Chapter 103: Chapter 103
TOBY.
I watched Yasmin's interview in awe, I knew she would pull off something like this but then not to this extent. She was telling every single detail with made-up stories and lies to favour her. After I told her off, I've been brainstorming ways to handle the backlash that would come out of her revealing my son's paternity but I wasn't prepared for this.
The only thing I had come up with was to tender a public apology for stepping out of my marriage but now with all she said, everything would be seen from a different angle in the public eye, I had to wait and see. It could be dangerous if I made any hasty statements.
My phone rang and I looked down to see that it was my father, I had been expecting his call.
"Good morning, Mr Toby Daniels." It wasn't my father on the other side of the line, if him calling Mr was not enough indication then his voice was.
"Who am I speaking with?" I needed to confirm I wasn't speaking to a kidnapper. I chuckled at the thought, it was comical to think state security would fail in protecting the Mayor.
"Your father's assistant. He wants to meet with you at his office in the next hour." I cut the call without any further formalities.
I immediately started to get ready to leave for his office, changing into formal clothes. The last thing I want to do is anger him further. Showing up in a suit and on time should help soften whatever anger he was sure to show.
I showed up with a lot of time to spare and waited patiently for him. I was offered water, tea, coffee, and juice but I declined. I would have taken them up on their offer and asked for a meal as well if only I knew what was ahead of me.
I waited for almost three hours before the assistant came and said, "your father will see you now." By that time I was beyond pissed so when I marched into his office, it was without fear of his wrath. It had all the makings of an explosive situation.
"I warned you to keep your mistress in check," was the first thing he said when I stepped into his office.
"How straight to the point of you, no hello son or how are you. Maybe even sorry for keeping you waiting," I said unbuttoning my blazer and taking a seat. I shouldn't be baiting him but I was angry and I wanted to rile him up too.
It worked, he glared at me but he couldn't credit me with a reply. He then went back to scanning through the papers in front of him. I was lucky he spoke immediately but now I had jinxed It, who knew when he would decide to speak again?
I watched him for a minute then I got bored, "if you're not going to speak then I might as well just leave."
I didn't get a reaction out of him until I stood up to leave, "Don't you even dare step outside of that entrance." His voice was low making his threat sound even more potent. I found myself seating right back. As the president of the Daniels conglomerate, he was intimidating enough but as the Mayor, it was downright scary.
"Your incompetence disgusts me, you couldn't keep your marriage together and you can't even keep this woman under control, yet you come here and run your mouth like you are a man when you're just a damn pussy," he scolded.
"You haven't done any better, can you call what you and mom have a marriage? You might even have a child somewhere, you just hide it better."
"At least I'm smart enough to not give myself a headache over a child that's not even mine," he said, a smug look on his face.
"What do you mean by that?"
"The boy isn't yours," he said, tossing an envelope at me. I opened it to see DNA test results that show I was not his father.
"How did you…?"
"As I said, I'm smarter than you, you can't be so naive to accept paternity just because she told you she's the father. I had one done on you when you were a baby, sometimes even think of having another done because you're too darn useless."
"You're sick," I spat out, feeling sick to my stomach. How could he casually discuss such a matter?
"I had a test done on Jeremy too, that one came back positive."
"Is this even legal? Doing a paternity test behind my back?"
"I'm the grandfather, I should have the right to ensure the purity of my bloodline. You should be thanking me, I just saved you all the trouble of raising a bastard child." My head was reeling at this new information.
Yasmin could not have betrayed me like this, or could she? Instead of relief, I felt heartbroken at the possibility that he wasn't mine. Just when I was beginning to connect with the boy. My head ached, and I had to go see Yasmin.
I stood up abruptly and went for the door, "don't do anything stupid," my father called out after me. In my hurry, I barely registered his words. I sat in my car and repeatedly dialled Yasmin's number but the call wouldn't go through. It was probably deliberate so I sent her a text.
"I need to see you, come by the house," it read.
It was even better this way, at least I could hide my emotions. If we spoke on the phone, I might give something away. This way, she would come in unprepared, maybe even thinking I wanted to settle things.
Security alerted me the moment she arrived on the property. I gave instructions for her to be led straight to the study.
Sitting behind the huge desk gave our meeting the formality it needed.
"Oooh, your office, someone in the mood for some role play," she said the moment she walked in, strutting over to where I sat behind the desk. It reminded me of when we solved all our problems with sex.
Who was I kidding? Sex is all we ever had and even that wasn't exclusive.
"Who is Toby's father?" I rose to my feet and put some distance between us.
"Who else if not you, silly." She giggled, sliding up to me.
"I'm not joking, I want the truth. Who is his father?"
"You."
"Then explain this," I threw the envelope at her.
"Okay, fine, he is not yours," she said dismissively after reading the test results.
"Then whose child is he?"
"It doesn't matter, I didn't care about his father and it was just a one-time thing. A mistake."
"How could you? You betrayed me!" In my anger, I threw a mug across the room, we both watched as it hit the wall and came crashing down.
