Chapter 40: Chapter 40
Ava's attempts to deflect Bella's teasing were futile, and she couldn't help but smile at her friend's persistence. " Okay, okay, let's drop it, " she said, trying to steer the conversation away from her boss. " How was your weekend? "
Bella ignored her question and instead, stared at Ava suspiciously as she grinned " Mhhm, I can smell something brewing "
Ava rolled her eyes " It's coffee, duh "
" You know that's not what I meant " Bella retorted playfully and they laughed.
Their conversation continued, veering away from the subject of Bryan but leaving Ava with a lingering warmth mixed with a tinge of embarrassment at the unexpected teasing from Bella. Bella's playful banter had momentarily lightened Ava's mood, yet the thoughts about maintaining a professional demeanor lingered at the back of her mind.
Ava busied herself with work, maintaining her usual efficiency and dedication. Yet, in fleeting moments between meetings and tasks, her thoughts involuntarily strayed back to Bryan, causing a slight flutter in her chest.
As the workday progressed, Bella popped back into Ava's office, an animated expression on her face. " Hey, Ava! I forgot a document. Mind if I grab it real quick? " she asked, her eyes scanning the room.
" Sure, it's right here, " Ava replied, retrieving the document from her desk and handing it to Bella. They both walked out of the office together, engaged in a lively conversation about upcoming projects.
Amid their conversation, Bryan emerged from a nearby corridor, accompanied by his secretary. As he passed by Ava, he caught her eye and subtly winked, a gesture that sent a sudden rush of warmth through her, causing her cheeks to flush a delicate shade of pink.
Bella, always observant, caught the exchange and her eyes widened in surprise. " Wait a second! Did I just see him wink at you? " she exclaimed in a hushed tone, halting in her tracks.
Ava's heart skipped a beat at the unexpected attention drawn to the brief interaction. " Um, I... I think so, " she stammered, trying to downplay the moment.
Bella, sensing Ava's discomfort, grabbed her arm gently, drawing her away from the main corridor to a more secluded spot. " Spill it, Ava, " Bella insisted, her voice lowered to a whisper. " What was that? There's definitely something going on. "
Ava felt a mix of emotions—embarrassment, excitement, and a tinge of nervousness. " I don't know, Bella, " she admitted, her voice barely audible. " Maybe it was just a friendly gesture. "
Bella raised an eyebrow, unconvinced. " Ava, that wasn't just 'friendly', " she teased, nudging her friend. " Come on, something's cooking between you two. "
She added " Have you forgotten who Bryan is?? He doesn't do things like that with just any girl! "
Ava tried to deflect Bella's playful prodding, feeling a flutter of uncertainty within her. " Let's not make a big deal out of it, okay? " she urged, attempting to steer the conversation away from the unexpected moment with Bryan.
Despite Ava's efforts to move on, the tingling sensation from Bryan's wink lingered, leaving her flustered and intrigued, unsure of what the gesture truly meant. Bella, always the supportive friend, stood by her side, offering comfort and a hint of playful curiosity that Ava couldn't shake off.
As the workday drew to a close, Ava tidied up her desk, her mind grappling with a mix of anticipation and disappointment. A subtle part of her hoped for a repeat of the previous evening, secretly wishing that Bryan might show up unexpectedly. Yet, as the minutes ticked by and no sign of him appeared, a sense of disappointment crept in.
With a sigh, she gathered her belongings and bid her colleagues farewell before making her way out of the office building. The city streets were alive with the usual hustle and bustle, but Ava's thoughts lingered elsewhere, preoccupied with the image of Bryan and the inexplicable tingling sensation his wink had stirred within her.
The evening sky painted hues of purple and orange as Ava waited at the bus stop, lost in contemplation. The occasional passerby and the honking of cars became distant background noise as her mind replayed the moments with Bryan. She couldn't help but wonder about the meaning behind his gesture, grappling with the uncertainty of its significance.
Boarding the bus, Ava found herself gazing out of the window, the passing scenery a mere blur as thoughts of Bryan lingered. She couldn't deny the flutter in her stomach at the memory of his wink, a moment that had ignited a spark of intrigue within her.
Despite her best efforts to push aside those thoughts and maintain a professional distance, Bryan's presence seemed to linger, entwined with her journey home. The bus rumbled along its route, navigating through the city streets as Ava's mind wavered between the day's events and the mysterious charm of her boss.
As the bus made its stops and the passengers disembarked, Ava's apartment building finally came into view. Disembarking with a sigh, she walked the familiar path towards her home, the thoughts of Bryan still swirling in her mind.
Though disappointed that he hadn't shown up as she secretly hoped, the evening had left Ava with a mix of emotions—a subtle longing mingled with a tinge of uncertainty. She unlocked the door to her apartment, stepping inside with a sigh, ready to leave the day's enigmatic encounters behind as she prepared for a quiet evening in solitude.
After entering her apartment, Ava dropped her bag by the door and made her way to the kitchen, feeling a wave of hunger wash over her. She prepared a simple yet fulfilling meal, the aroma of the food filling her cozy space. With a satisfied sigh, she savored every bite, feeling the comfort of the warm meal easing away the day's tensions.
The clock on the wall chimed past 8 PM, and Ava realized the evening had slipped away faster than she anticipated.
