Chapter 104: Chapter 104
TOBY.
She jumped at the sound of glass shattering behind us. Then cautiously approached me, I didn't think that was a good idea. I wasn't a violent man but with the rage I was trying to contain right now, she was better off giving me space. She stretched a hand up to touch my arm then she thought better of it and retracted.
Good! The last thing I wanted was her hands on any part of my anatomy.
"It's not like you're perfect either, we both cheated. Getting Ruby pregnant was not part of the plan," she said. Yes, getting Ruby was not part of the plan but right now if anything feels like a mistake then it's my relationship with her.
"What was missing on your part was honesty, why would you tell me he was mine when you knew he wasn't?"
"It's because I wasn't sure."
"You weren't sure, is that supposed to make this better?"
"We don't need to fight, we can put all this behind us and just move on."
"Yes, it would be better if we move on from this mess but there is no us and there hasn't been any us for a while now…"
"No, you can't do this to me."
"I'm not doing anything to you, all I'm doing is putting a definite stop to a relationship that expired aeons ago."
"I won't let you break up with me." She said, sounding resolute. I chuckled at her statement. There has been barely any relationship but she's talking about letting me break up with her.
"I'm not in the mood for all this drama so just leave," I walk to the door and open it wide for her to go through.
"I'm not leaving until we finish talking about us," she said, watching us from across the room, arms crossed.
"Okay let's talk, can we start with who your baby's father is?"
"That doesn't matter, all that matters is us."
"Well, for some damned reason, it matters to me, I need to know who you stepped out on me with or maybe they are too numerous to mention and that's why you can't tell me who Toby's father is."
"Are you calling me a whore?" She sounded offended as she asked.
"If the shoe fits?" I shrugged.
"I was faithful to your cheating ass, I only stepped out on you, one freaking time."
"Then tell me who you were with, maybe then we can discuss whatever it is you want us to," I baited her.
"It was Aiden," she yelled, falling for my trap. It hit me hard. I wish she was lying but I could tell she wasn't.
"You've been sleeping with my cousin?" I said, my voice cracking at the end. I was even more hurt than I was before.
"It was just once," she said, her voice a plea. "I love you, you know that."
"You should have thought of that when you were seducing my cousin."
"I didn't seduce him, I swear it was the opposite. He's not who you think he is."
"Get out," I yelled.
"You promised we'd talk."
"Talk then," I waited for her to speak. She was sobbing, tears running down her face but I felt no sympathy.
"Things weren't supposed to end like this, we love each other, we're supposed to get married," she said, she had moved closer and was clutching my arm. I gently pried my arm out of her grip but she held on even harder.
"Please don't do this to us," she said. She was halfway to her knees before I grabbed her.
"You are embarrassing yourself, stop this and just leave," I said but she wouldn't listen. She left me no other choice, I dragged her out to the hall where I handed her over to security to show her out. I looked away because I felt embarrassed for her as two men dragged her out.
My head was reeling from all the events that had taken place. I needed peace and I longed to see Jeremy. On the ride over, I had to admit to myself that I also wanted to see Ruby. I ran into Aiden just as I stepped out of the elevator.
We greeted each other casually but I couldn't shake what Yasmin said off, "he's not who you think he is," were her exact words.
I mean why was he always after the same women as me? When we were out, he'd always want to approach the same girl as me but I didn't see it as anything. I'd always let him have the first pick. He was my bro. He's always had his eye on Ruby but Yasmin? He never showed any sign he wanted her.
"What do you want," Ruby said, the moment she opened the door.
"I want to see my son, am I no longer allowed to see him again."
"I didn't think you were interested in him anymore, not when you had another son with the love of your life," she said. She sounded bitter.
"Something just came to light, Toby is not my son," I said. She must have picked up something in my voice because her features softened with sympathy and she got out of the way, letting me in.
Jeremy was on his play mat in the living room and the way he perked up at the sight of me made the gloomy clouds around me disappear. I hunched down, picked him up and twirled him, soliciting loud giggles from him, he was such a delight. Ruby watched us from a distance, a small smile on her face. I gave her a wink and a smile before we continued to play.
"So you and Aiden huh?" She was being cordial with me and I was pushing my luck by asking her such a question. We were having lunch, and both of us fed Jeremy from our plates.
"What happened to us?"
"So there is an us, both of you are dating now."
"Last I checked I was single and allowed to mingle."
"Of course but don't you think it's a little weird to go dating my cousin?" She didn't give me a reply, just went back to eating her food and so I knew the discussion was over. I don't bother adding that this same Aiden was the father of Yasmin's son because I felt that information wasn't needed for her, yet.
On my way back, I thought of all the solved cases that were lingering. The attempts on my life, Ruby's pictures, Jeremy's kidnap, Aiden and Yasmin's entanglement and even Ruby divorcing me out of the blues.
Ruby's feelings for me were genuine, unlike what she wanted me to think. No matter how she tried to suppress it I could still see it even now. I felt like if I got to the bottom of one of these cases then I would get to the bottom of all.
