Chapter 105: Chapter 105

RUBY.

Watching Toby leave felt painful, watching him hurt was worse. How Yasmin could be keeping a secret like this and still boldly lie to the public was beyond me. I got dragged by her fans after her interview, only a few reasonable people saw that as I was the one who was married to the man,it counted for something. I'd been called a homewrecker, man snatcher, whore and everything in between because of her lies.

Now that I had the ammunition to pay her back for her lies but I didn't want to stoop to her level. If I had asked Toby, I know he would have told me more about the situation. I was dying to know the details but I held back. All it would have taken were a few well-targeted questions to Toby and a few phone calls and I would have all her supporters turn against her but I wouldn't, I would let karma do its job.

Karma surely did its thing, a few days later when I was scrolling through my phone instead of getting ready to go to Aiden's place for our little hangout, I saw on some blogs that the DNA test results that confirmed that Toby was not Yasmin's baby daddy had been leaked.

I laughed out loud at her predicament. The tables had turned, the same people that had been sympathising with her then were now bashing her. That was the internet for you, she couldn't take it so she soon disabled all her social media accounts.

We wouldn't be hearing from Yasmin for a while, does that mean Toby and I could have a chance?

I pushed the thought to the back of my mind.

Could Toby even want me back especially after the way I treated him and all the hurtful words I said to him. Maybe we were just better apart.

I put my phone down and went in search of what to wear for my little outing. I decided to go for a casual look. I didn't want him to get the wrong idea. I had a jeans-on-jeans look going with light blue skinny jeans, a white shirt and a jean jacket in the same shade as my pants. Even though the look was casual, I took my time getting my hair laid and my makeup just right.

I repeatedly told myself that my dressing up had nothing to do with the fact that Toby was coming to pick Jeremy up. They were spending the day together away from the apartment for the first time since our divorce.

"You look great, what's the occasion?" Toby asked during the handover. I took my time dropping all of Jeremy's bags in the car before answering.

"I'm hanging out with Aiden."

"Aiden again," he grumbled under his breath, but I could hear him loud and clear. He buckled Jeremy in and rose to his feet before he said, "have fun then." He gave me a wide smile that didn't quite reach his eyes.

I waved them off before I headed back into the building and then to Aiden's apartment.

I insisted we do lunch to deter any romantic notions dinner plans could harbour. No tables on the balcony bathed in moonlight and by the glow of candles, check. No drinking wine because it was way too early for that.

"You won't even have a glass?" Aiden asked for the umpteenth time.

"No, not even a glass."

"I know it's still early but just one glass won't do a thing."

"I'll pass, besides Jeremy will be back any moment from now." I was beginning to get annoyed at his insistence.

"I'm glad you agreed to have lunch with me." I hummed in response.

The feeling wasn't mutual. At every turn, he tried to make things romantic. He gave me flowers when I arrived and brought the window blinds down. I barely acknowledged the flowers and raised the window blinds back up, letting the bright sunlight in and drowning out the dim lighting.

We had finished lunch and now we were seated on the couch. I was plotting how I could make my escape without sounding rude when he began to inch closer. He cupped my face and looked into my eyes. I swallowed.

"Ruby," he began but his phone ringing cut him off. I moved away from him when I noticed he was distracted. He stood up from the couch and further away from me as he whispered into the phone, there seemed to be an issue.

"Please wait for me, I need to get something from the lobby real quick," he said when he got off the phone. With that, he was gone. I would have preferred to leave but he didn't quite give me that option. I was stuck waiting for him.

He was gone longer than he had insinuated and I needed to pee so I stood up in search of the toilet. After easing myself, my curiosity got the better of me and I did a little exploration of the apartment.

At the end of a short corridor, I found his room. It was neat and plain. It didn't have much of a personal touch to it, totally void of any clutter. Then at the opposite end, I found another room, with its door slightly ajar as if waiting for me to discover it. It seemed like the original intent of the room was for it to be a storage room because there were no windows but it was presently being used as some sort of surveillance centre.

The only lighting in the room came from several computer screens mounted on the walls. When I stepped into the room, I shivered not because of the air conditioner blowing cold air into the room but because I saw that the screens showed every part of my apartment, including my bedroom. There was one showing the lobby, the parking garage, inside the elevator and the gym where I worked out. He was watching my entire life.

I whipped out my phone from the front pocket of my jacket and began taking pictures, my hands shaking. I stumbled further into the room and something caught my eye on the small desk that was mounted before the screen. It was a receipt for the grand motel. The name seemed familiar.

I thought hard on it and then it clicked, that was the motel I woke up in right after those pictures of me were released. Careful not to touch anything, I checked the date on the receipt and the check-in and check-out time matched the infamous night I couldn't remember a thing about and the morning after. Why would Aiden do such a thing to me?

"What the hell are you doing?" Somehow, Aiden had entered the room without me noticing while I was hunched over his desk. I turned and we were face to face in the small space.

He was seething, probably because he knew he just got caught. I lunged for the door but he caught my arms immediately.

Was this how I was going to die?
