out today." He said.
"Sorry, but maybe next time." I told him and he smiled.
I had spent five minutes talking to David and I was left with another five.
"I hope he is actually waiting for me." I thought as I increased my steps.
I got to the place Michael said he was going to wait for me,but there was no sign of him anywhere. I knew he'd figure it out and wouldn't want to talk to me again,I should have just stayed home and hung out with David.
Just as I was about to leave,I heard my name and I knew it was him so I first heaved a sigh of relief before turning to face him.
"I hope this goes well." I thought.
